Gearbox has declared that Borderlands, the studio's original RPG-FPS ("RPS") hybrid, is the current leader in the annual undercard, the race to fastest-selling new IP of the year. While it might not make it onto a second-printing retail box, the accolade is still significant, as it implies that a new game has at least been noticed among the familiar franchises that dominate the monthly sales charts. What better hook to land a publisher when pitching a sequel?
Going by not entirely public NPD sales figures (in North America), Gearbox has determined that Borderlands had the most launch-week sales of any new IP in 2009. The only other title that could contest that would be Prototype, which enjoyed greater sales on the Xbox 360 platform (but just by 1,900 units) than did Borderlands when comparing the two games' respective launch months (419.9k vs. 418k units). However, Prototype, which released June 9, was available at retail for 11 more days during its launch month than was Borderlands (October 20). While we don't know total sales of either title during their launch months (both were released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC), it's reasonable to assume that Borderlands is the fast-selling new IP (during a launch week), if not the best-selling one in combined platform sales for a launch month in 2009.
So, congratulations! But watch out for Dragon Age: Origins -- we hear it's fast, too.

Looking at the numbers, Dragon Age, which is also a new IP, is gonna pass Borderlands by the end of the year. A lot more DA:O commericals and marketing are going into that bioware game than Gearbox made also.

Agreed. He should let his games do the talking - they are awesome.

Is it true you can't do anything in the game after level 50? Yet to pick this game up, probably after I get around to picking up MW2 :/

Love me some Gearbox. Plano, Texas' own!
I'd love to see them take the Brothers in Arms series in a new direction for their next game.

"The 360 didn't have an exclusive game drop so everyone had to flock to borderlands and brutal legend that month. PS3 owners were playing and I'm assuming enjoying Uncharted 2."
You are trying to have a different sort of argument, that I'm not interested in.
The OP said that PS3 Borderlands sales were so good that they should convince Gabe to release another 4-player co-op shooter, L4D2, on the platform.
I'm saying no, the PS3 Borderlands sales don't make a good case for that.

The OP stated that and it is a valid point. And a Valve release game would have met the same fate on PS3 when put up against Uncharted 2
My comment was to everyone who stated that the PS3 version was outsold 4 to 1.
Well no shit, there was something else vying for PS3 owners dollars at the time. Like Tmac said it still would have been outsold by the 360 probably but not by such a large margin.

So what's your argument? Are you suggesting that they abandon the PS3 and spend that time making more profitable games for the 360. If that's the case then I would have to point out that more money is spent conceptualizing and developing ideas on paper than is actually spent executing them.
the hardest, most expensive part is the idea, once you have that... the rest is just planning and execution. may as well get the most out of your idea

Too bad it was also the most bugged game I have ever played. You couldn't play with your friends on PS3, the lag is HORRIBLE, I mean the very first scene, you can't even watch the cinematic normally.
How could they have not noticed that?! Definitely the last game I purchase from gearbox. I can't imagine how bad Colonial Marines will be! AvP for me =D

I got platinum too! I'm just saying they really botched the PS3 version. Just read the forums! Immense lag, mics working half the time, people losing their saved games, etc... ridiculous!

Randy can say what he wants, but let's just put this little factoid out there.
If Borderlands can get even REMOTELY close to the 1.8m units [sell-thru - not sell-in] that Prototype achieved, then he has a point.
First month sell-thru comparisons are pure vanity statements - after the true Xmas blockbusters are done, let's see how many legs Borderlands truly has.
If it breaks 1m units lifetime I'll be impressed. Sales decline curve doesn't lie.

An excellent game. I was getting worried for a while with Gearbox projects getting shelved left and right, I'm glad they shipped a title and have met with positive reviews and sales. Got to keep that cash flowing.

I wish Borderlands were a better game. If it had a story and better ending I would have no problem buying the DLC and getting pumped for Borderlands 2. It's really just a stripped down MMORPG in which you can shoot...too bad.

I was disappointed it doesnt have online splitscreen coop, my gf is enjoying the hell out of this game with me splitscreen at our house, too bad we don't each have a ps3 though, the splitscreen is a bit crammed, but stil fun! My friend and his wife have a copy and I was totally excited we would get some couples gaming on, each of us were a bit into it, lvl 17-20 range, only to be extremely disappointed! Couldve been an even more amazing mp experience, haven't tried it yet but i dont think it supports splitscreen lan either. If you're going to do 4 player coop in a sequel, please implement this feature, it's a must have for me and us couples gamers!

Bugfest game that is mind-numbingly boring in single player. However, co-op almost makes up for single player shortcomings. Still, buggiest game since Fallout3. Is it really that hard to keep the cars from getting stuck on broken rocks that are 6" out of the dust?
