Behold StarCraft II's Zerg Brutalisk

To be clear, we can't be certain that the massive creature seen above is actually called a Brutalisk. We're just assuming so, based on the image's filename. That said, look at that thing. It's humongous. The StarCraft II Twitter account implies that the massive creature is a "custom" unit from the single-player campaign. Given that the first installment of the game, Wings of Liberty, will focus on the Terrans, we get the feeling that players won't be controlling this bad boy. Our suggestion for dealing with the insectoid pest? Two words: Yamato cannon.

It was originally intended to be a Zerg unit that was supposed to be their answer to the Thor and the Mothership. However when they scaled back the game, they saw no use for the unit in the Zerg multiplayer game.
However, they kept it for the Single Player.
Demon G Sides @ Nov 13th 2009 1:35AM
Actually, i'm thinking of the Omegalisk, but that thing is pretty brutal too.
Vcize @ Nov 13th 2009 9:10AM
So then what exactly IS supposed to be the Zerg equivalent of the mothership in multiplayer?
Demon G Sides @ Nov 13th 2009 12:21PM
Well, since the Zerg are a much smaller race (in regards to technological prowess) and more of a carpetting race, they don't have an "equivalent" unit. However, they have plenty of units that can easily fight a mothership; Mutalisks, Scourge, Hydralisks.
Ghen @ Nov 13th 2009 3:03PM
Doesn't matter if it's in or out for multi, I'm still a zerg player through and through. (and not rushing, that's just lame)

Nuclear Launch Detected.
Seriously, though...I'm still a little shocked that the game is actually releasing next year.
Kn1ves @ Nov 13th 2009 1:43AM
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAhAHAHA no.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 13th 2009 1:45AM
What, you're not shocked?
CaramelZappa @ Nov 13th 2009 2:07AM
It's launching next year, sure, but you'll be paying the same price for 1/3 of the game, and possibly have to pay for online! And it doesn't have lan support!
I'm getting less and less excited for this game every time it's mentioned.
Zeratul25 @ Nov 13th 2009 2:23AM
Actually, I think kn1ves was just expressing his confidence(or lack thereof) that it will actually make it out next year.
And if 1/3 of the game is as big as the entire original was, then I see no reason not to pay a similar price. If they'd given a third of all three campaigns in this first one, and then released two more expansion packs over the next couple years, you'd be getting the same value, but there's be a lot less whining.
CaramelZappa @ Nov 13th 2009 2:38AM
It's really the wrong way to market the game, they announced it as a single game, and now it's 3 separate games. A lot like Bungies fumble of saying ODST was likely to cost $30, and then later saying no no, it's worth $60. Most people will still buy it, sure, but I don't go for that shit. If they actually charge less for it then I might actually pick it up, but no way I'm paying $150 for starcraft 2, regardless of how long it is or how long I've waited for it. If that is how the pricing ends up, I'll probably end up getting it when it's all in a $20 battle chest five years later.
RageOverdose @ Nov 13th 2009 2:50AM
I bet if Blizzard never announced the expansions, the complaining would be minimal. This is no different from ANY expansion of any PC game series, especially not Blizzard games. I'm perfectly willing to get a full-length single-player campaign and the complete multiplayer experience with just one game purchase, and then pay for an updated game with a new single-player game and additional content. I would prefer the 2nd and 3rd expansions cost less, but that's yet to be seen.
And, no, Battle.net shows absolutely no signs of requiring a subscription fee, as they've already denied that the core multiplayer experience will require additional fees. So far, the only "monetizing" of Battle.net comes in the form of premium user-created content that can be sold by players, alongside the option to make things free if the creator wishes (there is probably more to it, but that's all the details I know of so far). Considering that Starcraft 2's editor is so powerful that it can allow for genre-changing "maps" for the game, I wouldn't put it past them to charge for it.
BigD145 @ Nov 13th 2009 1:47AM
Damn three part campaign in separate boxes.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 13th 2009 1:49AM
Only from Activision.
Demon G Sides @ Nov 13th 2009 2:04AM
No. 3 campaigns that are the size of all the previous Blizzard RTS campaigns together, each.
RageOverdose @ Nov 13th 2009 2:51AM
Expansions, completely new to PC gaming.
Blizzard innovates!
Wait...
moo083 @ Nov 13th 2009 1:54AM
I'd say a whole battalion of siege tanks in siege mode would do the trick. Those guys put out a lot of damage.

Zeratul25 @ Nov 13th 2009 2:22AM
No way that thing would hold up against a dozen carriers. I know this is terran campaign so that's not an option, but it'd still be my gut instinct.
Actually, that things probably tall enough to take anti-air hits. Goliaths and Wraiths, with some Siege-mode backup.
iHavepants {SteamPSN: Arkanti} @ Nov 13th 2009 2:34AM
I don't think Goliaths are in Starcraft 2 :(
Zeratul25 @ Nov 13th 2009 2:37AM
Carriers haven't been announced yet either I don't think, But I'm still going to hold faith for the time being.
RageOverdose @ Nov 13th 2009 2:53AM
Carriers have definitely been announced. It's a listed unit on the official website. They had another unit to replace them, but opted to just keep the original Carrier unit.
Zeratul25 @ Nov 13th 2009 3:23AM
Oh, awesome then. Their site updates so rarely/sporadically nowadays I didn't even notice. Thanks!

Avatar @ Nov 13th 2009 7:17AM
This is not Warcraft in space!
redjack @ Nov 13th 2009 10:08AM
Nope, just games workshop in space. The Zerg are the Tyranids with slight Chaos leanings, the Protoss are the Eldar with maybe a little Tau Empire mixed in and the Terrans are the Space Marines.
They need to lift the Chaos Marines and Daemon powers in some way next. Or I guess something along the lines of Necrons would be good as that's just an ancient power we accidentally unleashed on ourselves.
Zeratul25 @ Nov 13th 2009 3:32AM
I agree that it's terrible marketing on their part, but I know a shitstorm would've arisen if they'd only announced one game, and it only had the terran campaign. Or if the campaign were 10 hours between three races, and started some epic stuff, and left it at a cliffhanger because they didn't have enough time to do much of it.
Basically, I don't think there was any good solution. I'm not telling people to accept it or like it, but at least humor the idea that it's not just a money grab on blizzard's part.
Giroro @ Nov 13th 2009 4:13AM
So it's a unit that can't be used until I rebuy the game in 2011 for the zerg campaign?
THANKS ACTIBLIZZARD!
Zeratul25 @ Nov 13th 2009 5:13AM
Actually, the way they worded it, it's a unit you just don't get to use. Maybe in a zerg campaign level, but not in multiplayer at all, even if you buy the zerg edition.
Think of it like the Kerrigan unit, couldn't use that in multiplayer either.
And on the same lines, I'm sure you could make UseMapSettings maps where you can use that brutalisk to your heart's content.
K @ Nov 13th 2009 4:23AM
How many fucking overlords do you need to spawn for that thing!?
JeezWhiz87 @ Nov 13th 2009 6:29AM
Over 9,000.
