Ghosts 'n Goblins now punishing iPhone players

We're going to assume that the difficulty of the series is tuned for iPhone play: Ghosts 'n Goblins games tend to be nightmarish in difficulty even with real d-pads and buttons, and porting that experience directly to the iPhone could only lead to tears. The lifebar from the PSP game will help, but even so we expect Arthur to spend most of the game in his boxers, as usual.
One aspect that is definitely tuned to the iPhone: paid DLC. For 99 cents a pop, you can power up Arthur or Lancelot, get unlimited lives or unlimited access to magic, or even reduce the strength of enemies and eliminate magicians from the game.
If you're feeling brave enough to take on the armies of Satan with just a touchscreen, Capcom is offering the game for $2.99 -- a discount of $2 -- until November 23.

does this game really look as ugly as the screenshots make it?
NaeemTHM @ Nov 11th 2009 12:00PM
It does, but it's not terrible looking for a cellphone game.
Anyway, IGN gave it a pretty good review. I'd probably check it out if there was a trial version :-/
No...no I wouldn't. Man I totally gate digital touch pads! THEY SUCK!
NaeemTHM @ Nov 11th 2009 12:00PM
gate=hate
Monkey Fetish @ Nov 11th 2009 12:21PM
Its not as ugly as how its going to play.
Seriously, Ghosts 'n Goblins is a challenging 2D platform game, and the iPhone has the absolutely HORRID virtual-touch d-pad & buttons.
iPhone developers should quit on those horrible controls. They plain don't work.
Martin @ Nov 11th 2009 12:34PM
Virtual controls DO work. Virtual d-pads don't.
D dogg @ Nov 11th 2009 1:45PM
Actually the game looks quite good.
I don't think you people who don't own these devices understand that screenshots are usually like taking a 320 x 240 wmv and stretching it full size on your TV... it looks no where near as good.

@ D dogg
I've own every iteration of the Phone released, the problem as stated in the article isn't really about the graphics. Its about the horrible controls. G n' G is one of the hardest platformers ever released, the iPhone touch-screen d-pad is one of the WORST controls ever released. Its a bad combination.

.99 cent to give unlimited lives? Bullshit.
In the old Ghosts 'n Goblins games you had to beat the game with the lives you had, with two hits, and had to beat it twice in a row to actually beat it.
Josh @ Nov 11th 2009 12:22PM
Sounds fun.
Orchard Pear @ Nov 11th 2009 12:16PM
I'll stick with Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins on the PSP.
Real controls, and it doesn't look like a DOS game from the 80's.

first R-Type, and now this.
i predict a lot of people attempting to return their broken iPhones to the apple store.
Comtar @ Nov 11th 2009 12:51PM
Looking at the screenshots, I now wished it was sprite based instead. It doesn't look very good.
DBuck_Eye @ Nov 11th 2009 1:24PM
What kind of pussy would pay a dollar to beat this game? Any real gamer stupid enough to attempt such a feat (with it being on the iphone and all) would know they need to play, play, and play some more to get it done. Not crack and send the dev money just to say they technically reached the end.

Life bars? In Ghost 'n Goblins?
That's the video game equivalent to "Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!"
