Sony
announced that the next iteration of the PlayStation 3's firmware will be available for download starting today.
Version 3.10 adds Facebook functionality to the PS3, including automatic Trophy and purchase updates. It also allows developers to include "trigger points" for Facebook integration in their PS3 games. Sony calls this Facebook service "the first phase of a variety of new features to further connect and enhance the online social experiences of PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system owner."
Other, less marquee features, include a new grid layout for photos and an updated friends list with the ability for users to change the background color of profiles. You can see the update in action on video
here.

I'm not so interested in this as I'm not bothered about social networking, but I can appreciate that this is a good update. Others on the other hand can't stop complaining about it, and I can't really understand why. Sure, it may not be quite as fleshed out as it could've been, but it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination. Just be patient.
I guess to some people everything is weak. We all know that the one big update people are waiting for is cross game chat/invites. But it seems that anything else will simply be brushed aside and slandered.
Some can’t appreciate the little things that enhance the overall product.

thank you, you pretty much summed everything i feel about this topic.
Why do people look down on FaceBook? i use it alot, i connect with my work buddys (who i game with), my younger siblings, my HS friends. Are people just going to act like all gamers are anti-social or we hate on anything mainstream. I love this app on the PS3, and wlecome it very much so.
but people who are not with it don't see it as any benifit to them so they give it and its supporters a hard time because Sony doesn't give into THEIR demenads. Like cross game chat (which i myself have no use for)
phinnvr6 @ Nov 18th 2009 11:19AM
No one is going to appreciate the little things until Sony takes care of the big ones. PS3 as a great console (especially at its newish price point and the ridiculously good exclusives its had out lately, like demons souls, uncharted 2, etc), free online, blu-ray, netflix, etc.
But everyone simply wants cross game voice chat (the cross game text chat rooms it has just don't cut it). In addition to that it needs to auto-sync trophies. Those two features is all Sony should care about since that's what everyone keeps asking for.
Platinum_Skeet @ Nov 18th 2009 12:03PM
The only gripe I have about the PS3 and Xbox360 Facebook experience is that you have to be in Facebook UI get the status updates. It would be a lot better to see updates while your in games or be able to check it on the side.
It would be a perfect thing to check scores or news updates between matches for games but how it's implemented right now I don't see myself using it much...
Come Get Me!!! @ Nov 18th 2009 12:18PM
@DamonTheMoney. i agree 100% but you and i both know when cross game chat/invite happens...people will still bitch.
PSN: John-Paul-Jones (click for last.fm profile!) @ Nov 18th 2009 2:06PM
Free updates are awesome, but what I'm waiting for more than cross game chat are new avatars! When are they coming? I know I've been rambling about avatars for a long time now because I think they are way overdue and a lot of them suck ass. C'mon, Sony! You can do it! =D
mahouneko @ Nov 18th 2009 2:14PM
@Damon:
I agree with you in the sense that I'm not terribly interested in Facebook integration being included with the patch. What has surprised me is how fast Sony brought out Facebook integration in the first place. I mean, Microsoft's Facebook integration didn't kick in for everyone until what? Yesterday?
Heimbachae @ Nov 18th 2009 6:15PM
what update? i just tried updating over the internet and it said my ps3 was up to date soooooo it's like 6:15 on the east coast sony, WHERE'S THE UPDATE SONY!!??
RYVAL @ Nov 18th 2009 10:16PM
...and best of all... (and what people seem to forget) the updates are FREE.
TypeF @ Nov 18th 2009 10:20PM
TIME TO PLAY ME SOME FARMVILLE ON MY PS3 YEEEEEAAAAAHHHH BOY!!!!!!
Spam @ Nov 18th 2009 10:51AM
This better be blockable in the same way apps are. With many friends who play PS a little too fanatically, and who enjoy bragging, this will probably get very annoying very fast.
