Hands-on: Blu-ray Digital Copy for PSP
There are a few steps you must take to activate the PSP copy. When you insert the Blu-ray disc into the PS3, you'll see two icons appear on the XMB, one that allows you to store a SD version of the movie to your PS3 hard drive. You must be logged on to the PlayStation Network and then enter a unique 12-digit code included with the disc. Once the activation process is complete, a 2GB file will transfer to your PS3. You can watch this movie on the hard drive (but why would you when you have the Blu-ray disc?), or you can copy it over to the PSP -- a process which takes about five minutes total.
The video quality of the "Digital Copy" is fantastic, especially on the PSP's smaller screen. Unfortunately, the initial batch of movies leaves a lot to be desired: Godzilla (the 1998 American version), The Ugly Truth and Angels & Demons. Hopefully, SPHE will start implementing the feature on some ... y'know, good movies in the future.

kind of a nice feature, not all that practical though
Extinction @ Nov 18th 2009 10:29PM
I wish theyd just enable remoteplay during dvds and bluray movies.
They have no reason not to
Levi @ Nov 18th 2009 10:37PM
they should just figure out how to let us rip our whole collection to our PSPs. Same with Apple's got-dang locked down hardware. Apple's content control for their rentals would be perfect. Let us play it once all the way through, then it disables. Rip it again to watch the digital copy again. Of course, this isn't Sony's issue, and I guess they are doing what they can, and it's pretty cool.

I think I need sleep, I read the title as hard-on...
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 18th 2009 8:42PM
...you can do a hands-on of that though.
ThorSkaagi @ Nov 18th 2009 8:51PM
Good one :P I lul'd a bit there, I admit.

sweet!!?!?
CrissCross87 @ Nov 19th 2009 5:08AM
For all the blu-ray discs that i have seen that come with a Digital Copy, they store them on a 2nd disc. so this initiative they are doing is to eliminate the 2nd disc and push PS3 sales unless these discs can be put on PCs to rip the SD data.
whylekat @ Nov 18th 2009 8:42PM
So you buy Hogh Def Blu-Ray then copy a shitty Standard Def version onto the PS3????
Am I understanding this correctly?
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 18th 2009 8:42PM
...which you can then copy onto your PSP.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 18th 2009 8:43PM
Don't know what Hogh Def is.
And it's a handheld. Can't always have HD.
whylekat @ Nov 18th 2009 8:52PM
Christ dude it's a typo! So yes, you know exactly what it is. I hope you're smart enough to figure out the "i" & "o" are right next to each other...
And my question is more based on why you want a Standard Def version of something you own in Blu-Ray. That's so dumb.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 18th 2009 8:53PM
Because there's no such thing as a portable Blu-Ray player. And I don't have to have a BD-ROM drive for my computer to crunch a HD movie into SD so I can take it with me.
whylekat @ Nov 18th 2009 9:11PM
My question still stands.. Why have a HUGE standard def film eating up HDD space? If it copies to ps3 then to PsP then deletes it, that sorta makes sense. But why would anyone keep/use that feature?? (assuming everyone with a PS3 has HD.)
And if it's for the sole reason to copy movies to PSP that's dumb because most solid Blu Ray titles come with a digital copy already.
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 18th 2009 9:18PM
@whylekat
I can't fucking believe that you still don't understand... kids these days.
whylekat @ Nov 18th 2009 9:24PM
I understand fine. Just seems like a big waste to me considering most movies (especially Blu-Rays) already come with a digital copy.
Maybe this is just a PS3 thing and I'm subconciously trolling. Srry.
Jacksons @ Nov 18th 2009 11:21PM
It really cannot be simplified any further.
Jerk Face @ Nov 18th 2009 11:28PM
You're only putting it on the damned hard drive so that you can transfer it to the PSP. PSP's don't have Blu Ray drives. How else do you think it could magically appear there? After that, I'm sure you can delete the thing from the PS3's HDD.
el serpiente @ Nov 19th 2009 12:44AM
Now, now, be gentle. The Lord blesses us with different quantities of intellectual capacity. Whylekat's may be shallower than most farm animals-nevertheless he is still one of God's creatures, bless his soul.
whylekat @ Nov 18th 2009 8:42PM
So you buy High Def Blu-Ray then copy a shitty Standard Def version onto the PS3????
Am I understanding this correctly?
RKN (Steam ID: nerdydesi) @ Nov 18th 2009 9:12PM
Which you then copy to the PSP and delete from the PS3 if you wish, JESUS!
D-5 @ Nov 19th 2009 10:19AM
Your sentence confused me as well. Can you go a bit slower and simplify it for me? Maybe break it down into 5-6 short sentences in bullet point form?
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 18th 2009 8:42PM
This sounds like a good idea.
But only three movies?
And only one really good one?
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 18th 2009 8:43PM
...so far! These are just the first movies to support this new feature.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 18th 2009 8:44PM
As long as more titles are implemented, I'm fine with it.
Yet another reason to buy a PSP...

