Though Modern Warfare 2 is rife with instantly accessible, beloved characters with fascinating names, we all know that one stands out as the franchise's most memorable protagonist: Ghost. You know, Ghost! He's got that skull mask, and there was that one scene where that guy's about to shoot you, and then Ghost shoots him right back. He's already risen to fame somewhat when he received a six-part comic series telling his story -- but if the actor who provides the spectral hero's voice is to be believed, he might just show up in his own video game as well.
Craig Fairbrass, who not only did the voice for Ghost in MW2, but also voiced the equally unfortunately named Gaz in the original Modern Warfare, mentioned, "I'm now voicing a guy called Ghost, who now just got a spin-off comic of his own and they're talking about another little game to go with it." Little game? Based on the number of Michael Bay-esque explosions in the first five minutes of Modern Warfare 2, we're not sure Infinity Ward is capable of making those.

I'm still sayin it's Gaz, same actor, same catch phrase. So let's say Gaz is shot in the face, bullet goes through his jaw area, not brain. Gaz lives and there is the reason he wears the mask...

What ShadowReaper said makes a lot of sense though, that could also explain his name "Ghost"

I don't think Ghost is Gaz AT ALL. Ghost could be a "ghost" of Gaz (not literally) because Zakhaev killed Gaz at point blank range and there's absolutely no way he or anyone could have missed his head and shot his face. It was extremely close for a miss and the gun was pointed right at the top of his head, too.
To play devil's advocate, I guess Zakhaev was a bad shot and hit his face instead. Gaz could have played dead, somehow someway tricking Zakhaev he actually shot him in the head

i think Ghost is Gaz, too, there's a lot of evidence to back up that theory. in fact, near the end of the campaign, i thought one character actually called him Gaz, but that could have just been because it was late and i was tired. and i'd already decided Ghost was Gaz. it's possible that Gaz survived MW1, but... well... if Ghost gets his own game, i'm gonna go ahead and guess it takes place BEFORE the events of MW2, lol.

To those who say Zakhaev couldn't have missed, I can guarantee that I hit Zakhaev in the nose with my sniper bullet (I took the Coriolis effect into account!) and the damn storyline said I only blew off his arm, so nothing can be taken for granted.

Probably one of the few things about MW2 SP that I consider absolutely, undiluted, 100% awesome was the fact that they didn't even try to hide that they were using the same voice actor in the same role to replace a deceased character (RIP Gaz).
There's just something reassuring about that guy's voice in the role of Primary NCO. He's still cold blooded, but he's nicer than Price. Tell me what to do, Ghost/Gaz. I'm confused.

Hate to break the news, but it is Gaz they specifically call him Gaz at one point. The reason he wears the mask is because his face is all screwed up from being shot in the face. Also yes you can live from being shot in the head. Since he survived the bullet shot it's probably likely he survived the burning as well.
I think they're doing a spoof on DeadPool.

You weren't being led on like a sucker - it's on purpose: Gaz dead, voice resurfaces from a masked mystery character known as... Ghost?
It's definitely him, just with some inexplicable supernatural/survive the unsurvivable thing happening for the sake of storytelling. It's the same way Price keeps showing up, no matter what war we're in - he's like some archetypal "old soul" that shows you the ropes to keep you alive. If we can get killed umpteen times trying to take some hill, only to be reborn at the last checkpoint to do it all again, why can't the other characters in the world be doing something similar? Trés meta! IW is leaving it up to the player to figure that out, no need to confirm it, to baby-spoon it into our mouths. To paraphrase Price, "Believe or Don't Believe, your choice."
I buy into it - I love the character development in these CoD games, running alongside some killer single-player and multi-player action. Pretty good for a videogame series.

It IS Gaz. Beat it on Vetaren and wait til after the credits and he takes off his mask. You don't think people can survive headshots? They can, they are just hideiously disfigured.

Gotta be him, supposedly the blood came from his cheek while he was shot if ya look close, that would leave hideous scars leaving him to put on the mask, the skull is a symbol of living dead I guess and his cheek/mouth area would be wrecked that's why the skull prints only on the bottom part.

Gaz/Ghost will probably end up being the Kenny of Call of Duty. He'll die in every game but he'll come back somehow in the next game.

I was thinking the same thing Jesus!
Although I think Ghost isn't Gaz, this theory of him wearing the mask because he's disfigured is a good one!!
***spoiler alert***
I just wish he wasn't dead.

Gaz's last name was Carmine. Ghost is his brother. their older brother died from a sniper bullet, because there was something wrong with his gun. it kept jamming.

I was so sad when he was killed, I wept manly tears.

@sly - That's not what I got out of it. I got the part about him losing the men during COD4, but when does it say that Shepherd put Makarov up to it? I thought that Shepherd (Spoilers obviously coming in huge numbers) killed Roach/Ghost/Etc because he didn't want them divulging the information that Makarov had been behind the attack on Russia, and not an American. I guess it's just semantics at that point, because the reasoning is still because he wants to be a war hero, but I do loves me some lore and if I missed a fairly critical plot point (such as Shepherd being behind the attack) I'll have to go back and play again.
MW2 has a convoluted story in the vein of Metal Gear Solid (sort of) but it doesn't tend to have the exhaustive explanation cut scenes that MGS does. The result is that you've (or maybe just me..) have no idea what the hell is happening most of the time. Story isn't exactly the draw of the game, but a little more explanation would have been nice, especially since we'll be going after Makarov (I'd assume) in MW3.

Maybe it's because the campaign was over before I could blink, but I don't even really remember Ghost that well. I'm replaying it on veteran so I guess I'll have to pay more attention.

*SPOILERS*
ghost is the one who goes with you to makarov's safehouse. he's the one who pulls you out of danger and to shepherd's helicopter. then shepherd shoots roach (you) then ghost, then his men douse them with gasoline, then he throws a lit cigar on you and you watch yourself burn to death. how do you not remember that part? it was the most memorably scene for me, even more memorable than the end.

Yes I remember all of the events, but not names because the characters are so unmemorable and bland.
This isn't exactly mass effect here....

The villain (redacted to avoid spoiling) is probably the worst example I've ever seen. It actually would have been better if they revealed he was literally in league with the devil, because at least then his actions would have made some kind of sense.
