Man, is this National Awesome Half-Life 2 Mod Weekend, or what?
Machinima.com user (and assumed Source engine guru) m0rtanius recently made a 3D adaptation of the first level of Castlevania, which you can view in the video after the jump. Before you pass judgment on this mod, we suggest you view this clip from Castlevania 64.
We've come a long way, baby.

Dawn of Sorrows had Pistols too, was my alternate weapon kit for taking out annoyances at long range.

...I'm guessing, using context clues, that he meant "I don't remember pistols in Castlevania [the game]" not "I don't remember pistols in Castlevania [the series]". Especially considering that the former is what the video depicts? Seriously, what is the point of the pistol in the video? The crowbar works for a representation of the whip, is the pistol supposed to be dagger or something?
Oh, but to add to the list, Henry of Legacy of Darkness used a revolver.

They said HL3 would take over 3 centuries to complete so making it in episodes and then repackaging them as HL3 would allow them to make money while finishing the game, and not have most of the fans dying off.

Cool, I guess, but is this really anything special?
It's not even a mod, per se, since everything there could just be set up simply using Hammer. :/
Maybe if they had created something unique for it, but all it seems to me is some amateurish level design and HL2 resources.

not really dude, "mod" is a term used in the ... modding community ... to describe something more than just a level. I guess this might count as a mod a while ago, or if it was a full level pack, in which all levels have completely replaced textures like that. But not one level. That's just a map.
Calling a custom level a "mod" because it's a modification is like calling Counter-Strike survival horror, because you are trying to survive, and getting shot at can be scary...

That's nice and all and it plays well with gamer nostalgia, much like the hundred others or so mods that copy themes from Mario, The Simpsons, Legos, Teletubbies, etc. But did it add anything worthwhile? See, for every one Garry's mod there are things like these where you can see talent wasted in mimicking ideas that other people already did better.
How about featuring mods like Dear Esther (http://www.moddb.com/mods/dear-esther) or a UT3 mod called Hazard - The Journey Of Life (http://www.demruth.com/hazard.htm). Mods that tried to do something different, something worthwhile, something that is not just a cheap imitation of an established franchise, something that will not be featured on sites supposedly on the cutting edge of gaming journalism because it doesn't touch that oh so important gamer nostalgia.

Because Dear Esther doesn't have 2D sprites and doesn't have funny 8bit music in a 3D engine.

I can't speak for anyone else, but if *I* was filled with ambition and a hunger for new, horizon-broadening experiences, I wouldn't be on a video game news website.

This makes me wonder about the fabled episode 3. It's been so long, that at this point I'm going to be pretty pissed if it's a 3-4 hour campaign.

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd post a response (given Hazard was mentioned). Hazard is no longer a mod. It's now a standalone game. It's coming in 2010, and will be much better than the mod. :)
Thanks,
- Alex