And trigger points? That just sounds like giving a message every time you acheive something like, say, getting a kill streak on MW2. Now THAT would be annoying, given how many devoted (and bloody good) COD fans I'm friends with :/
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 10:58AM
every other app is blockable on facebook so why wouldnt this be? although I believe that just blocks it from sending you invites etc, but you will still see them as I still see all the countless mafia wars, farmville and stupid quizzes
thing is if you do block said app and they add the ability to find PSN friends on facebook then you won't have that luxury...
Spam @ Nov 18th 2009 11:00AM
By block I meant hide.
And if they do add the functionality to find friends with PSN, that would be pretty great. But only until I get everyone's PSN. Then I'll hide it fo' sho'

Whoopdy doo
*twirls finger in the air*
Ashitaka @ Nov 18th 2009 12:07PM
What's that supposed to mean?
Kinsey @ Nov 18th 2009 3:13PM
Kind of loses all meaning being typed out rather than acted out.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 10:53AM
a setup for the other added functionality no doubt. but the fact still remains that it took all of a day to throw in some code that would shoot out trophy info and purchases to your profile wall/news feed...
It will most likely be early next year before we see an actual APP that allows photo uploads and viewing, and stat updates....
I'd much rather they had added Auto-Syncing for trophies.....I mean that should have been an instant thing that ran in the background since trophies were first implemented....
XBL: xGeneral DEATHx PSN: Deeth82 [Planeteer | Power of General Hostility and Angst] @ Nov 18th 2009 1:05PM
Agreed. Automatic Trophy Sync and Cross-Game Chat/Invites, plz!
All the same, as PS3 owners we still can't argue that it's nice to have all this stuff without a subscription fee. And for the record (before people start bitching), I own a 360 as well and have a Gold subscription to Live. And so far, I feel like PS3 has almost everything I need, except for the points stated above...oh, and L4D2.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 1:09PM
I'm renting L4D2 and will play online during this "Free" weekend.....after that it goes back to gamefly.....
but yea a UNIVERSAL Cross-game invite system would be nice...as some games ahve already implemented them....I get invites to play Uncharted 2 all the time while playing other games....
dont particularly care for the cross game chat....as I stated before I dont wanna hear someones convo about another game while I am playing something different...but it will be nice to shut people up....
XBL: xGeneral DEATHx PSN: Deeth82 [Planeteer | Power of General Hostility and Angst] @ Nov 18th 2009 1:12PM
I think you'll thoroughly enjoy L4D2...probably not enough to subscribe to Gold, but it's a lot of fun. Right now, it's the only thing standing between my Live Subscription and its horrid, slow demise. I started off this gen as one of the 360's most staunch supporters, but Sony has proven that though they had a slow start, their system really does have some serious merit.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 2:20PM
honestly to ME the ONLY thing that would make be get gold would be IF REACH is actually about something....OR if Gears 3 comes out next year and does NOT come out on PC or PS3....I mean people argue that its worth paying for...and I'm just like ok...for you it is....but for me, a guy who get only EXCLUSIVES on the 360 and Halo 3 is not one of said exclusives....its just not worth it to me...
mahouneko @ Nov 18th 2009 2:29PM
@Chris:
What do you mean by trophy-sync?
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 2:32PM
as of know we have to MANUALLY sync the trophies....which happens by selecting sync or by looking at a PSN profile....it NEEDS to be ran in the background as soon as you get said trophy...like Live does...
mahouneko @ Nov 18th 2009 2:34PM
@Chris:
Ah, I see. (You can tell that I don't care about gamer score/achievements/trophies at all).
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 2:42PM
lol....I would say I don't care....cause I don't really...but it kinda shows what type of games I play at least....I think thats a good thing...
making it auto update would also kill part of the complaint about it taking too long to look at peoples profiles...
