I don't care about ads if they were to be placed in real world locations. I DO care about "in your face ads" that you would normally see in sports/racing games in other gaming genres or name-dropping by in-game characters. Those two examples are completely unacceptable to me.

Like, if Mario started advertising Draino or something, I'd throw my Wii out the window.

Assuming I had a Wii that is...

rockstar did it best. those guys created their own companies and adverts and put them in the GTA games. That's genius. But I understand..money is the motivation when you have greedy retarded dickheads controlling the industry.

I would like it even better if they were able to have real advertisers, only they would carry the ad money to savings for us, and the advertisers would be lampooned the way GTAs were

They did some real advertisement in their game as well, but it was incredibly subtle and non-intrusive. They promoted and premiered Busta Rhymes new single and some hip hop DJ on one of their radio stations with the lost & the damned

And what's one of the first things people did when it came on PC? Release skin packs that turned "Sprunk" into "Sprite." Coca Cola company would never let GTA use the Sprite name because they make fun of our sugar-drink obsession, but it's not surprising that people swap these things out for real ads...

Honestly, if it is very intrusive I'll pass. I'm drawn to Splinter Cell cause it was always about the story and the immersion... if they're going to screw that up with ads, I don't really want to be playing it.

Don't worry MystileArmor, there are plenty of morons like Jarvis Slacks above who will buy whatever they're told is cool.

Voting with your wallet will only actually mean something good when they take wallets away from stupid people.

God dammit plastic rat, you're worse than he is. He's going to ignore the in game advertising so he can enjoy the game underneath, obviously the most important part? And that makes him a sheep? He's too stupid to be allowed money? Fuck you, you're the one who shouldn't have kids

So wondering, does this crap in any way present a saving for us? Are we going to be paying less for this game somehow because it's partially funded by advertising?

Well, if you really believe that savings are passed on to the consumer, you might also be interested to know that if you put a tooth under your pillow, Dickstein will sneak into your house and switch it for a $1 off coupon for your next purchase of CoolBreez™ Degree Deodorant©.

You sir, get an upvote. Very funny.

My point is though, why the hell SHOULD we put up with adds in our games if we're still paying the same damned price?

The concept is simple: Put up with adds? Pay less. Add Free? Pay more.

This of course would be a great place for us all to simply boycott this game and put an end to this shit once and for all. Sadly it won't happen. Guys like good old Jarvis Slacks above will still go out and buy it, and there's plenty more like him.

Well, anything's possible, but other than indie developers (who advertisers wouldn't be particularly interested in due to low exposure) I can't see someone taking that sort of "moral" approach to in-game advertising. Bottom line is that a business is a business, and yes we're making money, but could we be making MORE money? And if so, let's do that. Passing the savings on to customers, undercutting the competition, all that seems to have fallen to the wayside in the dinosaur-like tread of evolving market conditions, etc etc.

I think, if done tastefully, this isn't really a bad thing. Soda machines could be coke or pepsi, dormant PC monitors can be running a Windows 7 or Nvidia logo as a screensaver... present, but not *intrusive*. It's when it gets right in your face (I believe the Motley Crue posters in a Korean missile silo someone mentioned would be a good example) that it's flat-out obnoxious and validates a consumer movement to refuse to support a product. I don't mean boycotts or petitions so much as educating consumers and hopefully they'll make the choice to avoid supporting negative product trends such as this. But the bottom line is there is a percentile of the population, like your friend Jarvis Slack, who are either going to accept or refuse this sort of service, and it is that lowest common denominator that dictates what is or is not acceptable to the public.

At the same time, there's a reason that products and services like Tivo or Adblock Plus exist... we don't really want to see advertising. It's stupid, it's patronizing, it shovels shit into our line of sight we couldn't give a damn about, and it keeps us from seeing the things we want to see. As long as those trends continue, I think there's still some small hope for mankind... just maybe.

