Even though the face expression is a little "0.o", Beyoncé is still hot. :)

Yeah, nothing new here. Marketing sells the sizzle, not the steak.

Yeah really. Advertising exists for a reason.

Even now with easy access to reviews for pretty much anything that can be bought, advertising and perception of a brand is still a big deal.

So first you post a handicapped dog, and now you laugh at it?

You are more evil than me, and since my name's DARTH Tre that's saying something.

This should be surprising to no one.

I give you exhibit A-Z: Hollywood Blockbusters.

Initial week movie attendance is highly marketing driven.
Video game sales are highly dependent on the initial weeks.

It's not much of a stretch to go from the one to the other and see that video game sales are likely to be highly dependent on marketing.

But not all movies are summer blockbusters.

And many Wii games are showing to have that "long tail" sales effect. This is the less obvious relationship: what roles do marketing and scores have with these types of games?

It doesn't help that she's holding the DSi sideways...

Regardless, I'd still smash. It's a shame she's pregnant, though. :(

Yea, but the people who get burned by the hype machines aren't going to keep it up forever. People will start learning their lesson, and choose quality over what gets the most exposure. Of course, by then there will be a fresh set of noobs to take their place, and the cycle continues....

And how long has it been since review scores =/= marketing? About 6-10 years give or take for the gaming industry? I mean everyone in this business is in someone elses' pockets. Just look at weblogs blogs and their recent mass promotion of Apple products these past few years? Joystiq & Engadget the most obvious of the bunch, it's no secret the deal AOL/Time Warner has with Apple.

I dunno about other games, but Rhythm Heaven did pretty well for a mostly unknown game. Having Beyonce in the commercial may have really helped

Word of mouth rules... that's why you'll see shit keep selling, like Mario kart wii (whats that at 18 million now?) when professional reviewers took a poo on it and give it a low score... plus, everybody knows quality is subjective..blaa blaa blaa..

mario kart wii is hardly 'shit'. it also didn't get 'a low score'. (82 metacritic is 'low' now?)

Pro reviewers downrated it because, while being totally f***ing awesome, it was totally f***ing awesome in pretty much exactly the same way as every other recent mario kart game (except with online support). Oh, and some of them didn't like the (optional) wheel accessory. If this had been the first ever Mario Kart game, it would probably have a 95+ metacritic. Guess what? For very many Wii owners, this probably *is* their first ever Mario Kart game (or at least the first 3d one). And the wheel accessory is fun.

I agree word of mouth is what sells that game (and most other full-price games that keep selling long after release). I can't think of many full-price games that kept selling that weren't actually good (at least for their category - a lot of people don't like Wii Fit, for instance, but that's generally not because they think it's a particularly bad fitness game, it's because they don't like the whole idea of fitness games).

as if this isn't obvious from the terrible games that sell well and the excellent games that barely blip on the radar.