I'm sorry, which of those movies listed could possibly be conceived as "good"?
Double J @ Nov 18th 2009 8:42PM
I try to give Emmerich a pass for making a niche for himself in cheesy disaster movies, then I think of Godzilla and damn him to eternal suffering.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 18th 2009 8:44PM
I actually kinda liked Godzilla.
Better than The Day After Tomorrow...
Xeones25 @ Nov 18th 2009 8:45PM
2 GB is kind of ridiculous for a movie with the resolution of a PSP screen. You can rip your own DVD movie and have it come out around 1 GB (I've seen them range from 700 MB to 1.4 GB). There is no way you would need higher than DVD quality on the PSP, you could even compress it and still probably get the same image quality on the PSP.
eat my face [ wiizer is a party pooper ] @ Nov 18th 2009 8:47PM
hey with that 16gb Go memory should it really matter ;]
ChuckBartowski (ATDF Technical Consultant) @ Nov 18th 2009 8:48PM
I agree. Thats gigantic
Phylogenetics @ Nov 18th 2009 8:58PM
16 gigs could only store about 16ish movies minus whatever games you have! What if I feel like watching Godzilla and Angels and Demons and 8 other movies on the same day? What would I do then?
zenaxe @ Nov 19th 2009 1:12PM
Agreed, actually when I rip a movie for the PSP a set a limit of 500MB using the H.264 encoder and it works great for a 2hr or less movie. My PSP Phat has a 32Gb Memory Stick and its full. If you're a media hound and like choice on the go, 16Gb is really not that big at all, IMHO. No way am I bothering with 2Gb digital copies.
ChuckBartowski (ATDF Technical Consultant) @ Nov 18th 2009 8:45PM
You mean gojira?
Jerk Face @ Nov 18th 2009 11:31PM
It's the terrible, terrible American version; so no, they don't!
HeXeN {?????} @ Nov 18th 2009 8:46PM
It sounds really convenient.I wonder thought if all the studios will do this or just the studios owned by Sony?
Shiaoran @ Nov 18th 2009 8:47PM
Fuck you, Godzilla was awesome!
It shows that USA could never handle the real Godzilla, who bitchslapped Zilla like it's NOTHING!
Pretty much like how they can't handle a Godzilla movie.
ChuckBartowski (ATDF Technical Consultant) @ Nov 18th 2009 8:49PM
wait what? Did you day the same thing twice?
Mike @ Nov 18th 2009 8:48PM
2 GB for an SD video file? Wow, Sony, you REALLY suck at compression. Seriously, I store my movies in high-quality H.264 480p, averaging about 500 MB for a 90 minute flick.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 18th 2009 8:50PM
I usually go a bit larger than that. Around 700-900 MB for most movies.
Mike @ Nov 18th 2009 8:54PM
Using H.264? Probably a little overkill. I'm watching some stuff on my 32" 720p TV and it looks great, no noticeable compression artifacts at all (in fact looks identical to the standard 700 MB AVIs I converted them from).
Either way, 700 MB is still a third of what Sony is compressing things at, and probably looks identical.
Sly @ Nov 18th 2009 9:28PM
most of my movies are around 350-400MB with good picture quality.
Shiaoran @ Nov 18th 2009 8:50PM

Monster =/= movie.
