With his brother dying in the war and his father abusing the whole family, you'd think that Niko Bellic had lost enough, but now Activision has to come along and take away one of the few things he had left: His day-one sales record. Activision announced today that Modern Warfare 2 sold an estimated 4.7 million units in its first 24 hours in North America and the UK alone, which far exceeds the previous record of 3.6 million held by Grand Theft Auto IV.
In other news, we're going to go ahead and bring you the world exclusive news that Modern Warfare 3 - 7 will be released in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 respectively. That pattern will likely continue into infinity ... but what will we cover in 2020 if we tell you that now?

Insert "over 9000" joke here.
Although the sales were probably under 9000 :P

Same here. It would also be all about Uncharted 2 if Best Buy would ever mail me the damn game. It's been about two weeks now since it was apparently shipped out, and even the tracking page shows an error message for it.
Oh well, 5 days from now I'll be too happy to care anymore.

AC2 is looking to be the high point for me. I've got a friend at Ubi working on the title who feels the game really pulled together in the last few months, to the point where (win, lose or draw) he's entirely satisfied to be going up against L4D2 and MW2's release window.
While I haven't been too impressed with MW2 thus far (finished the campaign, put a couple hours in on MP, still need to check out spec-ops mode), I'm still thinking sales figures of this magnitude are a good thing for gamers and gaming in general. Certainly makes the whole thing a little more mainstream if just as gratuitously violent as ever, heh.

What in the heck would you want in MW 2 to make it "impressive?" Guns that shoot rainbows that kill unicorns?

I'm looking forward to Left4Dead 2, but Assassin's Creed 2 not so much. The first one was a disappointed and they have to prove to me it's not the same thing over and over again.
As for "new" Super Mario.. I got it on my DS.. so why would I want to play a Non-HD version of it on my HD television.. sorry, coop and a silly flying cap don't do it for me... maybe if the raccoon tail was in it I would feel a little less I dunno, let down by the gimmick that's supposed to be new but isn't.

Good for IW (and ATVI, I guess). Regardless of how you may feel for the game (my pants don't exactly tighten when it's mentioned), a lot of people enjoy it, and it reflects in its sales and fanbase. It has an accessible and fun multiplayer, and a thrilling (if not "on rails") campaign.

"I just don't see what the fuss is about because it's nothing different or revolutionary."
And why does a game need to be revolutionary or different in order to be good? I mean I'm all for innovation (when it makes sense) but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the, "if it ain't broke don't fix it, instead improve on it" approach to gaming. And that's what a sequel is. People are making a fuss over it because it's an extremely good game that's a sequel to an extremely good game. Not that hard to understand.

That's pretty stunning, or maybe not considering just about everyone probably expected this.
The haters can fuck off, it's a really great game even with the ridiculous story. It's actually got me playing online again too, and even though I get pissed when there's a billion helicopters/harriers/AC130s in the air at once there's nothing more satisfying than actually getting one yourself and raining death on everyone.
I dunno if it's goty, but it's easily in the top 3 for me.

Yup, I had fun with Uncharted 2 but not as much as I did with Borderlands and MW2. I actually had more run with Ratchet and Batman too, so really U2 is #5 for me.

I wasn't really enjoying demon's souls. Sure, I breezed through 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, and 3-1 but I wasn't having fun so I traded it in with a bunch of other games and got 50% extra credit for each of them at gamestop. Ended up preordering mass effect 2 with that money so it worked out well.

I think I'm the only ass hole in the world who didn't like Borderlands. I mean, I GET it. It's not bad. I just don't get into loot for loot's sake - especially when it's only mad guns. It kind of felt like the game didn't do anything else that great, except for the loot. There's only so many times I can unload an entire clip into a dude's face before it gets old. Those baddies soak up bullets worst than in Gears, and that's saying something!
I guess I like my shooters more shootery and my RPG's more RPG..y. It had a great art style and a bold idea, that just kind of seemed 'meh' in execution, to me.
But what do I know, I'm just a big Jerk Face.

That's exactly why I got voted down, because I didn't say Uncharted was the best game ever. It's not even the best game of this year, so it obviously can't be the best game ever.
It was really good though. You sony fanboys need to calm down.

goty...
uncharted 2. sorry tmac it was the best game of the year. best SP and MP, it brought platforming into gears of war. Everything about that game is polished.
Bat-man, it was just awesome and executed perfectly. plus the fighting system was new.
I'm still playing borderlands and loving it but it's not the best of the year, nothing new. and I haven't played MW2 yet but I've seen it at a friends house and it looks good but again nothing new.
I assume Halo 3: ODST, MW2, and scribblenauts will get the awards though.

@Space
But couldn't you say the exact same thing about Uncharted 2? It's definitely a good game but it really doesn't bring anything new to the genre. It does what a sequel normally does: It provides more of the same, and builds upon what made the first game so good in the first place.

I haven't beaten the MW2 story yet (it's pretty retarded, fun ... but still dumb) but I don't think it lives up to the hype as a package deal. I think the multiplayer is unbalanced and even feels broken at times. I guess it's one of those things where you should know what your getting and what to expect based off the first one.
I just don't see what the fuss is about because it's nothing different or revolutionary. The graphics engine is showing it's age, the story is assinine, the multiplayer is terrible and the game itself just falls short of the lofty expectations I had for it based off the first game. I've never been a fan of COD multiplayer as it's to run and gun for my tastes so it's hard to penalize it for being what it is. People know what to expect from it and just because I think it's shit doesn't mean it's not good. It's simply not my cup of tea.
In my opinion the most redeeming quality about the game is Spec Ops. The story itself has nothing on the first Modern Warfare ... it's not anywhere near as epic, believable and dramatic. It's like a bad action movie this time around.
I'd say based on the reviews it's probably a little overrated. I can forsee the GTA IV syndrome rearing it's ugly head when the honeymoon phase wears off. I'm going to beat it and then trade it in for Assassins Creed 2. No reason to keep it if I don't like it and won't play it. I guess to me it's just way overrated without any justification as to why it's a great game. It's basically the first modern warfare all over again with a shittier campaign mode, the brilliant spec ops mode added in and the same old run and gun multiplayer.
My games of the year so far ... Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Need For Speed Shift, Half Minute Hero, Burn Zombie Burn, Katamari Forever, Devil Summoner 2 & Knights In The Nightmare.

Well numbers are in for the UK and its sold 1.23 million here, it wouldnt surprise me if worldwide they have sold nearly 7 million

The 7 million figure was an analysts prediction based on UK sales.
The problem is that many of the big chains in the uk were selling this for £25 ..( about $40 ) to get people in the door thinking they would buy other stuff while they were there (same hing happened with fifa).
this most likley skewed the prediction.