mahouneko @ Nov 18th 2009 4:06PM
@Chris:
Interesting. I haven't had the need to go and look up other people's profiles that much mostly because I see my friends often enough to know what they've been playing.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 4:09PM
I gotcha....although I talk to MOST of my PSN friends off of PSN(on various sites, etc) its always nice to see what their interests are......a LOT of my friends have been playing Demon Souls like crazy.....and I wouldnt have ever thought they were into that type of game if not for checking profiles
mahouneko @ Nov 18th 2009 4:21PM
@Chris:
Hahahaha! Yeah, I've been preaching the Gospel of Demon's Souls to my friends to the point where they all caved in and bought the game. Now they curse me for introducing them to a game that they haven't been able to put down for well over a month, even with the launch of Modern Warfare 2.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 4:24PM
part of me wants to get it....but I don't need an addictive game right now...lol...
mahouneko @ Nov 18th 2009 4:35PM
@Chris:
Considering that Atlus had to do another print run because of ridiculously high demand, I'd say that you should definitely pick it up now while it's still in stock or at least wait until Black Friday. Atlus isn't known for making massive print runs for their niche titles and it shows... as eBay items going for well over the original retail price.
You don't have to play the game immediately. Just buy the game so that it is well within your reach to play it whenever you feel like getting addicted. Otherwise, you'll be cursing yourself on missing out on an excellent game.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 4:47PM
I might have to do that then....I hate to have games sitting there that I can't play...lol...but you have a point.....thanks for the advice.....
mahouneko @ Nov 18th 2009 5:25PM
You're welcome. Also, thanks for explaining the trophy-sync thing. :D
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 5:30PM
no problem at all...
robert @ Nov 18th 2009 10:54AM
Being the Otaku that I am, i would rather my friends didn't know I play video games so often, so i don't really like this update.
Ashitaka @ Nov 18th 2009 12:09PM
Well, you don't have to use it, so there's no problem at all...
KingOfHearts @ Nov 18th 2009 12:26PM
Wow... You're ashamed of your game-playing? What are your friends gonna do if they do find out you play games a lot? Not like you anymore?
robert @ Nov 18th 2009 2:33PM
Well, no, they wouldn't stop being my friends, they'd just lose a lot of respect for me.
Kamikit @ Nov 18th 2009 7:49PM
If they'd lose respect for you because you play games, You need some better friends.
Ves @ Nov 18th 2009 10:54AM
Glad this is an option feature.
Good work on the cosmetical looks though.
Julian @ Nov 18th 2009 10:57AM
Microsoft: We now have facebook on the Xbox 360!
*A Day Later*
Sony: You've always been able to check facebook with our browser, but now you can send you Trophy, game purchases and in game event updates to facebook automatically!!!
Grimcicle @ Nov 18th 2009 9:22PM
Except that the PS3 browser's poor Javascript support renders Facebook almost entirely unusable.
jcj2391 @ Nov 18th 2009 10:56AM
cool i'm a facebook guy so i might use this
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Nov 18th 2009 10:56AM
This would be great if Facebook wasn't a bag of crap. Well it could be worse; we could get Myspace.
XBL: xGeneral DEATHx PSN: Deeth82 [Planeteer | Power of General Hostility and Angst] @ Nov 18th 2009 1:07PM
Ugh...can you imagine all the "custom" profile pages with fucking glitter and youtube videos that play automatically all at once?!?! Even teh Cell couldn't handle all of that crap.
Shimrra @ Nov 18th 2009 10:58AM
I will wait on updating after the last one they did I am going to wait it out for a bit just incase.
ryan @ Nov 18th 2009 11:01AM
Finally, transparent friend profiles.
packy17 @ Nov 18th 2009 12:45PM
+1. I'm really glad they listened to the fan outcry after 3.00. They do look a bit more transparent, but I'm hoping for an opacity setting so we can tweak it to be exactly how we want it. The colors are a better change IMO.
pd771 @ Nov 18th 2009 11:00AM
I guess this takes a little wind out of the sails of Microsoft.... maybe... I doubt anyone really cared about the new firmware updates for either console.
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Nov 18th 2009 11:11AM
Well I don't think anyone cared about Facebook or Twitter but a few people wanted last.fm (as for myself, Vidzones fine).
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 18th 2009 11:19AM
for those that cared about facebook no biggie because as it stands now the facebook integration is nothing more than posting to your wall....its not like you can see pictures or add friends or anything like that yet...
