Review: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Gallery: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Friends become enemies constantly, and even though you're almost immediately revived after being forced to fall to your death or pushed into the path of one of the Hammer Bros' errant projectiles, the pain of deception and backstabbery lingers long after (as does losing one of your limited pool of lives). Sure, you can play cooperatively like nice, civilized citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, but where's the fun in that?
The new suits and abilities of Mario and co. really come into their own in the multiplayer. Iceballs thrown at foes turn them into blocks, which you can then hop on to grab that nigh-reachable set of coins ... or you can just be a jerk and throw the blocks at your teammates to stun them. Or you can use the Penguin suit and slide into a buddy, forcing him or her down a dark hole, never to be heard from again. Combine all of these crazy abilities with a simple, two-button control scheme and you have a unique, ridiculous experience almost every time.
While those two-button controls work great, Nintendo needlessly chose to add motion controls for some silly things. For example, you have to shake the Wiimote to raise yourself in the air with the Propeller suit or when you want to pick up other characters. It just feels unneccesarily complicated when you could just press a button. And sorry, folks - no Classic Controller support.
Though the motion controlled bits are annoying, there's not much in the game I'd describe as difficult, despite what Shiggy said. The inclusion of Super Mario World's mid-level checkpoints for stages that, to be honest, only take about five to ten minutes to finish is a little too forgiving. I know Nintendo wanted to eradicate the frustration of having to go through an entire stage again (all 5-10 minutes of it!) should the player perish, I get that, but it's gone way too far, taking the game from accessible to easy. Even though it played like the Mario games of old, it never even approached their challenge.
But how important is that, really, when New Super Mario Bros. Wii is so much fun through and through. Lack of difficulty bugs me, but it does mean that anyone can pick it up and immediately get into it, and anyone can do well in the game. Sure, it sucks there's no online connectivity for the multiplayer, but I know I would miss seeing the expression on friends' faces when I penguin-slid them into a nearby abyss. Even without online, this as an extremely smart rethinking of a tried-and-true formula and with at least one friend (or three), you're going to find New Super Mario Bros. is well-deserving of your hard-earned coins.

I enjoy it even when playing alone!
The Swedish Chief @ Nov 13th 2009 3:37PM
I'm sure you do... ;)
OH you meant that way? My mistake
TheOverlord#2[ OMGITSJAD on Youtube :D] @ Nov 13th 2009 6:38PM
Doesn't everybody enjoy playing with their Wiis by themselves or with friends?
(*Waits for the bad pun downvotes*)
Mickey @ Nov 13th 2009 7:20PM
TWSS!
E.P. @ Nov 13th 2009 3:35PM
I was planning on purchasing this game, until I learned there was no online multi-player.
Taylor @ Nov 13th 2009 3:50PM
I still think they need to make another Donkey Kong Country in this format!
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 13th 2009 3:51PM
It wouldn't be Rare making it, so it'd probably suck.
Matt_M @ Nov 13th 2009 3:56PM
No online multiplayer also killed this for me, considering how prominently multiplayer figures into the appeal. So many Wii games have it already, why not this one? Leaderboards for speedruns, Voice support, etc. It's not like other developers aren't doing this for their games! Grr.
This might be the first Mario platformer game I don't get. Oh well, at least Galaxy 2 is due next year.
charlie b. @ Nov 13th 2009 3:59PM
you spoiled kids these days, with your online multiplayer.
back in my day, we played our video games with real live friends, and we liked it!
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 13th 2009 4:08PM
Normally I would agree with the type of response Charlie b gave, but back in my day my friends weren't all in different areas hundreds of miles from me because of college.
I really wish this had online multi as well as local.
copa @ Nov 13th 2009 4:10PM
Online Multiplayer would be nice, but this game is going to be played primarily in the family room with the kids, so it's not a problem for me.
