In the dilapidated, war-torn streets of the gaming industry, the Console Wars™ have taken their toll on not only the landscape, but also the inhabitants of this once peaceful land. With war mongerers Sony and Microsoft preparing their next wave of battle tech -- motion control devices like the "PlayStation Motion Controller" (rumored: 'Sphere') and Project Natal, respectively -- Nintendo's battle general, Reggie Fils-Aime, recently continued his criticism of rivals by commenting to wartime reporters at Gamasutra that Nintendo isn't really shaking on its Balance Board.
General Fils-Aime said that Nintendo will "applaud anything that will further expand the market of game players" and that the expansion of this kind of technology is really "in everyone's best interest," even though he admits Nintendo could lose some of its marketshare as a result. However, he does feel confident in Nintendo's "head-start of over 51 million controllers."

I agree, but it's not just how that company uses the tech, it's how the company teaches others to use the tech. If Sony or Microsoft only does well with self-published games, they'll risk ending up like Nintendo.

I am predicting Natal peripherals, to make the "experience" feel more real.
Just like any company, there will be some major milking action.

He's not worried because he knows it will be nothing more than a novelty. Like the Power Glove for the NES, it'll look cool, but hardly anyone will buy it.

The Wii was successful, not for it's motion control, but for it's design, marketing and "now everyone can play!" message.
I prefer the PS3 to the 360, but I can say without reservation that Natal is the only device that has the potential to out-Wii the Wii, for 2 reasons.
A) Controller - Simple (remote) controller - no controller. It's the natural progression to rope in non-gamers.
B) It's new (the Sony motion controller is just the next step-up from the Wii remote).
C) It will probably be packed in with a new (looking) piece of hardware, which avoids the "But it's an add-on!" complaint. More so, Microsoft could package the whole thing together far more affordably than Sony could a PS3 + PS Eye + Motion Controller, and require no extra controllers.
It's just really hard to see what else Nintendo (or Sony) could innovate from here on out, until we start heading into "mind control" or "hologram" territory.

Well, I guess they can release a HD Wii anytime they want, and probably for a similar price to the 360.
However I suspect they'll wait until the economy picks up... but i guess if they feel Natal et al are a threat, they might launch it sooner.

This would be very interesting for Nintendo. When these motion controls come out, Nintendo will have lost its only great advantage this generation. They will have to step-up either with better graphics, better multiplayer software. They could also dumb it down with a cheaper hardware price point, or saturate the casual market so much that they won't want any more motion controlled hardware.

The Wii definitely has the advantage with coming with motion controls standard, and after so many years. Sony's is coming out in the Spring and Microsoft's coming out late next year.
