Visit the bridge and destroy others in new Star Trek Online videos
After the break, find a quick trailer showcasing the ability for players to visit their ship's bridge. Thrill as you watch your avatar stand up and point at the view screen! Just try to keep it quiet when muttering the words, "Make it so." The video also touches on ground combat, visits alien landscapes and throws in some phasers and explosions for good measure. Enjoy.

It's starting to sound like the entire game revolves around combat instead of a mix between diplomacy, science, exploration and confrontations that exists in Star Trek.

Oh, the irony of me replying before I saw the first video, I had watched the second one instead.

Ughhhh... I love Star Trek and would kill for a very well made ST MMO but these videos have me worried.... Specifically the first video.
Talking about certain ships being better for "tanking" some for "dpsing" and some for "support". This is a sci fi ship space combat MMO not WoW.
I will still be trying this out, but lately it seems like the things I have been hearing have just made me not want to... the short beta, the focus on combat as opposed to exploration and diplomacy. The mediocre looking ship to ship combat... I am getting really worried.

ummm a star wars mmo where combat plays like rts? these are huge ships! what happened to the interface from Bridge Commander? where you were the captain? or could control the con or helm? switch to tactical? wouldnt that be better?
Robby1051 @ Nov 18th 2009 1:39AM
oops meant Star Trek! damn vodka...

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Starfleet about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making space exploration.
I tried to instill into the fleet culture “skepticism, pessimism, and fear” of the galactic economic downturn, adding, “We are very good at keeping people focused on exploding consoles on the bridge.”

Did I see the Guardian of Forever in the second video? Does that mean we'll be able to travel to different time periods?

They can't take on WoW so they are going after EVE...just as futile :)
ArcticFox @ Nov 18th 2009 4:48AM
Getting bored of these videos, the game is only 3 months away from retail if the Feb 2010 release date is to be believed, it really needs to enter open beta phase and quickly.
arcter @ Nov 18th 2009 6:30AM
Activate the Omega 13! No wait, wrong starship.
Chroma @ Nov 18th 2009 1:14PM
You mean the Omega Molecule. (ST:Voy)
arcter @ Nov 18th 2009 4:25PM
lol No, I meant Omega 13. (GQ)
Chroma @ Nov 18th 2009 6:25PM
No, I said Omega Molecule (ST: VOY). You don't seem to know your in a ST article, hint, hint, ugh.

As soon as the video starts the entire video area is covered by a fucking advertisement, making it impossible to see what's going on. Closing the ad with the tiny cross icon button doesn't remove it.
Go back to youtube, joystiq. At least their video player works properly.
Vcize @ Nov 18th 2009 11:16AM
Plus we can watch youtube on our phones, but not joystiq's player.

This gaming is actually starting to interest me more and more. However, I would still like to know more about how the actual multiplayer elements fit into all of this. I mean, from most of the vid docs that I have seen, it would almost appear as if this game was designed purely for solo adventuring or just random PvP space battles. How exactly does the party system work. It would seem that everyone gets their own ship, so are parties just fleets? Or can multiple players work together on one ship? If only they would just release the beta already....
Granger @ Nov 18th 2009 1:16PM
Completely off-topic, but what ever happened to that Firefly/Serenity MMO?
Joe Smith @ Nov 18th 2009 2:01PM
So far Cryptic has done nothing but bore me to tears with their games. They have great character creation tools (though the Champions one is full of really weird UI choices and limitations), but the games are a yawn. Given how lame Star Trek games tend to be anyway, I can't see this as a big exciting product. Hope I'm wrong, though.

I think this game is going to be awesome. Check out the latest video on IGN:
