Motion control required is a fun killer for me, unfortunately. As a long term geek and a tradesman, my fingers and wrists are already destroyed by carpal tunnel syndrome, I don't need some spastic "thrash your wiimote around to win" motions in my games. How I long for the days of "Nintendo Thumb" syndrome rather than "Nintendo Shattered Your Fucking Wrists To Shake Off A Single Zombie" syndrome.

No More Heroes, Metroid Prime... those are about the only exceptions to the rule.

It really pisses me off when they use motion control just for the hell of it, when a button could do the job better. Motion control is great for games like no more heroes where it's used in a way that's satisfying and meaningful to gameplay, but adding waggle like this (and galaxy) is just a stupid attempt by nintendo to make their motion control seem more relevant. At least they kept it out of brawl.

I loved the use of motion controls in Metroid Prime. It made it feel a little more "in the game".

The motion use here sounds really simple ... but i have to agree with you that it is somewhat a fun killer ... because it takes away the possibility of using classic controler and cube controller ...

or i buy new wiimotes or only 2 player multiplayer for me =/

They should have added Link to the game, only to be interrupted by Navi ever 10 seconds.

"Even though it played like the Mario games of old, it never even approached their challenge."

Well, my number one fear's been confirmed. Why is Nintendo afraid to make a difficult Mario game? I mean, sure, Super Mario Bros. 3 isn't that difficult now that I've played through it countless times, but it had some fairly challenging stages back then.

There's no sense of accomplishment in completing a Mario game anymore. The stages are overly simple, enemies are few and far between, and they throw gratuitous amounts of 1up mushrooms at you every three feet. What's the point?

Then again, "that other gaming journalism site" seems to think it's pretty difficult at times. As a guy with a SMW speed run of just over 12 minutes, I'll see. I'm sure I'll end up renting it next week.

Lack of alternate characters is my biggest grip, too about this game. I can live with the lack of online (although I'm extremely disappointed in it), but no alternate or hidden characters is inexcusable to me.
Maybe it's in part because SMB2 is my favorite Mario game, but I like the thought of being able to play with other characters. Hell, I want to be able to play as Peach, Daisy, Donkey Kong and even Link!

Good news everyone! You can play NSMBW alone in single player and enjoy it, as well as play it with other people when you do have other people to play with! Whew crisis averted!

Seems similar to Punch Out in that there's really nothing new or innovative compared to the previous iteration. I'd prefer to see them take chances like they did with Galaxy ... the least they should have done is online co-op and unlockable characters. Doesn't seem like it's worth $50 especially if it's easy for veteran players. All of that aside the crippler is no classic controller support and required waggle. Personally I would of liked to see them add in new mechanics that make sense like Wario Shake It with it's motion controls ... I still think Shake It is the best game Nintendo has done on the Wii and one of my favorite games this entire generation. Maybe they could of done something like LBP and added an editor for people to create challenge levels ... Maybe next time around. I'll still pick this up but I'll find a deal first.

This review is nearly the complete opposite of IGN's review.

In any case I'm picking this up on Sunday.

Ugh, I couldn't believe IGN's review, especially when the guy devoted an entire paragraph to bashing Nintendo just because it didn't include online play.

Is NSMBWii really the kind of game that would greatly benefit from online play? I don't really think so.

Mr. Fister -

I call exactly the opposite for not having online multiplayer : THANK GOD !

If this game makes you hate your best friend more than when he trows you a blue shell on mario kart ... playing this game with strangers on the internet would make it become a true deathmacht with proportions of creating world wars !

I have 2. I would have more, but 40 dollars apiece is atrocious, and that's not even counting the obligatory Nunchuck and Wiimotion+ addon.

I guess that's another reason why I won't bother with this game

I'm not a big supporter of the Wii and Nintendo in general these days but I think this is awesome. Not revolutionary but it looks so solid and fun. Classic Mario, nothing beats that.

disappointed but not surprised that Shigeru's claims of an apparent difficulty turning out lackluster. They don't even bother putting in more difficult optional paths?? Sigh.

Honest question here (because I don't have the time to hook up my systems of old and check), has there ever been a level in a classic Mario game that was over 10 minutes? Off the top of my head I can't think of any. Sure there were a lot that took forever to beat because they were just that hard; but once you had them down, I remember them being actually kind of short.

If you like the look of this, you should really try LittleBigPlanet on PS3... it's pretty much this except better graphics, customizable levels, and likely more interesting gameplay.

I initially thought that too, but then remembered the frequent glitches while playing online, friends would suddenly disappear from on side of the screen, or lag, only to appear elsewhere or die as a result.

It wasn't our Internet connection, either, because other online games ran fine. LBP was ambitious, but felt like it didn't have the gameplay polish I would expect from a $60 game.

I don't have any concern that jumping will feel responsive and that the game performance won't hurt the experience with a Mario game. That justified the $50 to me.

uhh weiner that was in the online section of LBP a section NSMB doesnt have so that comparison doesnt count

the solo game was fine from recollection

the editor was a little convoluted for the PS3 controller IMO but then im used to making map mods with a mouse and K'board

Been playing this tonight already...manager at a rental store, we got in L4D2, AC2, and Mario all today. I only have 1 controller and the game seems fine. Its just 2D Mario as usual...if you like the DS version I dont see any reason you wouldnt like this one. I am interested in how itd be with four players, seems like it would be pretty fun.

I want to see two reviews for this game, one reviewing the multi-player component and another the single-player side.

I am not a fan of multi-player, I much rather enjoy the single-player experience and for the first time ever with a platforming Mario game, I am not sold on this game. Super Mario Galaxy was perfect, New Super Mario Bros for the DS was perfect as well, I am just not sure how good the single player mode is in this game.

So I picked this up yesterday and I have to say, yeah, complaints about it being too easy are wrong. Maybe if you are ignoring every secret and just making a b-line to the exit, you might consider the difficulty "moderate", but still definately not easy.

Now on the other hand, 1ups are given out like candy (I easily had 99 by the end of world 2, without even trying). Maybe this is what the reviewer meant by easy? I personally don't think it makes the game easy though - all this means is you never see the "Game Over" screen (but in a game with a save feature, this is 100% irrelevant anyways). You still die plenty of times.

I for one love the ease of play and familiarity that goes along with this game. It is one game I can get anyone to play from the gf to parents. It is also easy enough for the 6 year old niece to pick up. There are plenty of hardcore games for gamers to enjoy, I love the idea of beimg able to share this with anyone and have fun with it.