I'm really pleased with all the publishers putting out big holiday releases (New Super Mario Bros., Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 2) that are engineered from the ground up to be cooperative multiplayer experiences. That's about as much fun as you can have with a console, and it looks like all of these titles are going to do very good sales numbers.
Matias @ Nov 13th 2009 4:39PM
Online multiplayer is way inferior to normal multiplayer, there is nothing like playing with your frineds next to you, and if you can't because they are far, well, get friends enar you.
Online multiplayer only works for mmorpgs and fps.
KFelon @ Nov 13th 2009 5:45PM
No classic controller support is more of a disappointment than online multiplayer.
dood @ Nov 13th 2009 6:36PM
you spoiled kids these days, with your online multiplayer.
back in my day, we just watched our parents VHS porn collection with friends, and we liked it!
aang1818 @ Nov 13th 2009 6:46PM
I also refuse to buy this, mostly because lack of online multiplayer is unforgivable.
The bs excuse that the Wii couldn't keep up was hilarious though, claiming the Wii can't support 4 player online play for what is essentially a DS game to begin with.
But I'm sure this will sell anyways which will convince Nintendo it doesn't need to put the effort into going online at all. Guess it's time to look into getting a PS3.
charlie b. @ Nov 13th 2009 6:57PM
@aang1818
maybe you should try playing the goddamn game before you mouth off.
i got to sample the game at Long Beach Comic Con with my buddy, and i gotta say... it's one of the most fun gaming experiences i've had in YEARS.
i think being fun is as good a reason as any for a game to sell.
Levi @ Nov 13th 2009 8:55PM
look, I can understand complaining about a shooter with bad internet support, but if you can't even find anybody to play a Mario game with you, ya might want to look into euthanasia.
TheE3Guy @ Nov 14th 2009 5:08PM
Let's see, I play my 360 about 80% of the time, my PS3 about 18% of the time, and my Wii about 2% of the time. So on the VERY rare occasion I buy a game for the Wii, I'd appreciate if Nintendo would add in more features like online, seeing as how this is the year 2009, but they act like the internet is still some foreign alien technology. Also, since I hardly play the Wii, I still only have one Wiimote for it and I'm not going to blow $120 to get three more so people can play this game with me.
Paul @ Nov 16th 2009 10:49AM
Huh? Why did everyone downvote this? It DOES suck that the game doesn't have online multiplayer---not everyone is a highschooler whose friends all still live in the same town.
tenor77 @ Nov 16th 2009 7:07PM
Online multiplayer is pointless without voice chat
alinos @ Nov 17th 2009 9:14AM
bah the online in mario isnt a deal breaker at all people these days just want sumthing to bitch about cos they have nothing else to say
sure like mentioned earlier my wii is neglected but its got nothing to do with the fact that certain games dont have online its the fact that there a few worthwhile releases on the thing
among a slew of cookie cutter games on the wii the games like this are the reason to buy a wii
its not hard to get 4 people in the one room and play a video game throw some beer in and when everyones plastered you can make an ass of yourself trying to sing on GH
Jimbotron @ Nov 20th 2009 1:10PM
Not buying a game simply because it lack online multiplayer has to be one of the stupidest things someone can do. You're willing to miss a great game that is a lot of fun simply because you have no friends and have to rely on a computer network to connect you to some? I don't think online multiplayer should be your biggest worry if that's the case.
Hadouken @ Nov 13th 2009 3:38PM
Amazing Experience...
... if you are a kid, living in 1995...
uncle jesse @ Nov 13th 2009 3:45PM
I'm a man who invented the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That's what kind of man I am!
And I want this game, dammit!
JXCgunrunna @ Nov 13th 2009 3:47PM
I was a kid in 1995 and I can tell you he still lives inside of me.
BacteriaEP @ Nov 13th 2009 3:47PM
I remember those days... I loved those days.
Come to me, my precious, and we'll live again like it was the 90s!