Although if you want to see the alternative, check out the film Idiocracy, a Mike Judge Production. (seriously though, it's scary)

I'm not buying the game if they do that. It ruins the effect if you ask me. Pirating this one if the advertising goes in.

that's a really silly reason to pirate a game... how about just not buy it and not play it at all... what gives you the right to pirate it?

if the ad's aren't in your face or out of place what's the problem? what's wrong with seeing a coca-cola machine, instead of a plain old "cola machine"? it adds realism..... does this really bother you that much that the can machine in the game might have Coca-Cola written on it?

or are you the kind of person who also refuses to leave the house if the advertising on bill boards, bus stops and newspapers doesn't go away? do you not pay for Cable or Satellite TV either because some of the TV channels have ad's on them? get over it.

@ cyruss, actually yeah I don't watch TV for that reason.

"for those of you that don't know, a tv show is something you watch on your laptop"

and I don't read free papers for the same reason. bulk of it is ads, and there is no news.

Put it this way. I buy a game to have an awesome interactive experience. Something that is fun, exciting, new, imaginative. If I'm playing a game (and like Ubisoft said,) and all I'm thinking about is what deodorant I'm gonna buy next, it has ruined the effect of immersion in the game. Imagine if you were watching a one of COD2's epic cut scenes and in the middle of it the someone pulls out a bottle of sprite and starts drinking it like in the ads. It's bullshit. Advertising has it good points. billboards, Cable tv, the internet whatever. but to put it in a game. A GAME! it's a bit fucking ridiculous.

I don't know if you noticed but the XBOX dashboard only ever has ads for gaming related purposes, why because it's a game console. where you play games. if I'm sneaking up behind someone, or watching through a cutscene, or an animation, I don't want the focus of it to be an ad for Old Spice. What the fuck has that got to do with the game. nothing. thus it shouldn't be there.

good god people can be idiots. I highly doubt that we are going to see banner ads in fucking Splinter Cell. More likely that generic pop machine over there will be a Coke machine, and to be honest, I think that's actually a good thing. So long as it's handled naturally, this kind of product placement can actually benefit developers by letting them use brands people are familiar with, as opposed to the retarded sounding products they sometimes come up with.

It doesn't work with every game, no, and to be honest I'd be swinging a club at someones head too if I saw bottles of coke in something like Beyond Good and Evil, but for games where the setting is current day, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Do you really think a country full of raging war-mongering Africans are going to vote for Obama or worry about shaving with Gillette?

If it adds to the realism of the game, then I have nothing against it. What I wouldn't give to see "FOX News" cuts during MW2's campaign when the "the media" comments on things, or, really, a coca cola machine rather than "TASTY COLA" or whatever the alternatives are. It can adds to the realism and make the company some money... I don't hate it.

Well I do fucking hate it when I'm playing FarCry 2 and I have to tell my teammate

"GET THAT SNIPER!!"
"WHERE IS HE?"
"BEHIND THE "VOTE FOR OBAMA BILLBOARD!"

And that's also Ubisoft we're talking about.. so it's not like that's a good sign.

And for this game, why do I have to pay $60 to play a likely 6 hour game just so I can see "Refreshing" coke ads everywhere.

this is nothing new though, plenty of non-sports and non-racing games have in-game advertising, Battlefield 2142 for example

in this day i'd be more surprised if a game DIDN'T have in-game advertising... honestly I don't mind it so long as it's not in your face. An ad for something above a urinal in a game is ok, since you see ad's there all the time in real life.... or billboards that are not out of place, or ad's on bus shelters.... it just makes it more realistic looking

the only game I hope never goes this route is GTA, since their fake ad's are so funny sometimes, i'd hate for them to be lost in favour of real ad's.... probably will be though since GTA seems to be getting rid of a lot of the fun and silly stuff in favour of making the game more realistic.

This is disgusting the way video games are moving. We pay an extra 10 dollars now for some unknown reason (HD gaming has been on PCs for years now at 49.99,must have been some black magic shit). Then, all DLC is charged for, even as far as e-clothing. Now we get ads on top of it? When will enough be enough?

they can do what they want though because people will still throw money at them, gamers are idiots!

look at modern warfare 2, lets face it, it's an average game... singleplayer is extremely short and its not that much of an improvement over COD4..... but Activision could still raise the price by $10 and millions of people jumped at it..... they raised the price for a game that they knew would sell fucktons! i sometimes wonder if theres any limit... how much extra could Activision have charged before ppl would have stopped buying the game
