Miyamoto: Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be 'really difficult'

Here's our absolutely ridiculous prediction: Miyamoto and crew are going to do with this sequel what they did with Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Since Galaxy 2 is basically another level pack for an existing game, the team is going to make it almost impossible to complete.
Of course, that won't happen. More likely, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be on par with the first game in terms of challenge, but will include the Super Guide to stay consistent with Nintendo's current strategy.

Nice try Miyamoto. Nice try.
Brysonial the Bison @ Nov 16th 2009 5:30PM
I really hope it's more difficult because in my mind new super mario bros. ds was to easy and so was super mario galaxy. Also nintendo please don't make it so that to get every star you have to play the whole game over as another character.
Levi @ Nov 16th 2009 6:26PM
OP is right tho... he said the same thing about NSMBWii, and it wasn't difficult...
elmer @ Nov 17th 2009 11:16AM
Dammit, did you beat that bloody purple coin disappearing platform level? Any harder and I'll scratch my eyes out. Or am I not 'real gamer' enough?
Granger @ Nov 16th 2009 1:08PM
I hope it's difficult. Mario games are becoming way too easy, give me something more than the same repeat boss battles with the three-hit victory please.
WREturns [Planeteer I Power of The Final Countdown] Personal Shopper of the ATDF @ Nov 16th 2009 1:21PM
I'm pretty sure that's almost every boss fight in almost every video game ever.
Granger @ Nov 16th 2009 1:26PM
I can't believe you've never played Ninja Gaiden Black, or Mega Man, or Metroid, or Castlevania, or Zelda, or I don't know... Pretty much every other game ever. The only games that take this approach are the post-Mario 64 3D platformers from Nintendo and Rare.
TwEE @ Nov 16th 2009 2:24PM
When have the boss battles in Mario been hard? They've always been easy haven't they?
D-5 @ Nov 16th 2009 2:34PM
Boom Boom was an asshole with his flailing arms and all.
Rodrigo @ Nov 16th 2009 8:06PM
Yes... Now the bosses will be killed with 8 hits, like sonic, which is 'cooler'.
...
kidding, i think we need more "Asshole-bosses", doesnt matter how manny hits, but just make them less DUMB!
xtremeholymuffin @ Nov 16th 2009 8:52PM
Well there was that big guy made out of stones in the haunted house level of SMG that was totally disproportionately hard compared to the rest of the bosses in the game.
Blank-Mage (ATDFs Nuker) @ Nov 16th 2009 1:12PM
I look at everything with incredible amounts of cynicism. The world has proven this to be the wisest choice of action.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 16th 2009 1:34PM
Oh, you too?
Maybe that's why I like Dr. McCoy...
samfish [wants to know: do midgets have night vision?] @ Nov 16th 2009 2:11PM
I hope you mean DeForest Kelley, since he IS the real McCoy.
(see what I did there? see? see??)
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 16th 2009 2:14PM
*sigh*
Yes, I c wat u did thar.
And yes, I mean DeForest Kelley.
copa @ Nov 16th 2009 1:13PM
I actually thought the difficulty in SMG was perfect. It was simple enough that I could enjoy playing it with my kids, but hard enough that we got a real sense of accomplishment once we got 120 stars.
captain underpants and the bringdown gang @ Nov 16th 2009 1:14PM
there are 121 stars, and than you have to do it all over again with luigi.
Ghen @ Nov 16th 2009 1:22PM
Getting the 60ish stars needed to finish the game was perfectly easy, and then the rest were slightly increasing difficulties until around the 105 mark perfection is required... Hopefully they'll do that again, because it felt perfect to me.
acefondu @ Nov 16th 2009 1:45PM
Thank you! As a seasoned gamer I too thought mastering all 120 stars was difficult, and more so than most games of the genre ie Banjo series, Donkey Kong 64, and the other 3D Mario games. SMG was an absolute blast can't wait for the next one.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 16th 2009 1:56PM
Oh, god...DK64...
Finding all 201 Golden Bananas nearly killed me, but it was worth it.
Classic game.
samfish [wants to know: do midgets have night vision?] @ Nov 16th 2009 2:01PM
I agree...I thought the difficultly level in Galaxy was pretty much perfect.
Finito (PSN: Wretched_Walrus) @ Nov 16th 2009 2:31PM
I completely disagree. I don't remember exactly how hard Mario 64 and Sunshine were because I was pretty young and not as good a gamer, but from what I remember they were hard. Galaxy was ridiculously easy. I'm not some tough guy or anything, but I was disappointed that you could get A LOT of the stars within a minute of entering the level. There are legitimate challenges here and there but they were few and far between. I feel the same way with OoT versus TP. Maybe I just don't remember the past correctly, but I still hope Galaxy 2 is way harder.
Massmass @ Nov 16th 2009 3:10PM
Galaxy offered me very little challenge at all. it was enjoyable but I literally only had to play through it once (screw Luigi) to collect almost everything. It was too obvious and linear and it definitely exhibits Nintendo's new policy of pandering.
At least Mario 64 and Sunshine were more difficult. Not by much but they were also more clever in hiding some of the stars/shines. In fact, I didn't completely beat Mario 64 until it came out on the DS and it was made easier with the other characters. I never did beat Sunshine though, it bored me towards the middle point, at least what I think is the middle point, of the game.
The boss battles were all too easy though, in every one of them. They should take note from Zelda and then upgrade the difficulty and whimsy.
Josh @ Nov 16th 2009 3:27PM
The final boss battle of Super Mario World was incredibly easy.
Mr Khan @ Nov 16th 2009 3:50PM
Yeah, i never really got the complaints from the "Galaxy was too easy!" crowd myself, i think it had a good curve, like all the 3D Marios have.
