I'm just upset we still don't have a rated "R" rating. M is < R and AO > R. I really love what MW2 did. The No Russian mission was fantastic. I've always wanted games to be allowed to make the player feel un-nerved or uneasy.

I'm probably going to spontaneously combust for saying this, but, Thank you Activision, thank you for disturbing me.

But what would you hide? I don't recall and particular scene that was more violent than other that they would have hidden.

Gah... I butchered that sentence. It should say:

I don't recall any particular scene that was more violent than any other that they would have hidden to get a lower rating.

From what I've heard of ESRB policy, if the first gets one rating, they just slap the same rating on the sequel.

Really? U2 had constant swearing and violence. How could it be a teen?

I live in the UK and age ratings are done by numbers, games like L4D and Bioshock are 18's (highest) whilst games like Halo are 15/16's. But pisses me off that MW2 is an 18 >_>

There was NOT that much swearing at all in U2. I don't think anyone ever says "fuck" throughout the whole game.

But I am curious about the violence. It seems that the violence and blood effects are on par with games like Call of Duty and Halo (rated M), maybe it's because the context is different. Playing an Indiana Jones type character fighting to survive I guess makes it a liiiiittle more okay.

uhhh you can say shit a few times in a Rated T game....just like you can in a rated PG-13 movie...

Uncharted 2 didn't even use it that much....there was NO blood all over the place...why would it have got a M rating? "Gratuitous Treasure slinging"?

i dont understand the M rating for Halo or CoD either. In WaW maybe cause they added decapitations, leg explosions and what not but i havent ever seen that in MW2. And Halo, man, they dont even say fuck or shit, and the blood is just blood, no head explosions or maiming like other games.

The airport scene alone would probably earn MW2 the M rating. I think the CoD games are distinctly more violent than Halo or Uncharted. Halo should be Teen IMO.

I've even seen parent groups (shock) question Halo's M rating. Quite a few people feel that, at least, 3 didn't deserve it.

In CoD the blood splatters on walls behind enemies, same with Halo. I think the death animations in CoD are also a lot more visceral and realistic.

Like I said, I think context has a lot to do with it as well.

@DeepFriedSushi

First thing I did when I read this article, ctrl+F "Uncharted" It may not be as brutal as other games, but you're still shooting humans in the head with blood spatter. And when you compare it to other games with T ratings, example, the original Ratchet and Clank, it really doesn't make any sense at all.

I've seen games that were rated incorrectly, yes. But it was always too high. For example, Halo 3 really doesn't deserve that M rating. Putting it in the same class as GTA and company?

"Adult Themed" shouldn't mean the same thing as "high maturity rating". The ratings are to make us aware of content, so people can not expose kids to inappropriate content. But media can be "for adults" without including nakedness, swearing, or extreme/realistic violence.

Like Nightmare Before Christmas. It's a pretty dark premise, and it's "appropriate" for kids, but really it appeals more to an older audience.

I remember finding it surprising that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune only had an M rating. I personally felt that the T rating was accurate, but I was surprised nonetheless.

Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard is rated T and it doesn't have any blood at all.

Personally, I think the ESRB aren't very good at rating games.

For example, any game with nudity gets an automatic M, but blood and violence (a la the first Uncharted) can still be rated T.

Which would you rather your kids see in real life? Someone getting shot or some boobies?

I don't understand it either; why would parents rather let their children see how to kill humans instead of how to make humans?

That's true... there are psychopaths in the asylum and lots of people die in the course of the game, but it's worth pointing out that Batman does not kill. He is very unique among action adventure protagonists in this regard... compared to Batman, Nathan Drake, with his massive body count, is a genocidal maniac...

I'm really surprised that anyone felt that Batman possibly deserved an M rating. It had very little blood, very little language, no nudity.......

A T-rating was just right for that game.

Consider films....The MPAA rated Titanic PG-13 (the equivalent of a T-rating), even though it had full-frontal nudity and a sex scene.

I feel as though a game should only be rated M if it has lots of blood, gore, sex, and/or drug usage.

Yeah thats one thing about Batman.. He never kills his foes, only incapacitates them.
Going off on a tangent.. thats one thing I didn't like about the Burton Batman movies.. They end up killing off most of the enemies that were showed.

This is also troublesome because here we are, fighting the good fight, trying to get parents involved with what their kids are experiencing, trying to get them to pay fucking attention to the ratings and decide what's appropriate and what's not. Getting them to realize that not all games are for kids and the developers aren't to blame and that it's wrong to censor mature games for the benefit of children who shouldn't be playing them in the first place. And now here we find some developers are subverting the whole process! Thanks a lot guys for undermining the whole system.
