Square Enix chief confident in Modern Warfare 2's success in Japan
78
Western-developed games have rarely found success in Japan. However, Square Enix head Yoichi Wada doesn't believe it's because of inherent nationalism. "In the past, Japanese retailers have said that Japanese gamers have their own idiosyncrasies and tastes, and that that is the reason why the audience is not accepting of overseas titles," Wada told Ars Technica. "But I believe that is not the case, it was just a matter of poorly executed marketing."
Microsoft would probably take offense to that claim, considering it has poured considerable effort into the territory with arguably little return. Still, Capcom's success with the Grand Theft Auto franchise shows that Japanese gamers aren't entirely adverse to Western-style games. Square Enix believes it can follow suit with Modern Warfare 2, which launches in Japan in December, given the publisher's "extensive experience with the Japanese market."
We're not exactly sure what Square Enix is doing to increase Modern Warfare's appeal in Japan (the image above is not part of the campaign), but it seems to be working. Taketo Matsuo, a representative of Japanese retailer Tsutaya, has predicted Modern Warfare 2 to be one of Japan's top 10 games this holiday. Considering the rest of the list is made up of new Final Fantasy, Mario and Zelda games, that would be quite an accomplishment.

I doubt this game will even chart in Japan.
Unless it's like 1 yen.

There's quite a large Japanese community on Battlefield Bad Company, and bloody hell they are good at the game, so I wouldn't be surprised if MW2 makes a big splash over there. When I was in Japan this time last year the number of huge GTAIV ads and translated materials was awesome.

Although in saying that, marketing MW2 would have to involve separating it as far as possible from World at War, which wouldn't have gone down too well at all with Japanese gamers.

MW2 isn't as dialogue/text heavy as most JRPGs that get localised. I'd assume they save a lot of time with translation.

I honestly think that MW2 will bomb in Japan because it's a first person shooter. For some reason the people over there tend to be more susceptible to motion sickness when playing any sort of first person game. I think there'll be a slight spike in sales, mainly because of the global popularity associated with the title, but the game'll soon fade into obscurity. On top of that, Final Fantasy XIII will be shipping about the same time and that will kill any sort of chance MW2 would have had at garnering an audience in Japan. As for why GTA did as well as it did, it's simply that it's a third person perspective game. I'd actually like to see the sales numbers of Gears of War and Halo 3 and see how they compare.

But the japanese don't like to buy good games, so this won't do well.

Quality of the genre? It is one of the best FPS games out there. Especially as a package with Single player, Co op, and Multiplayer. If it doesn't sell it is because Japan has a different culture, and preferences than the Western World.

Pardon me if I didn't like buying Modern Warfare 1.1.
It's not that special.
And, yes, the Japanese have some taste issues.

What an original statement: a sequel is merely small additions. The amount of content they added to MW2 is amazing. Spec ops wasn't in COD4, and the Multiplayer has changed (Kill streaks, unlockables, etc...)
Of course I know you don't like the facts, and your arrogance means that there is nothing anyone can do to convince you otherwise.

MW2 is really similar to COD4. It's just the same game with the same engine, same gameplay, different storyline, and tons of shit flying through the air in multiplayer. It's a good game and downvote me if you like, but it's just Modern Warfare 1.5

It doesn't change the fact that I feel like I'm playing CoD4 all over again.
Hardly anything changed, other than some perk modifications.
Spec Ops is alright, I'll give you that, but it didn't really appeal to me.
I expected a good campaign like Modern Warfare and got a unpolished mess.
Maybe some people like it, but I don't.

You can make that statement about any sequel. It seems people make that statement to any game that is remotely popular (i.e. Halo)

It's not really fair to make that statement about all sequels.
Nearly every FF game has been built from a new engine.
All major Halo titles have used new engines (ODST was a spinoff).
IW is still using the Quake III engine, which is probably why the game feels the exact same.

FF is the same damn game every time but with new characters (that actually act the same way, since the japanese only know how to make 1 character).

Really? That is your argument. New engine means new game? Even though Halo was made in a new engine it felt like Halo.
Final Fantasy is the exception, mainly because it is just a brand. There is no real continuity across the games.

If you play all three Halo titles, the differences are much larger than the Call of Duty series.

The Japanese taste-criticism in these comments is a little uncalled for I think. They don't HAVE to like Western games in much the same way we don't HAVE to like Japanese-styled games.
If MW2 flops then maybe it's to do with a lack of interest because it's a game from the point of view of American soldiers and British SAS. Not everyone will be interested in that. Maybe there's even a factor of war-time sensitivity given Japan's history, who knows. Just gotta wait and see how it goes.
Think of all the things Japan has given to gaming!

Dreaded Fear is on a rampage lately defending his precious Modern Warfare 2. Personally, I thought it was overrated but then again I'm not a fan of the multiplayer and the campaign itself was horrid compared to the first iteration. Not to mention it ended as soon as it started to get good. I'm not going to say the game sucks or that it's garbage but I do think it's overrated and believe it or not I like the first Modern Warfare and World At War better than MW2.

I'm not a big Halo fan but the difference between Halo 2 & 3 is staggering compared to the difference in MW 1 & 2. Maybe it's because they are on different hardware. A better example might be comparing Uncharted and Uncharted 2. Now, that was a huge and completely unique experience much more so than the additions made to MW2. I'm playing Assassins Creed 2 now and even though it's the same core game it feels light years ahead of the first title. I just don't get the feeling with MW2 that it's some grandiose improvement to the genre and the series. The only thing IW really did differently in this one was adding in Spec Ops which I personally think is the fantastic. It's like they made the game from the exact same asset batch as the first one without doing any sort of upgrades. The first game released so long ago in gaming time (over 2 years ago) that the graphics aren't as mind blowing as before. Maybe it's just me but it didn't knock me off my socks like I figured it would based on the hype, developer pedigree and how great the first game was.
I guess at the end of the day they didn't add enough new stuff to part 2 compared to how high they set the bar with part 1. It was a bit of a letdown for me.
