Determining the origins of the huge chip on Joystiq's shoulder has proven difficult these last few years, but it's easy to suggest that it didn't come from a tall, cardboard tube. That's why we're not averse to posting unhinged Pringles commercials, least of all those that feature plenty of overt video game references. Head past the break and see if you can figure out where the various HUD elements and arbitrarily locked doors came from.
And then see if you can figure out where that Rubik's Cube came from.
Oh, good. Now instead of having objectification of women in video games, we also have objectification of women in video-game-inspired commercials. Ah, progress!
I would say that this appeals to the largest demographic of people playing video games.
Newsflash!
The majority of twenty-something males like hot chicks, brah! It's in our DNA, and no amount of preachy, "open-minded", granola whining is going to change that fact. It's science. Too much of our lives is devoted to changing what makes the most sense because of someone's emptional perspective. Embrace the animal within, it's who we really are.
It's okay because it makes "genetic sense"? "Embrace the animal within?" By that logic, we should all go out and rape some gals, because hey, all that matters from a Darwinian perspective is sowing our seeds!
Just because it's hip to dismiss feminism doesn't excuse you from doing critical thinking about your own arguments.
Wow. Straight to rape. I expected atleast a few more posts before that. Rape is about violence, not sex, and certainly not procreation. Try reading "To Build a Fire" and tell me who fared better there; the "logical" man, or the instictive dog.
I'm sorry, I should have provided all of the real life examples of when someone made a decision based on thier "gut feeling." Speak to anyone in a position of power, they will all say the same thing.
Furthermore, its not a position against feminism, per se, but instead, I pose this question...Why is the objectification of men completely acceptable? Because we don't care. It doesn't matter. "Oh, my six pack abs are going to make this movie sell more tickets? Well, okay, I guess." It's the godamn hipocrisy of the thing that is most unsettling. The movement is more about the immasculation of men than the empowerment of women.
1. Your right. I jumped the gun on the rape issue. Apologies.
2. I never said the objectification of men was acceptable. I'm not a fan of it. The issue at stake is that it's not nearly as much of an issue in gaming, i.e. we have way more well-rounded male characters than female characters. Additionally, men being the dominant binary are less damaged by unfair representation, though again, this does not justify it.
Seriously. That was my first thought. I'd tell him to wipe them off on his pants but apparently in the Pringles universe having to wipe anything off on your pants is a cardinal sin committed by those heretics who choose the "other" potato chip brands.
It always cheers me up when marketing departments/agencies actually manage to put forth some semblance of humor in their ads. 96% of what we see is "trying" to be funny and failing miserably. This actually made me laugh, at both the locked doors everywhere and the mysterious workings of a character's inventory.
