PSA: PlayStation Video Service expands to Europe today

For a limited time, the PlayStation Store will be running a special promo. Anyone that purchases Angels and Demons from the newly launched service will get a free copy of The Da Vinci Code. New registrants of the PlayStation Network will also be able to get a free download of Transformers if they create an account before November 30.
"The launch of the PlayStation Network video delivery service extends our entertainment offering and provides consumers with another way to access their favorite movies, whether at home or on the go," SCEE's Andrew House wrote in a press release. SCEE's Jem Alexander also shared his enthusiasm with us, saying the service will be "amazing" and that "biscuits are brilliant."

Heh, I'll praise Sony the day when Xbox Live is free! I feel so stupid subscribing to it as it is. But, alas, since the release of SF IV, that game was the last game I've gotten for the 360.
mathieu; aka the jaws of death. @ Nov 19th 2009 6:16AM
no canada? =[
A1 @ Nov 19th 2009 6:37AM
Not sure if Canada's part of Europe, let me check.......nope wikipedia says its not. ;)
Blame Canada, blame Canada. :D
Guillaume @ Nov 19th 2009 10:47AM
Yup, looks like us Canadians are always left out in the cold ... :(
tobz1000 @ Nov 19th 2009 12:23PM
Each of France, UK, Germany and Spain have a bigger population than Canada; I imagine that's why they're priorities. Still, sucks for you guys =/
jack shiels @ Nov 19th 2009 6:28AM
They said Ireland would be getting it in the press release... seems like they changed their minds.
Roll on 2010.
chowley @ Nov 19th 2009 9:51AM
Ah for christ sake im so sick of Sony, what is it a localization delay? They going to dub every film in Irish ffs? So sick of this.
ben murray @ Nov 19th 2009 6:46AM
That's great news because 'The Da Vinci Code' was literally one of the worst films I have ever seen!
biggrapp @ Nov 19th 2009 7:05AM
since this is happening for them hopefully this means we'll be getting vidzone and soon.
Jenny Lee @ Nov 19th 2009 7:07AM
Canada is NEVER going to get movies! WTF??? I hate this! I hate how Canada is right on top of the USA but like, we don't get things at the same time as US! WTF!
Ashitaka @ Nov 19th 2009 7:36AM
Blame Canada's government, not Sony.
ryan @ Nov 19th 2009 10:01AM
actually yes blame Sony.. yes canada does have restrictions to make it harder but read this, xbox live is already offering video content to its canadian customers... so why is it microsoft is able to and not sony? simple sony is just being too lazy to actually put an effort into making their video service available in canada, so yes this is sonys fault for doing nothing about it
calgaryalta @ Nov 19th 2009 3:51PM
Seems like the only things the Canadian Government lets into the country easily from the United States are illegal firearms.
maroofh @ Nov 19th 2009 7:13AM
Yeah, I was surprised when they showed transformers 2 as downloadable in the UK ps3 tv advert. Which thank god are actually good. Microsoft and Sony are really battling on TV over here.
theMediaman @ Nov 19th 2009 7:17AM
Not only is Canada excluded from a video download service, but the Blu-ray copy of Godzilla that I bought with a Digital Copy for my PS3/PSP DOES NOT WORK. When I called Sony they said it was because I'm in Canada and cannot use the code.
Why would they put on the Canadian packaging a feature that is impossible to use in Canada? Isn't that class-action-worthy?
Ashitaka @ Nov 19th 2009 7:40AM
Your asking the wrong question.
Why would Canada block a feature that everyone else can use? Blame your government, not Sony.
Ashitaka @ Nov 19th 2009 7:40AM
You're.
And no, ffs, it's not class-action-worthy --'
Joxer @ Nov 19th 2009 8:52AM
Ashitaka is a moron. It's all about rights holders and who has the right for various levels of distribution in different territories. For instance, we can't use Hulu (which I agree is stupid), but maybe we can see the same content at say ctv.ca, which has the broadcast rights (purchased) for Canada.
The old models don't fit the internet age, but they persist. Until they come up with a new model and break from the past it will always be piecemeal like this. Sony just did the next deal with where the most bodies/subscribers were, and Canada is small potatoes by population. Even where we do have services like on iTunes and Xbox live, we get a smaller selection. It is rather amazing though that those two non-media companies have managed that much when Sony which has Sony pictures and who knows how many other related companies can't get it done. So I guess, yeah, blame Sony - more inept than their competition at their own game.
theMediaman @ Nov 19th 2009 9:02AM
Joxer FTW
...Ashitaka FTL :P
Ashitaka @ Nov 19th 2009 1:52PM
Yeah, I'm a moron for the lose, how nice of you... :)
Look, here in Portugal (Europe, just in case...) I don't have the PSN video store or Vidzone (although they are coming this way) and I blame that fact (delay) on Sony.
