October NPD: Uncharted 2 takes top spot while hardware sales slow down

After the last two months of price drop-fueled sales surges, it's almost comforting to see all these red arrows. Hardware sales are down 17% from last month and down 10% from the year prior, with only the Wii maintaining any upward momentum as we head into the two busiest shopping months of the year. The PS3 lost the highest percentage, but that's hardly surprising following last month's meteoric 134% spike in sales.

On the software side of things, the exceptionally well-received PlayStation 3-exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves took top honors, selling 537K units in just the second half of October. Of course, Sony told us earlier today that the title has broken the coveted million mark (worldwide?) with November sales factored in. The multiplatform Borderlands makes a similarly impressive showing, taking third on Xbox 360 with 418K units sold; however, when you factor in the 113K units sold of the not-top-ten PS3 version (data provided graciously by NPD), you find an impressive 531K in cumulative sales, just missing the top spot.

NBA 2K10 had a strong showing with 524K in cumulative sales, "outselling last year's NBA 2K9 by 60% in its launch month" reports the NPD, while last month's champ, Halo 3: ODST, dropped to sixth with 271K in sales. With just four days on shelves in October, Forza Motorsport 3 made a strong showing at #8 with 175K. Slightly less strong was Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days' ninth-place showing despite a full month on the shelf. And in last place is the worldwide phenomenon known as FIFA 10 (or, in North America, FIFA Soccer 10). While FIFA 10 may be the "fastest selling sports game ever" in Europe, selling 1.7m in its first week, over here we bought up just 156K copies in a little over a week.

Considering all the hype and advertising it got, I was expecting 900k-1mil at least. This was a very slow month software wise when #1 was only 500k

To be fair, there's still a 2:1 install base difference in favour to the 360.

But yeah, the PS3 has always struggled to sell as much software as the 360.

i wouldnt say the ps3 software doesnt sell as well.

to be fair, the only huge selling franchises on the 360 is gears and halo.

mass effect, fable, and forza sell the same as ps3 exclusives.

Since the PS3 slimmed released he's been notoriously anti PS3 and pro 360. He ebbs and flows like the tides with this stuff. Who could forget his "research paper." I wouldn't necessarily say he is a fanboy so much as he just gets his rocks off talking shit to other people.

You can't say PS3 is dominating software, when they only have 2 games in the top 10 compared to 5 for the competition.

I'm not anti ps3, I'm anti ps3 fanboy. You guys the last few months made my dislike for nintendo fanboys back in the day seem tame. But just because I think the 360 is better overall (it's always been like that btw) doesn't mean I hate my ps3, there's room for both in my house.

I don't really know what I'm actually responding to Wiizer, but...

I don't exactly think Sony "won" this month. They saw sales of their flagship console drop off significantly despite having arguably their best game yet release. Combine that with somewhat disappointing sales of Uncharted 2 (only 500k copies in 2 weeks as opposed to Halo 3: ODST which sold 1.5 million in just a week) and I don't think Sony (or their silly fanboys) should run off screaming about how they "won."

I'm also sure Microsoft is thoroughly disappointed in the poor showing from Forza 3. It may have only been on selves for a handful of days in October, but I'm sure they would like to see more out of their flagship racing title.

Funny thing about tmac is that for like a year and a half I thought he was a ps3 fanboy based on his comments. Now he gets yelled at for being a 360 fanboy all the time.

I never compared Forza 3 sales with Uncharted 2. In fact I'm fairly certain that I said Forza 3's performance had to be considered really disappointing from Microsoft for their flagship racing title.

I did however compare ODST sales vs Uncharted 2 and stated that Uncharted 2's sales are disappointing for what is arguably the best game on the PS3 at this point. I compared those numbers from this month's NPD (Uncharted 2) and last months (Halo 3: ODST http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/september-npd-obviously-destined-to-sell-tons/ ). I didn't use worldwide numbers for any title in the comparison.

Hopefully this is just a simple misunderstanding. I'm not trying to troll, I'm just saying that it's hard to look at Uncharted 2 sales and say they aren't disappointing for such a large profile title especially given the fact that it's quality was better than ODST and that it was a better value proposition than ODST.

It outsold the 360 by 71K. OMG, the 360 is done.

And the software top 10 sales have a total of 750K PS3 sales and 1.331 million 360 sales.

Soooo, the PS3 outsells the 360 by 71K units and the 360 outsells the PS3 software by 581K units.

Ummmmm, I am gonna say this month is a tie. And don't worry. The PS3 sales will slow now that the newness of the slim wears off.

Nintendo is still on top of hardware sales. 360 is still 2nd. PS3 still third. It's like looking at an inverse 2004 sales chart (poor gamecube)!

Honestly, I have been pro-sony all my life. Always will be. Hardcore fanboy at that as well. BUT, I can also still see that we arent "dominating". We have been doing very well with our hardware sales and now we have a number 1 in software sales. We should be very grateful. But to say we are dominating is just non-sense. We are doing well but 2 out of the top 10 as compared to Microsoft's 5 as dominating is just silly.
However we are rising to power again! (

im very disappointed for Uncharted. Not in the game, but PS3 players, why does call of duty get 4.5 million in one day, but Uncharted only breaks 1 mil in a month? Shame on you PS3 owners!

I think those good sales for Uncharted 2 actually managed to seriously affect sales of Borderlands on the PS3. Borderlands really didn't have any competition on the 360, which probably explains the much, much higher sales number.

wait, im confused, here it says uncharted only did 580k, but wasnt there just a post that it sold a million? Or was that shipped?