Levi @ Nov 16th 2009 11:28PM
It really was far easier to just get through the game than Mario 64. Seriously, go back and play it. Mario 64 is harder.
I also agree with one of the down ranked posts above, in that I didn't like the odd linearity of Galaxy. Itwas built with levels with multiple paths, but it wasn't like Mario 64, where the level had all of the challenges built all over it like a jungle gym. Instead, you do one little thing here, blast over to this planet, do one more obvious thing here, blast off to a little rock... The game really held your hand through the whole thing. I think that was my biggest complaint.
Nevertheless, I got about 3/4ths through the game before I got too bored to go on. I've been thinking about picking it up again to get all the stars, where the challenge supposedly is.
Brodo @ Nov 17th 2009 1:00AM
@ Finito
LOL you thought that the starbits were the stars didnt you?
"Im so good at this game, I already got 120!" "What a lame game"
turns off game and sells to gamestop for a wooden nickle
razer922 @ Nov 16th 2009 1:19PM
If it's anywhere near Lost Levels difficulty, no one will buy it except the hardcore gamers and the parents too stupid to realize it's that hard. That said, if it's near Lost Levels difficulty, I will buy ten copies. I haven't bought a Mario game that I really enjoyed (not including remakes like SMA2: SMW) since Super Mario Sunshine. It felt like the series actually tried something new and did a damn good job with it.
Giroro @ Nov 16th 2009 7:19PM
Correction: Everyone will buy it, no one will beat it.
Do you really think people buy Mario games based on content?
Skaz @ Nov 17th 2009 1:30AM
The misinformed parents alone will make up tens of millions of the sales.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 16th 2009 1:20PM
I want something hard. When you compare the original trilogy and SMW to the newest ones...there's no comparison.
Enosoma @ Nov 16th 2009 1:45PM
"I want something hard"
I see what you did there.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 16th 2009 1:48PM
Pervert.
But it's the internet...what else should I expect?
Viking @ Nov 16th 2009 1:53PM
Couldn't you at least say "That's what she said" ? Look less like a pervert that way, and it's a joke that almost never gets old.. almost.
D-5 @ Nov 16th 2009 2:24PM
I always thought Super Mario World was on the easy-side, at least when compared to the original trilogy. Trying to beat SMB3 straight-through without whistles was hell.
CheeziePotato @ Nov 16th 2009 4:56PM
Yeah, I too thought Super Mario World was a little too easy.
WREturns [Planeteer I Power of The Final Countdown] Personal Shopper of the ATDF @ Nov 16th 2009 1:23PM
I thought that Sunshine was hard, but not in a good way.
Y2JEDGE_PSN @ Nov 16th 2009 1:28PM
I know what you mean I got so pissed with Sunshine and almost didn't buy Galaxy
Warlock @ Nov 16th 2009 1:29PM
Yeah, clumsy controls + bad camera in the levels where your water pack was taken away was annoying.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 16th 2009 1:30PM
I'm still undecided on Sunshine.
It's kind of the bastard stepchild of the core Mario franchise.
Like Wind Waker.
Markez @ Nov 16th 2009 1:43PM
Sunshine was my fave, I really really love that game.
samfish [wants to know: do midgets have night vision?] @ Nov 16th 2009 2:07PM
I didn't much care for Sunshine, either. I especially hated that giant, sprawling hub world. I wandered around lost and looking for the level entrances half the time, it seemed like.
God, I hope they never make an open world Mario game (although it kinda sounds good on paper).
GewurztraminerX @ Nov 16th 2009 4:22PM
I definitely liked Sunshine more than SM64, and I also liked Wind Waker more than Ocarina.
Camera and controls are my main reasons.
Having a PlayStation instead of the N64 at the time may also be a contributing factor.
CheeziePotato @ Nov 16th 2009 4:59PM
FUCK YOU! Mario Sunshine and The Wind Waker are the best!
bm @ Nov 16th 2009 5:24PM
I agree with every word Cheeziepotato said. Even the first two.
Mr Khan @ Nov 16th 2009 6:20PM
I agree with CheeziePotato too, neither were really the bastard child. They both did things differently, but not in a way that felt awkwardly sewn on to the game itself
FLUDD really helped accentuate Mario's freedom of movement, and the only way Sunshine really felt "off" was that every world was a "real place," (such as it could) whereas it's never felt like you were going anywhere real in the other games
Also the Blue Coins. Not a fan of those.
Warlock @ Nov 16th 2009 1:27PM
I actually liked the "tips videos" they included with NSMB Wii. The "Super Skills" ones were extremely fun to watch (they were basically like watching speed runs of specific levels). I hope they include those in Galaxy 2 as well.
Xoonaka @ Nov 16th 2009 1:28PM
Maybe Nintendo's new strategy of appealing to the "hardcore" is to just keep remaking their existing properties casuals like, but make them harder.
Not sure I see this ending well, if that's the case.
Granger @ Nov 16th 2009 1:34PM
The only reason Nintendo didn't completely die last generation was because they kept remaking their existing properties. That's why people owned a GameCube, and why so many people own a Wii and simultaneously complain that they are ignoring their hardcore fan base by NOT culling from their properties enough or in meaningful enough ways (handing them out to third parties or relegating the characters to one-off casual affairs).
Xoonaka @ Nov 16th 2009 5:05PM
True there.
It's a tad amazing to me how Japanese developers can consistently re-market the same franchise. I would have to attribute it to their willingness to completely change things. Franchises like Mario and Final Fantasy both do this quite a bit, whereas franchises from the West work hard to retain as much of the original as possible, such as God of War.
It's too early to say, but plenty of Western games are beginning to establish a staying presence, so that point may be moot.
It's an interesting discussion piece, at least.
