Everyone rush! Multiplayer returns to PS3 Modern Warfare 2 [update]
Just as Veteran's Day comes to a close, it appears Infinity Ward has finally been able to get the online infrastructure stable for the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2. It appears the third party-powered servers simply couldn't handle the overwhelming demand following the game's launch. Makes sense: it did sell close to a zillion copies. "We expect smooth skies ahead," IW's Robert Bowling stated in a recent tweet. That is, unless all of you rush to your PS3s again now that multiplayer is working yet again. Remember, though: this is simply a server-side fix that allows you to play multiplayer. The party system still won't work until a patch, planned for release on Friday.
Like many Joystiq commenters have pointed out, we're hoping this closure means the end of Modern Warfare 2 stories for a while. Hopefully we can keep this tag closed for at least a few days, before people start murmuring about the inevitable DLC to come.
Update: The PS3 patch for party invites has also gone live. More info can be found here.

Gamers are like vampires.....
Some even suck .....

Joe (PSN & XBL: leslij55) @ Nov 12th 2009 7:28AM
12am? Pfft, me and a friend were playing online till 5am on launch night.
Luke @ Nov 12th 2009 9:09AM
WTF is 12 in the morning? 12:00 is either midnight or noon. Morning is around 6am, which is in between the two...
Xero @ Nov 12th 2009 10:29AM
@chillski- It's Bobby Kotick... of course he doesn't know shit about gamers.
Ferdasyn @ Nov 13th 2009 11:13AM
Wow, Joe,
Watch out everyone, Badass alert.
bumblo @ Nov 12th 2009 12:07AM
Excellent, time to get in on the REAL fun, i.e the multiplayer of course. Anyone else think the single player's story was borderline retarded?(Gameplay was hella fun, I actually had quite a few OMG! moments)
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 12th 2009 12:09AM
Haven't beaten it yet, but it definitely jumps the shark compared to the first game (so far). It's dramatic, but really over-the-top.
bumblo @ Nov 12th 2009 12:13AM
It's sort of like a Tom Clancy novel, except the conspiracies don't really make any sense here.. I'm getting tired of seeing Russian baddies in every war game I play too. It's either Nazis.. or Russians. Seriously can't we just leave the cold war days behind?
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 12:16AM
Russians make good bad guys, what can I say.
myabsolution @ Nov 12th 2009 12:27AM
Infinity ward, god bless them, can make hella good games.However... their story telling ability is sub-par. This game is no exception. Lots of plot holes, twists, over the top situations and head scratching moments. I have beaten the game on veteran already and I didnt understand a lot of things that happened in this game.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 12:29AM
Well...I'd like to know how Prisoner 627 came about...
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] ATDF's Financier and Batman @ Nov 12th 2009 12:56AM
it was like a tom clancy novel, if tom clancy had outsourced it to a 9th grader in a creative writing class. There were SO many plotholes, damn i really wanna discuss it in depth but i hammered through it on regular (did it seem harder than usual to anyone else? maybe it was that god awful blood spray that makes it impossible to see) but i know lots of people would just go to multiplayer and do SP later. But seriously, damn retarded in lots of places. Prisoner 627, Makarov, the general, the "truth", the submarine, fuck! it made no sense!
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 12:58AM
When can we lift the Spoiler Embargo?
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 1:04AM
I'm hoping the 3rd installment fixes it.
myabsolution @ Nov 12th 2009 1:05AM
you said it Dark Wayne... all those examples are things that made no sense. I even asked some friends to explain them and they didn't get it either, or had little understanding of those plot events.
bumblo @ Nov 12th 2009 1:14AM
**Possible spoilers**
Yeah the submarine part made no sense to me at all.. One moment he's a baddie trying to launch a freaking nuke which basically blows up the ISS, disables countless American aircraft, vehicles and killing god knows how many innocent people in the process.. Next moment, its all cool and you're talking to him on the radio like he's your best chum and nothing ever happened..
BTW I had to read the story on Wikipedia to gain a better understanding of what the hell was really going on..
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] ATDF's Financier and Batman @ Nov 12th 2009 1:25AM
okay, fuck it, SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
I just wikipedia'd it too and NOWHERE AT ALL in the game did it say that shepard hired makarov, ever. He shot Roach and Ghost, and says "that's one loose end" that's it, there was nothing else at all to connect him and makarov. Fuck, in the next missions price even talks to makarov and and gets him to tell him where shepard is by remidning him he hates him! What the fuck?!
bumblo @ Nov 12th 2009 1:35AM
ZOMG SPOILERS
You're right the game never really tells you that Makarov was Shepherd's hired gun, but that's the only thing that makes sense. Like it said in the Wikipedia article, Shepherd did it so that America could take over Russia and become more awesome and.. oh god i feel stupid typing this already, seriously its like my 7 year old brother came up with this plot
Samael @ Nov 12th 2009 2:18AM
I just got started and got through that airport scene. I need some explanation as to what is going on and how on earth: !!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did they get into the US? and wtf is going on? Wish they fleshed the story out more. I think they spent a little too much time on the MP side of things. Now if you want to get to the MP, that is done brilliantly and I am loving everything about that.
