Fox & Friends gets 'fair and balanced' with Modern Warfare 2 discussion
Did you know that there's a murderer in your house ... right now? It's sitting there on your coffee table, in your Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PC. It's name is Modern Warfare 2, and it lets your eight-year-old child become a terrorist and kill people. Our pals at Fox & Friends got together for a "fair and balanced" discussion about the game's controversial airport scene, with the show's host Steve Doocy inviting Common Sense Media's Jim Steyer and /gamer's Jon Christensen into the fray.
Unsurprisingly, Steyer makes the oft-cited connection between violent games and real-life violence. And when Doocy gives Christensen the final word, he cobbles together an anecdote about his friend the retail manager not selling copies of Modern Warfare 2 to underage consumers, which is met with, "You bring a game into a house, nothing to stop an eight-year-old kid from becoming a terrorist and shooting people" from Doocy. So far, we haven't received any reports of the game sneaking its way into people's homes or making parents blind and unaware of their children's actions, but we'll keep our ears to the ground.

Fox news is the best comedy channel eVAR!
pax copia @ Nov 12th 2009 5:14PM
Fox News is yellow journalism (journalism that exploits, distorts, or exaggerates the news to create sensations and attract readers) and it is not in my opinion funny.
brian @ Nov 12th 2009 5:14PM
ok, i got voted down up there.
but seriously, what could compel an intelligent person to watch fox news?
LaughingTarget @ Nov 12th 2009 5:15PM
What journalism these days isn't? Every channel has their opinions, you just think it's good journalism if it happens to match yours.
Michael @ Nov 12th 2009 5:28PM
If no one watched Fox as it is, then they'd have to change their "journalism". So who's fault is it really?
Preston @ Nov 12th 2009 5:28PM
@pax: "Yellow" journalism? Are you trying to imply that Fox are COMMUNISTS and not red blooded Americans? That is SLANDER, good sir!
Mo @ Nov 12th 2009 5:36PM
@Laughing Target: Lately, it seems they are all pushing the same agenda, just with different enough approaches to stop you from seeing what they did there....
formersegaguy @ Nov 12th 2009 5:41PM
Firstly: Fox News is in most cases, including this one, not journalism at all. It's punditry. This is not a journalistic story, it's a lop-sided debate with a biased mediator.
But much more importantly, not all bias is equal. There is a problem with people picking and choosing only the slant and story they want to hear, but this infantile idea that everybody is equally biased, everyone takes equal pains to cover/exploit that bias, and all reporting or information is of equal value tainted only by whether you the viewer agree or disagree is horse apples.
Horse apples, I tells ya.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Nov 12th 2009 6:06PM
Wow, nice job Jon Christensen. You didn't say a goddamn thing to help the situation. Next time FOX will hopefully get someone intelligent enough to actually TALK about the game. But I guess that wouldn't really fit in with their fair and balanced mantra.
NoughtSoClever @ Nov 12th 2009 6:06PM
Actually Preston, when it is written, it is Libel. But that is besides the point. The point is that Fox News is filled to the brim with douche bags.
RogueJedi86 @ Nov 12th 2009 6:13PM
To paraphase G4's remark last week: "Fox News is like The Onion, except The Onion's fake news is actually funny".
pswii60 elite @ Nov 12th 2009 6:23PM
I love how these "news outlets" always have to have these stories and always try to paint the only person on the panel who has actually played the game and has first hand knowledge of what he is talking about, as the ignorant one.
Fox is a joke, and no, its not funny!
Mike @ Nov 12th 2009 6:50PM
If you have to have your tagline be "Fair and Balanced", that's pretty strong evidence that you have bias issues.
RenegadeRSO @ Nov 12th 2009 6:50PM
@ Preston. No, he did not call them commies. He said yellow journalism, not RED journalism. why do you think CNN is red? That's right Communist News Network. Fox is just plain ol' yellow.
Wiizer ($299) Having BC On Your Launch Console? (Priceless) @ Nov 12th 2009 7:45PM
Wow, Fox News hates our soldiers. They can't even play MW2, because it's a killing machine?
What kind of message are they saying about our soldiers?
Malkmus @ Nov 12th 2009 7:46PM
By their logic we probably shouldn't even have an army - you know
that place our government sends our nation's kids to become trained
killers.
tyetheczar @ Nov 12th 2009 8:19PM
We need to make anyone and everyone who supports/works with Fox "News(Murdoch included) to be shootable characters. THAT will scare them shitless.
atx1980 @ Nov 12th 2009 8:20PM
Apparently the magical age is 8 years old.
WARNING!!!!
Keep all 8 year olds away from this game they WILL become at terrorist!
WARNING!!!!
Brandon @ Nov 12th 2009 8:21PM
OH NOES! I hope they are wrong because if they are right then there will be at least 15 million terrorists in the world!!!
Rahzel @ Nov 12th 2009 8:30PM
I'm so sick of media bashing gamers and the gaming community for the so-called violence influence. Games are growing up as are the people playing them...isn't the average gamer age somewhere in their mid/late 20s now?
There comparable to R-rated movies, don't let your fucking 8 year olds watch Apocolypse Now or Pulp Fiction or whatever, don't let them play MW2 or GTA, etc.... simple.