Mr Khan @ Nov 13th 2009 3:47PM
Better than being a manchild in 2009, constantly worrying over whether he's "mature" enough
TwEE @ Nov 13th 2009 3:49PM
...But for a grim survivalist like Hadouken only MAN games will do!
Hadouken @ Nov 13th 2009 3:55PM
lol...
For some reason, I'm just tired of Mario, Sonic and all the old school games... Yeah its a new game, but feels like a old game. Bring me something new to the table, new ideas... I played Mario when I was a kid, and I loved, I just not sure if the kids from 2009 enjoy this kinda of games like we did 20 years ago.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 13th 2009 3:57PM
Then they're stupid. Mario is a classic, though for me they still haven't topped SMB3. Still, always good times...
Space @ Nov 13th 2009 4:00PM
hadouken, I with you on this. I could go the rest of my life with out another mario or zelda game. Add Ratchet and clank, resident evil, tomb raider, metal gear, street fighter, mortal kombat and any other franchise that's been beaten to death.
I think I can handle one more uncharted and god of war until I'm sick of those too.
uncle jesse @ Nov 13th 2009 4:03PM
I don't have any kids but if I did, they would like this game. I would MAKE them like this game.
Hadouken @ Nov 13th 2009 4:05PM
@uncle jesse
They probably would be playing Call of Duty 2, talking crap on live like 99% of the kids today...
Sad but true.
uncle jesse @ Nov 13th 2009 4:16PM
Call of Duty 2? My god.
In the year 200000000...
There will be so many Call of Duty games that they will have run out of numbers and started the count all over again.
In the year 200000000.
samfish [wants to know: do midgets have night vision?] @ Nov 13th 2009 4:23PM
There is a 98.6% probability that Hadouken was born in 1995...
Hadouken @ Nov 13th 2009 4:31PM
@ samfish ( Douche McLaughlin)
Wrong
1982 to be more exact.
Rodrigo @ Nov 13th 2009 4:43PM
1982? Are you kidding? MAN YOU ARE SOOOO MATURE :-O !!!!!
Hadouken @ Nov 13th 2009 4:52PM
@ Rodrigo
Deixa de ser viadinho...
JXCgunrunna @ Nov 13th 2009 4:54PM
82? you are not helping yourself out any by saying that.
Hadouken @ Nov 13th 2009 5:07PM
You guys just don't give up... lol
Clearly my main intention was to troll, how long take to realize that ?
1982 is not my age, I am older that that, and yes, I am being immature, A-hole and all the above.
Clearly all you guy are all grow-up and still keep a discussion, just because I said something about the amazing Mario. If you guys, that are so "mature" love to play Mario, well play it, my opinion is irrelevant.
Matthew @ Nov 13th 2009 5:16PM

"I don't have any kids but if I did, they would like this game. I would MAKE them like this game."
What happened to Nicky and Alex?
Weezer @ Nov 13th 2009 7:01PM
How backwards, the troll is the one that got pissed off.
alinos @ Nov 17th 2009 9:19AM

list could go on
hell i wanna new genre all together but wont get that till controls become insanely different from what we have now
The Swedish Chief @ Nov 13th 2009 3:39PM
Nintendo is gonna shake shake shake dat money makah!
cjshrader @ Nov 13th 2009 4:41PM
You just made me want to play Mischief Makers
martyfarty389 @ Nov 14th 2009 9:24PM
Mischief makers WAS my childhood. Good times... shaking and shaking, damn was it tough though.
Orchard Pear @ Nov 13th 2009 3:40PM
Sigh..
I really want this game, but I don't have a Wii.
What a predicament..
Matt_M @ Nov 13th 2009 3:56PM
Do you have money?
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 13th 2009 3:59PM
I'm in the same boat.
And it's not the money, it's the fact that A: I have WAY too many games to beat anyway. and B: That 199 would buy quite a few more used games.
I'll pick it up when it drops to 99.
DakranII @ Nov 13th 2009 4:28PM
Well you're in luck then. $99 Wii at TRU for the next three days.