HSOL @ Nov 12th 2009 2:30AM
Hopefully IW will hire a Hollywood writer for MW3. If not, then at least take a couple of classes on international affairs and screenwriting 101. Getting Hans Zimmer was the step in the right direction in making a more cinematic game.(Although the score seemed like it was recycled from the Dark Knight)
kentuckyfried @ Nov 12th 2009 4:09AM
It was convoluted and borderline retarded.
2 Minutes to Midnight (PSN Muir666) @ Nov 12th 2009 5:04AM
*SPOILERS*
As far as i'm aware the airport was in Russia. Hence the Russians getting so pissed off. If your discussing the mission after (Burger Town??) Then the ADS which you recover playing as Roach was cracked by the Russians and they disabled all the satellites. So the Americans had no idea they were coming until the close range scanners picked them up. It does tell you a little bit about it in the cutscenes if you watch them all.
XBL: xGeneral DEATHx PSN: Deeth82 [Planeteer | Power of General Hostility and Angst] @ Nov 12th 2009 8:24AM
**SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER**
Price launches the nuke over DC so that it will disable all of the Russians' electronic systems. Sure, it disabled ours too, and likely got a lot of our people killed, but now the Russians are fighting blind on our home turf, so the US would have home field advantage. That part made sense to me...sacrifice few to save many. All the same, I'm now on the mission where you're with Ghost while Price and Soap work a separate location. And yes, Dark Wayne, the SP seems a bit more difficult this time around...on CoD4 I could run through and knife baddies carefully on Normal...now it's like getting my nuts hammered with a meat tenderizer just to move from one area to another. All the same, I like it. I must be a dirty masochist.
XBL: xGeneral DEATHx PSN: Deeth82 [Planeteer | Power of General Hostility and Angst] @ Nov 12th 2009 8:25AM
Just to clarify on my comment above, a nuclear detonation generates EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) which disables all electronics within the immediate area which aren't shielded against EMP.
Joshua @ Nov 12th 2009 9:32AM
Also realize that they didn't add campaign co op because they didn't want to mess up the story.
Really?
psn kbee-haze @ Nov 12th 2009 12:07AM
FINALLY oh wait i dont have this game :(
CzAr @ Nov 12th 2009 12:41AM
Who would...
Anyone who does, is better off trading their game in now towards BC2.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 12:45AM
That's too bad. You're missing out over a few issues with the developer and publisher.
Buy both and be happy.
CzAr @ Nov 12th 2009 12:48AM
I wasn't happy with COD4, why would I be with MW2?
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 12:51AM
That's fine, but don't ask "Who would?"
A lot of people, that's who.
I'm aware MW2 isn't everyones cup of tea, but don't make statements for everyone else.
That Guy @ Nov 12th 2009 12:54AM
I wouldn't. Not playing $60 for single player, thats for sure.
I'll buy it when they put the multi back in.
Bobby Kotick - Co-Founder of the ATDF @ Nov 12th 2009 1:08AM
Then just rent the damn thing.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 1:12AM
You heard it here, folks!
Bobby tells off the trolls!
That Guy @ Nov 12th 2009 1:22AM
The only rentals they do on PC are games with SecuROM.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 1:29AM
That's why they invented the console, genius.
That Guy @ Nov 12th 2009 2:28AM
Torrents are more my thing.
Wrathbringer @ Nov 12th 2009 12:08AM
MAN these guys are slow, online has been back for at least two hours!
Bagels (@AlsoBagels) @ Nov 12th 2009 12:16AM
I've had no problems at all since I got the game Tuesday.
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 12th 2009 12:23AM
Yeah, I've been waiting ALL DAY for online to come back, and they turn it on during the few hours I couldn't be next to my PS3. Guess that's how timing works.
Wrathbringer @ Nov 12th 2009 12:25AM
Shitty deal, I had that issue while I was killing time playing the single player. Every few minutes I'd be thinking that the servers were back on and that I should quit RIGHT NOW and check...
Orchard Pear @ Nov 12th 2009 12:46AM
Wait..
A Joystiq writer playing a multiplatform game on the PS3?
....
EI8HT @ Nov 12th 2009 1:21AM
@Andrew
Can we play MW2 network? or is it limited to server only?
solarshadows074 @ Nov 12th 2009 12:10AM
i have no idea wtf is going on but my online multiplayer is working just fine.. been playing for a couple of hours now.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 12th 2009 12:10AM
Good for the PS3 players. They've been missing out.
CheeziePotato (ATDF's Super Saiyan) @ Nov 12th 2009 12:13AM
The best part about the PS3 version was that there weren't stupid kids and teens screaming and shit.
