Free Champions Online expansion on Nov. 24, plus free-to-play Thanksgiving weekend
Once again, Cryptic Studios is giving you a great excuse not to spend time with friends and family over a holiday weekend. The developer's superheroic MMO, Champions Online, will be free-to-play from November 26–30 as a promotion for the game's second free content expansion since its launch in September.
The free update, which is titled Nemesis Confrontation and launches November 24, will include new costumes and perks, and tasks players with escaping from a hostile intergalactic prison -- a mission made much more difficult by the facility's unfriendly inhabitants, seen above. You'll also face off against the Shadow Destroyer (the party responsible for your hero's unrequested detention) and even your user-generated Nemesis. Sounds like a pretty dangerous calling -- but nowhere near as perilous as the crushing throng of Black Friday shoppers that awaits you at your local mall.

I think Champions would make a great story driven single player RPG in the vein of Mass Effect.

Seriously, does anyone have this game?

I have a friend who does. He likes it. MMOs aren't my bag, but it looks like really high quality stuff.
Filthy Assistant @ Nov 20th 2009 4:07AM
I had it years ago when it was called City of Heroes.
James @ Nov 20th 2009 11:16AM
I have it. It's a fun little diversion. It's so easy to drop in and out of. If I have a spare 30 minutes I can start up the game, complete a few missions, kill a few goons, and log off. And while I'm sure you can min-max Champions Online as much as any other MMO, my character feels powerful without having to resort to spreadsheets to make sure I'm optimizing my stats.

...your mother.
Thanks for reminding me to add that to my 'to do' list.

I think he is referring to that image.

Shut the hell up! The fracking contest is OVER!
Happy_man @ Nov 19th 2009 11:17PM
And yes, I finally read the rules in full, but thanks for your input, it put things into perspective.

Jesus, I don't comment for a few days and the place goes to hell.

Be so glad you missed today, Alton. It was bad.
Really bad.

Three of your comments have already been downvoted severely, Darth. Cut your losses.

I hope this free weekend actually worse this time. I was really excited when they announced it halloween weekend, but then everyone else was apparently just as excited as me and it took me until sunday to download the fucking game and get it patched, and even then i could never connect to servers : (
At least im a superhero already
Riley @ Nov 20th 2009 1:23AM
yeah mine took like a day and a half
unfortunately, i deleted it after the weekend was over, so now imma have to download it all over again :(
Filthy Assistant @ Nov 20th 2009 6:07AM
You're not a superhero, you don't have super powers. You are a true hero, though.
James @ Nov 20th 2009 11:18AM
For the first free weekend, I downloaded it the Wednesday before. You can't log in, but you should be able to download and patch the game at any time.
John M. @ Nov 19th 2009 11:55PM
I still have the client installed from the last free weekend. Should be a good diversion after defeating the tyrannical tryptophan beast of Thanksgiving.
Samael @ Nov 20th 2009 12:01AM
I am lifetime subscriber of Champs, but seriously guys, you guys have a dedicated MMO blog, Massively, leave it there. Also addition of one end-game Lair, does not equal to an expansion. This is not an expansion, just a much much much needed content injection, something that should have come with the game. It is disheartening to see it being called an expansion.
Did you guys call CoH's Issue 1-15 expansions or content upgrades? Did you call the Books of LoTRO expansions or content upgrades?
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] ATDFs Financier and Batman @ Nov 20th 2009 12:21AM
they brought it out of the mmo section to let everyone know about the free weekend. If it wasnt for that, then just this addition would have probably stayed there. But seriously, QQ, get used to synonyms
Filthy Assistant @ Nov 20th 2009 6:08AM
I wonder if you'll get reimbursed when it tanks in a year.
EthanReyes @ Nov 20th 2009 12:34AM
Awesome! :D
Preston @ Nov 20th 2009 2:23AM
Has Champions gotten better servers? Because after my experience during the LAST free weekend I really don't feel like spending 20 hours downloading the client and the patches just to have it hiccup mid installation.
Giroro @ Nov 20th 2009 5:20AM
What's going on in that image. Seriously. It's a bunch of guys in BDSM gear and a lizard in the fetal position. Are they trying to market to sick fetishists or something? I don't get it.
Super heroes are really the last thing to come to mind.
