Capcom schools Monster Hunter Tri rookies, unsure about Wii Speak for US

Capcom held a university-themed event Tuesday evening in San Francisco to introduce newcomers to the Monster Hunter universe in the runup to next spring's North American release of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii. We'd already played the game at previous events, so we knew what to expect: Monster Hunter, looking nice (especially the large monsters) but not as nice as it could have on the PS3.
After spending some time with the three-level, English-localized trade show demo on-hand -- including a go using the very nice Classic Controller Pro, which is included in Japan's black system/game bundle -- we asked Capcom staff about two unsettled questions concerning the game's US release. The first was the matter of paying to play Monster Hunter Tri online, as the game eschews Nintendo's servers for Capcom-operated ones and is fee-based in Japan. We didn't receive a decisive answer, being told only that the publisher is "hoping" the game will be free to play in the US. We got a similar response when we wondered if Wii Speak support was 100% set for the domestic release -- Capcom's "hoping" to get it in, but couldn't promise anything.
The event did provide taste of what trying to coordinate a successful online monster hunt would be like without Wii Speak -- we found it nearly impossible to hear our fellow players (or the game) over the music being piped through the venue's formidable sound system.

Is it bad that I've never played a Monster Hunter game?
Suichimo @ Nov 19th 2009 6:18PM
Is it bad? No. The games aren't exactly a common sight in stores. Should you? Definitely.

agreed, I played Monster Hunter Freedom 2 to death on my PSP. Yet to try unite though, I'm waiting for the adhoc party thing to launch here.. Here's hoping to monster hunter on the PS3!

biggest dissapointement ever. a ps3 version would've been amazing!!! it would be like chinese oblivion.
SoshiKitai @ Nov 19th 2009 6:23PM
....Chinese Oblivion?
You don't fight humans in Monster Hunter... so it wouldn't be like Oblivion.
And last I checked, China didn't have THAT many monsters... so it wouldn't be China.
It would be more like... Monster Hunter for the PS3.
sony boy (6 years til sony man child!) @ Nov 19th 2009 6:44PM
oh yea...sorry, i meant japan. godzilla is there.

This is the kind of game where wiispeak or voice chat would be VERY IMPORTANT.
I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to use that device. Wiispeak isn't perfect but it's better than NOTHING.
That being said I am not a fan of this type of game, so I wouldn't buy it regardless
SoshiKitai @ Nov 19th 2009 6:24PM
Wii Speak is perfect for what it is!
...because I seriously can't find my microphone for my PS3 or for my 360...
...thank goodness Wii Speak is practically hotglued to my sensor bar or I'd lose it too!
Drewbob247 @ Nov 19th 2009 6:25PM
Why not? Wii Speak is a pretty godd peripheral for any online multiplayer Wii game...
Juwa @ Nov 19th 2009 6:19PM
Monster Hunter goes rawr.
Mr. Fister @ Nov 19th 2009 6:24PM
I don't care if the game supports WiiSpeak or not, I don't want to pay to play online, and if I have to, then I won't play online at all.
That being said, this game looks kickass, and is easily a day-one buy for me regardless. March can't come soon enough. :(
Chase-kun @ Nov 19th 2009 6:45PM
Monster Hunter Tri is the reason i got my Wii besides Brawl. This game will be awesome but i will not pay for online. if i have to, then i won't play online.
rikthagreat @ Nov 20th 2009 2:52AM
this game could either have mild success or fail badly
CoffeewithGames @ Nov 20th 2009 4:33AM
I think this game is going to be interesting for the Wii, and I hope that Capcom markets it well...
I agree, the way some Wii games have come and gone in the U.S., failure is an option, though I hope it's not the case if this game is reviewed well.
Mr. Fister @ Nov 20th 2009 12:16PM
It's already had massive success in Japan (almost a million units sold), and you can bet Capcom and Nintendo will market this game like crazy in the rest of the world.
rikthagreat @ Nov 21st 2009 5:53PM
whats "hip" in japan is not hip here
Nook @ Nov 20th 2009 11:51AM
I tried the demo on PSP a couple months back - my gripe with it was a bit related to the camera. For sure it seemed to have a higher learning curve.
I'm going to wait for the reviews, as it is right now - I'm considering this - pass on wii speak though, and online is hopefully going to be free. I have no intentions of payiing for a component of a game that ultimatley may not be my cup of tea. I hope the camera is better than what I found on the PSP demo.
but the thought of taking down big ass mean monsters is quite the draw. can I teabag them when they go down?
we need answers!!

The Wii camera was great with the classic controller set up, but more difficult with the Wiimote. The d-pad was the camera controls, and they are lacking in fine-tune adjustment. Also lacking was any sort of lock-on mechanics, making the guns more of a pain than necessary.
Dan @ Nov 23rd 2009 12:06AM
There was some weird chat system, but it was unwieldy and I didn't figure it out in the 3 demos we had. They had no comments on Wii Speak when I asked other than "unlikely".
