Dream Theater, a heavy metal band best known for creating songs that are impossible to play in Rock Band -- and, based on the image above, for serving as the artistic inspiration for Metalocalypse's Dethklok -- has chosen to lend its potent rock powers to the soundtrack of God of War III. This announcement was made by Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who mentioned on the band's blog, "we will then enter the studio right after New Year's to write and record a brand new instrumental track for inclusion on the upcoming Gods [sic] Of War 3 soundtrack."
Between the inclusion of this track and the exclusive Trivium song (which was announced late last month), we appreciate the metallic infusion Sony's trying to introduce to the title. However, if it doesn't culminate in an unlockable electric guitar weapon, then you can expect us to be stricken with grief for a few months after the game's release.

they've got some awesome songs, but i feel all of them are a bit too long! A Change Of Seasons is 23 minutes!!!! lol either way great music n great guitaring!
if you've played gh world tour, Pull Me Under is one of the playable tracks, and its probably dream theater's best track ever.

Hah, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence was something like 42 minutes. But I don't know if that's even considered one song, since it has like 8 parts or whatever.
A lot of us share the opinion that DT's best work can be found on Images & Words. Pull Me Under is great and it even got MTV exposure so a lot of people know that song, but there was also Metropolis Pt.1, Another Day, Surrounded, and Take the Time (my personal favorite of any DT song). Giving any of them an intimate listening helps to shed some light on how accomplished that collection was.The whole album is gold and arguably one of the best prog metal releases ever.

Images and Words is an excellent album, but my all time favorite DT album is absolutely Scenes from a Memory.
I wish they would release The Dance of Eternity on Rockband or Guitar Hero that is a song I wouldn't mind playing over and over again on expert.

I don't know how I feel about this.
No disrespect to the band, I'm sure they're good, but I always felt like the God of War soundtrack was not only very epic but also very fitting.
I mean a guitar solo in ancient Greece would be cool, no doubt, but also really really jarring.

It's going to be "Prince of Persia: Warrior Within" all over again....
And that's not a good thing..

comparing to sands of time, warrior within wasn't a good thing.
but generally, the music really fit warrior within imo. the dark and gloomy game needed that hard rock godsmack music. especially the crow boss battle music. it gave the gameplay a sense of excitement and violent intensity.
if dream theatre can come up with something along the lines of the god of war epic awesome orchestra style music with a dash of some heavy metal, i dont see why it would fail.

Um, I can understand the confusion, considering that the article makes it seem as though both this and Trivium are going to be heard in-game, but that not true. I can almost 100% guarantee that these songs will be part of "God of War: Blood and Metal EP", which is a part of God of War III: Ultimate Edition.
Griffin, you might want to update the article mentioning the the album to prevent further outcry. It would be absurd for licensed music to appear in-game.

This is for the "Heavy Metal EP" for the Ultimate edition, not the game itself. Or at least, that is my guess

"I will personally hunt down and kill anyone who compares Dream Theater to Dragonforce. For one thing, Dream Theater can actually play the ridiculously technical music they make, and don't have to artificially speed it up in the studio like Dragonforce do"
Apparently you have never seen Dragonforce live. All they're songs may sound pretty much the same, and they may be ridiculously cheesy, but they can play their guitars very, very fast.

Nevermind, just listened to them. They are awful. So they make bad, ridiculously hard songs for Rock Band... Are they the new Dragonforce?

you're an idiot, they've been around since 89, long before Dragonforce. Panic Attack is one of the worst songs to get a feel for them. Give "Pull Me Under" a listen before you lump this band in with Dragonforce

Other than that, you can also listen to something like Solitary Shell to hear that they actually put thought into what they write, rather than just ridiculous crap like in Through the Fire and Flames.

It does when you ask if they're the new Dragonforce

Do you like Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and/or Rush? Also like metal? Then you will like Dream Theater. Check out Scenes from a Memory, it's their best album.

Just read your second comment, they are in no way like Dragon Force. Put simply, DF write songs that are played at super sonic speed, DT writes hugely complicated, complex songs.

"DT now in the same sentence as Metallica"
Uhh... Yeah. I wasn't even comparing them, they are just both metal bands from the 90's. I could say Backstreet boys and Dream theater are both from the 90's, doesn't mean I am comparing them.
I never even knew this band existed yet alone have fanboys. (Why it would have fanboys is beyond my comprehension.) Oh, and I like Pink Floyd and Rush, don't know who King Crimson is.

Wow, that picture makes them look like pricks. They're actually not entirely heavy metal, and Rock Band has some of their worst music in it, though it'll probably be pretty representative of what'll end up in God of War III.
Either way, I love Dream Theater, but I don't understand why people put modern music in games like God of War.

And for something a bit less "Metal" that truly qualifies Petrucci as one of the greatest guitarmen of our generation, check out "An Evening With Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci."

Look: I like some metal, particularly non-American crap (as in Meshuggah, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Opeth, et cetera). However, I am totally AGAINST placing metal and rock into the God of War series. This is supposed to take place in (ancient?) Greece --- what the HELL is metal doing in ancient Greece? This is absolutely retarded. I loved the atmospheric orchestral score that was done in the previous two games and am totally appalled at the decision to include this into the series. For some reason, everyone seems to assume that adding rock also adds an "edge" to the games (see: Prince of Persia post The Sands of Time).