Who's the Slash Dot Moron? Way to represent gamers there chief.
saltdeezy @ Nov 13th 2009 1:42PM
Apparently they never heard of Counter Strike...
VaultBoy @ Nov 13th 2009 2:56PM
The outcry over FOX's slanted reporting is actually surprising. They ALWAYS DO THIS. People who dont play games telling gamers what they should be playing? Its ridiculous. Its like telling us: "You know what a good game was? PONG! That was back when games were good and safe..." BLAH BLAH BLAH! If there is a gamers' advocacy group we can join, sign me up because I am tired of this. Gamers have been marginalized for far too long when we are the ones paying the taxes and buying the games that hence pay more of the taxes so blowhard politicians can condemn something they know nothing about.
FOX: PLAY THE FUCKING GAME!
If you are offended by that level it is because you are SUPPOSED to be. It doesn't glorify terroritsts! If anything, it shows you the horrible things they do from a first-person perspective and motivates you to pursue and kill them.
Okay I'm done screaming at the wall...
Platinum_Skeet @ Nov 13th 2009 4:18PM
Damn I haven't seen this much blue comments in a while...
INTERNET SUPERHERO @ Nov 13th 2009 4:25PM
I wish there was someone else that could've been there. There was plenty of positives to. I think no movie can convey the beginning of the game when you head to the Army basic training. Seeing players playing basketball and watching them repair vehicles. I felt a human feeling no movie media ever brought to me in that moment.
Modern Warfare 2 GOTY
VaultBoy @ Nov 13th 2009 10:01PM
This report tells me one thing. It was a slow news day. Whenever there is a slow news day they go for their checklist of go-to topics. Every media outlet does it. Outcry = ratings.
J. sykes @ Nov 12th 2009 5:04PM
Seriously, someone needs to stop Fox News and these other outlets of fearmongering and misinformation.
We need to ban together and rail back against these guys.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 12th 2009 5:08PM
what you fail to realize is that they have MILLIONS of Americans that watch simply because they don't like muslims, black people, people with less money than them, people with MORE money than them, or people that can think for themselves.....which is why Glen Prick, & HO'Reilly can talk all that shit even if shit they said the previous 8 years was the REVERSE of what they are saying now
brian @ Nov 12th 2009 5:09PM
... i just... fear for this country!
and i worry about what will happen to it... ='(
Duke @ Nov 12th 2009 5:10PM
Oh how original, the everyone who watches FOX is a racist argument. wow.
brian @ Nov 12th 2009 5:10PM
no, not racist.
just an idiot
Shagittarius @ Nov 12th 2009 5:11PM
Fox news controlled by Ruppert Murdock
All the other stations controlled by the Central Banking Interests who in turn control the federal government.
There is not a single news channel I would trust to tell me how to think. More people need to think for themselves.
Duke @ Nov 12th 2009 5:13PM
Oh, to clarify - I think this kind of game fear mongering, and a lot of the bs fear mongering of the station, is total bullshit and messed up - but I think its equally messed up bullshit for the attack that Chris made. That would be as sensible as me saying all who watch MSNBS are terrorists or some bullshit. You need to stop throwing that accusation at everyone.
J. sykes @ Nov 12th 2009 5:13PM
replying to my own comment, righteous..
I realize people are stupid. But i also realize people tend to listen to huge groups of other people.
But I suppose this is what we've allowed now. Maybe I should pull a V for Vendetta.
charlie b. @ Nov 12th 2009 5:14PM
FOX define yellow journalism.
Shagittarius @ Nov 12th 2009 5:15PM
You'll never hear the truth about anything that matters from the media.
Duke @ Nov 12th 2009 5:16PM
Correction - MSNBC not MSNBS.
Hmmmm subliminal message there eh? Not on purpose.
LaughingTarget @ Nov 12th 2009 5:18PM
Let's see, painting the entire channel as fear mongering racists because of four hours of opinion programming. Turn it on around noon and tell me it isn't good reporting. FOX does have the best reporting crew in the media today, if you can look a little further than the simplistic opinion programming during prime time that every other news organization has.
AsherR [Planeteer | Power of The Hoff] @ Nov 12th 2009 5:26PM
@Shagittarius: When the world becomes more like the world in Deus Ex (which it will, when the Illuminati wills it), I want you on my side.

Mo @ Nov 12th 2009 5:35PM
@Brian LOL exactly!
DamonTheMoney @ Nov 12th 2009 5:35PM
"FOX does have the best reporting crew in the media today".
Hmm ... well I can't speak for America, but in the UK our news reporters and programming is actually impartial and intelligent. Fox News is neither of those.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 12th 2009 5:35PM
Duke I didn't say EVERYONE that watches Fox News is Racist....that would be a dumb ass thing to say considering I watch it for comedy.....
Duke @ Nov 12th 2009 5:50PM
Touché Chris!
Mo @ Nov 12th 2009 5:50PM
Chris didnt say EVERYONE he said MILLIONS and I have to cosign his statement.
But I see what you were trying to do there... Classic Fox Stylee ;-)
Duke @ Nov 12th 2009 5:55PM
MO, that was a desperate attempt to coat-tail. How many is irrelevant, as its a slanderous and baseless accusation to make about the general populace of those mentioned. Point still holds true - you shouldn't make such wild accusations against people unless they individually have acted to demonstrate it.
Obie @ Nov 12th 2009 5:55PM
Someone should "infiltrate" them.
"Remember, no Russian"
Overgauss @ Nov 12th 2009 6:21PM
@Duke
Your fanboy/reactionary gene has surpassed your reading comprehension gene because Chris wasn't talking necessarily about the general population that watches Fox.
There's a lot of people that watch Fox. Some of them for the reasons Chris listed. No need to pull out your anti-race card card when none was brandished to begin with. Sensitive much?
Duke @ Nov 12th 2009 6:34PM
So because I don't think people should blindly call people racist I'm being attacked as a fanboy type? I think you are the one overreacting. Thanks for the baseless personal attack.
Cody @ Nov 12th 2009 6:43PM
Duke, you watch Fox News in a manner other than to mock it. We get it.