Canada, on the other hand, is a completely different issue. I don't know much about Canada, but from what I read here on the internet (Canadians are always complaining, they just won't shut up and realise that they're not the only ones who don't have access to the things they want) it seems that it is Canada's government that blocks and/or tries to block access to some content.
You mention Xbox Live, so what, PSN is there, isn't it? Microsoft hasn't even managed to get Netflix there, I guess that says SOMETHING. It's Canada's fault, it just makes it so hard to get content there that of course that the big companies don't even care or want the trouble just to please "small potatoes by population".
So yeah, fuck me and me for the lose, what the hell do I know, right? Keep blaming Sony and other companies, I bet that way you'll really get what you want.
brad450 @ Nov 19th 2009 4:06PM
@Ashitaka:
first of all the governing body of media in Canada (the CRTC) doesn't control media over the internet, its the people (or companies) that hold the rights to do so. and there isnt even NETFLIX in canada its a totally different company called ZIP.ca, sony needs to go the the people who own the rights and people who run services like ZIP.ca to get the same service here so yeah
cabeça dura
yeah I'm Portuguese and you should do some research before you comment on shit
Ashitaka @ Nov 19th 2009 4:20PM
The model applied in Canada is different than the one applied in the US or in other European countries so Canada's government is still the one to blame. Make it easy for companies to put content in your country and THEY WILL. Until then, whining and blaming those companies will get you nowhere.
E vai-te foder brad.
Xenon @ Jan 7th 2010 3:56PM
@Ashitaka
You live in Portugal? Isn't that the place no one likes to go in Europe? Ya, I thought so. Eastern Europe is more attractive than Portugal, ain't it?
cowboyd @ Nov 19th 2009 7:41AM
great news
feedDunk @ Nov 19th 2009 7:37AM
Welcome!
Mike @ Nov 19th 2009 8:01AM
So Assassin's Creed is pretty cool
Lookhappy @ Nov 19th 2009 8:24AM
Wicked! Been looking forward to video shizzle on my ps3!
MrXile @ Nov 19th 2009 10:17AM
Great, PS3 video rental/buying service. Ok... so why would I spend £11.99 on a film to own, which I can only use on my PS3 (and in some cases PSP)?
I would rather spend the extra £3-£4 and get the actual Bluray. Watch it whenever I want, on whatever I want (PC, PS3, Standalone player)
c-murph @ Nov 19th 2009 10:41AM
No Canada?!!!
Phizzy @ Nov 19th 2009 11:15AM
So I can sign up a new dummy account and download Transformers? Or is it for the first new account per console serial?
IanC @ Nov 19th 2009 11:20AM
Crap pricing.
Also getting a tad annoyed with the store appearing under multiple categories.
ngc628 @ Nov 19th 2009 11:24AM
Come on for frack's sake. People in Canada want a video store; we want to pay for movies and television.
This is not just Sony's fault; our moronic government tolerance of piracy (just a shade whiter than the Somalian's government) is a big part of this.
Jagged73 @ Nov 19th 2009 11:44AM
Maybe this will benifit Americans. Namely Americans living overseas....like US military. It sucks so hard to have a US address, US credit card, PS3 purchased in the US, but because my IP address is in Germany I cant buy movies or tv shows on my ps3. Games yes, movies no. Im willing to put up with the DRM and maintain a US address for my credit card if I could buy the movies and music I want the way I want...but alas...so far nothing. With the exchange rate I would be paying a bit more for the movies but I bet they are dubbed in the nations native language...not english. If so, that would still exclude a good number of us. Quick quiz: Where is the largest group of americans living not on the North American continent??? Answer...Germany....its several hundred thousand of us here.
The Swedish Chief @ Nov 19th 2009 12:08PM
I WANT AN OFFICIAL LAUNCH-DATE FOR SWEDEN!
....You can have meatballs if you give me information?
Jagged73 @ Nov 19th 2009 12:55PM
Just updated to 3.10 and tried to buy a movie..."This content cannot be accessed on your account." Atleast I know other ways of getting movies the way I want in so they play on my PS3.
Clever @ Nov 19th 2009 2:57PM
No Canada! Haha. Does not surprise me. I guess they just want us to just torrent everything... You could really argue that we can't use services like Hulu to watch streaming shows sooo we download them instead. We don't want to but don't have a choice. If its the governments fault or CRTC its ridiculous! its 2009 not 1999.
dimitris @ Nov 20th 2009 4:08AM
...for once more....no Greece.
thanks SONY !
it seems that torrents are the only way.
dimitris @ Nov 20th 2009 4:49AM
...oh i forgot !
I also thank MICROSOFT
...for keeping Greece out from the video service
