VGA 2009 nominees revealed, Uncharted 2 head of the pack

The 2009 crop of nominees in Spike's Video Game Awards is out, and we've got a big announcement to make. We're not going to make fun of them. For starters, most of the categories seem pretty on point, with eight noms for Uncharted 2, seven for Batman: Arkham Asylum, and six for both Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, which all seem pretty deserving.

Furthermore, we don't want to rob you commenters of the fun of individually savaging the few embarrassing sections of the list, which honestly, make their own comedy gravy.

Stymied? Okay, we'll get you started, but just this one, cool? Borderlands is up for Best RPG, huh? That's the best pick since Serious Sam won for "Best Dating/Train Conducting Sim."

We're assuming you can take it from there.

Thats my list ... REACT TO ME ... it's tough because I don't have a 360 anymore so for some of those categories I just had to guess at which I thought was best. Not the most scientific method I know ...

i was really conflicted between KZ2 and ODST, because while i dont own a PS3, i traded my 360 for my friends 360 for a month just for KZ2 and i really enjoyed it. The best part was the cover system that let you take cover but stay in FPS unlike Quantum of Solace or RSv2, I really really wish all FPS' had that, playing others like ODST and MW2 it just feels wrong not to take cover. That said I went for ODST for the vote, because firefight is just the most fun ive had in multiplayer this year

Personally, I think Modern Warfare 2 is overrated. When I think of Game Of The Year I look at the package as a whole and MW2 didn't have the best package in my opinion. The campaign was short, full of plot holes, suffered from an identity crisis and had the dumbest ending I've seen in a long time. There was virtually no improvement in the engine from the first Modern Warfare ... not like the advancement we saw from Uncharted to Uncharted 2. It's Modern Warfare all over again which is fine but it didn't have the same effect it did the first time around for me. With all that said I still wouldn't say the game sucks or isn't a quality product ... I'd just say it's grossly overrated and undeserving of game of the year. I gave it best multiplayer shooter of the year but that was it. Also, it has nothing to do with being a snob it's just that the game didn't live up to the massive amounts of hype in my opinion. It was overhyped and underdelivered.

Eh, these lists have been Nintendo-free from the beginning (back in 05, they gave GotY to "Resident Evil 4 for the PlayStation 2 and only the PlayStation 2" or something like that

these are tailored square at what i call the "Red Ocean Casual" gamer, or the "fratcore" as the less elegant like to call them

never heard of Red Ocean, is that where people buy all the frayed visor hats, seashell necklaces, flip flops and polos? If so that's a pretty apt title, especially since no game emobdies that crowd for me like MW2 does.

Halo, Gears of War? There are many games that the so called "frat" gamers enjoy.

Hardly a grand conspiracy so much as it's that the Wii games aren't on the same level according to the voting panel. What Wii game got snubbed this year that you'd say belongs on the list? One could make the same argument about the PSP and even the PS2 since they are largely ignored. The truth is the Wii, PSP & PS2 aren't producing the type of game the "committe" thinks belong in the lists.

While I agree with a lot of people here saying I don't really like the VGA's much, I don't think some peoples hate is warranted. They do have product placement/commercialization, but where else can a man like Nolan North be recognized for his superior voice acting skills?

I think some of the developers really enjoy being there, and really appreciate the awards they receive. From that aspect, if winning these awards encourages said developers to keep making such excellent titles, I hope the VGA's lasts long term.

I really am not a Jack Black fan, and forgive me for saying I don't honestly think Brutal Legend would ever be enjoyable for me personally, but I appreciate that he is willing to go on TV and try to move our forum forward.

I always seem to watch it when its on, even though I really could care less.

I hope people don't forget about KillZone 2 and inFAMOUS, they both deserve some awards.

MW2 deserves less noms then that. Like, half of a nom. I'm glad Uncharted is leading though. I don't have it but I recognize a good game when i see it. Plus, it isn't MW2.

How come Halo: ODST wasn't included in the Best Cast category? They had 3 different actors from Firefly! That alone should be a default win!

How come the only recognition Wii games get was pretty much within the Wii category? Oh right, because your "target audience" are a bunch of beefcake retards who have no appreciation for games that push technological limits.

Also, I would much prefer a category for best multi console game of the year (such as Batman, Assassin's Creed, Modern Warfare 2) and then best exclusive game for each individual console. The Wii category has all Wii exclusives, and I believe the PS3 category has all exclusives, so that's the right idea, but the 360 category has some multi console games.

I think Unchartered 2 deserves GOTY and it WILL get that, almost across the board of ALL yearly gaming awards whether it's the VGAs, Joystiq's, or whoever elses yearly awards. It truly deserves it. Riveting....

...but so is MW2 yet the story is disjointed and it's not a very well held together game. I have yet to play online with it and I know that's it's bread and butter but I honestly can't see another same ole, same ole "online bread and butter" game winning GOTY. I think people thinking MW2 are not thinking of the game as a whole and are mostly dialed into how much fun they have playing online and the thrills of the short and disjointed story...although it IS a very thrilling ride.

No, the fact that the very first VGA opened up announcing Madden as GotY is why you should know not to take it seriously. That said, the category is "Best *Independent* Game Fueled by Dew," where "Fueled by Dew" is obviously just another way of saying that Mountain Dew is sponsoring that category. Although some company needing to throw Spike some extra cash for indie games to get recognition is reason enough to gripe on its own.

very superficial contests indeed since Dragon Age (Pc) is a much better candidate than Uncharted 2 ever will be.

I have both Uncharted 2 and MWII, and hands down Uncharted 2 is a better game. I have played through both and MWII is an amazing game but nothing I have played has came close to all the Uncharted 2 offers. It is almost like watching a movie it is so good!

How the hell is MW2 deserving. It's just another shooter with the same exact controls and gameplay
