With the launch of Assassin's Creed 2 today, Ubisoft has officially lifted the veil on its Achievement/Trophy-like "Uplay" program. First revealed at E3 (though minimally detailed), Ubisoft claims it to be an "online destination where gamers are at the center of a connected gaming universe," intended to link all Ubisoft titles across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Players can access the Uplay portal through the web or in-game, with AC2 being the first title to include the still-in-beta service.
Of the "four primary services" Uplay includes – titled "Win," "Help," "Share" and "shop" – only Uplay Win is currently available in the beta. Ubisoft explains Uplay Win as "[enabling] players to collect units based on their actions in the games and exchange them for rewards such as exclusive in-game content or digital items," the first of which are an Altaïr outfit and "access to the Auditore Family Crypt" (among other things). We've yet to fully plunge the depths of Uplay's offerings in Assassin's Creed 2, but if there's anything really exciting, we'll be sure to let you know all about it. Keep it locked!

Interesting...this could prove useful.
But I literally do not have one Ubisoft title.
At all.

So, you've missed out on Far Cry 1/2, Assassin's Creed 1/2, Beyond Good and Evil, Splinter Cell, Myst series, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Prince of Persia.
And you call yourself a Dark Lord/Gamer.

I forgot I had Prince of Persia.
Sold it.
Just because I don't like Ubisoft's titles doesn't mean I'm not a 'gamer'.

nice! if more games implement this, multilayer games will have much more players and this sort of "unifies" the consoles. this also means that the games which will feature this will be all up to date! no more outdated versions of games! (think TF2 on ps3/360)

Eh, it _sorta_ unifies them. You can earn points in games on one platform and cash them in for rewards on another, but you have to unlock rewards for each platform individually (even on the same game). Still not really unified in my book.
I do still feel it's a neat way to provide some extra content for those who really care.

This seems to me like a service that's designed to submit your information for marketing/research purposes. By promising exclusive content, they'll get you to sign up which would send information based on location, gamertag, length of play, achievements etc etc accross many games so that they can monitor you and build a profile.
Could be wrong though.

Ding ding ding! Right in one! The one thing I've never understood is why this is bad exactly? I mean MS/Sony/Nintendo already track this kind of info on us all. If the end result for sharing the information is free crap for me, and games more tailored to my likes/dislikes/playstyle... I don't see how that's a bad thing.

Well, the fact that it stores achievements across games is useful, but don't some sites (was it Giantbomb or CAG?) have achievement/trophy trackers for any game on their database? Sounds like frivolous software right now, but it's too early to make a definite decision.

between this, Steam, Windows Live and GameSpy im going to have a lot of "useful" crap on my computer. im not saying all this stuff is pointless but it would be nice to have a standardized online system for all PC games. Steam is about as close as it gets right now.

Well... Steam. It's good for selling you games, and... uh... managing your friend list?
But yeah, it's a matter of the PC not having their own version of XBL or PSN, no standardized, built-in social networking/storefront service. Even if the PC isn't the thriving platform it once was, I'm sure one company commanding a virtual deathgrip on consumer interests and buying patterns is sitting on a healthy pile of money.
I think the problem inherent is that PC users don't really want a default service, that's why we've got so many browsers, apps, instant messaging programs, hell, operating systems! Gonna be a tough sell unless Dell decides to launch one, heh.

I checked that out during my last go round in AC2 and didn't really get the purpose. Hopefully it will be very useful to expanding an already hot game, imo. Loving it and I can't put it down...except to do things like get on the internet and eat and take a leak and, and, and...I'm about to get back on this game, in a minute.

One of the main reasons i don't own a 360 is to avoid the annoying-12 year old-homophobic-racist-so called "gamers".
Now they want go get me to try something like Home (which I don't use anyways), with these type of people?
Pass...

Actually, I really don't like FPSs. The only one I've ever liked is Killzone 2 and that's only when I play with friends.
And yes the community is extremely important to me, that's why I bought the PS3. I hate all the high pitched name calling and unsportsmanlike attitude by most 360 gamers. Don't get me wrong.... It's not like everyone is like that, but that's the advantage of buying a $600 console. It's more probable you will only find mature gamers.
And since I don't really care for FPSs, I basically missed out on Gears, Crackdown and Fable. That's it. Besides, paying extra so i can play online, well, to put it mildly, is not my idea of smart.

It sounds really good. Like some of the high hopes that haven't materialized [yet] in relation to Playstation Home.
For awhile, my friend and I were speculating that the trophy system was going to be attached to points that could be spent in Home for fabulous goods.

Yea, it does seem like you'll unlock pretty much everything in one play through. I unlocked the map last night, so I'm looking forward to giving it a shot when I get home.

This sounds like what EA does. I don't like having another service on top of my Xbox Gamertag/PSN Username.

I unlocked the bonus level in AC2 last night but didn't have time to do it. Actually, I probably won't even be able to find it, as none of the landmark buildings are located on the map. You just kinda stumble into them.
