Not sad, just stupid.
PS2 has been available here since launch. It used to cost 1400 BRL (which is the price of the PS3 now), but since around 2006 you can find it modded to play backups for about 500 BRL, which is roughly 290 dollars...
I'm not really sure why Sony made this move, but it's dumb as fuck.
The only people left the own a PS2 here are NOT going to pay 800 BRL for a console that doesn't play backups, and the people who CAN pay will probably have already bought a Wii/PS3/360.

Thank you for ending this, Joystiq. It's been...terrible. Really.

The PS2 will never die, I swear.

for the record, my post up above was a reply to the original first post which was something like, "who stole my grape juice," or some shit and I was mocking him because it had to be a relevant post.

The 'stiq staff must have deleted his post as I was replying to it.

You don't need to import one, people have been selling PS2 here since launch, you can actually buy a new one for 440 BRL.

You can import, but there is a chance you will be taxed when it arrives.
60% of the original price, to be exact.

Same here. My controller broke long before I ever even saw a hint of a Disc Read Error. I mean, I've seen plenty of anime DVDs that wouldn't play properly, or would take a few tries to get to read, ut the original PS2s weren't all that great at recognizing DVDs anyways.

My controller on the other hand broke after falling 2-3 times from about 4 feet onto a carpeted surface... yeah. Lucky for me my PS3 controller, which sadly I have dropped quite a few times, still works like new. (Falling from about the same height and also falling onto carpet.)

Anyone want a PS2 controller where L1/L2 and the D-Pad don't work?

You need to be tough the be a gamer here in Brazil.
It's like, every single person in the world is out to get your money: The government with ridiculous taxes over video-games, companies charging ridiculous amounts over the games on top of those taxes, stores (since game prices are not fixed, each store can charge how much they want) charging even more on top of everything else and then the government again with more bloody taxes for importing eletronics to kill those who try to buy games on other countries. Stores were asking R$ 7999 (Around $5000 at the time) for a PS3, SERIOUSLY.

I can't express how GLAD I am that I'm leaving this place.

just for not making our country an evil empire
you could say that today is 1100BRL($640)
but games are still 200BRL($120 at the minimum)
but at least we´ll have a psstore until the end of next year O.O

Well when they said they wanted people to get a second job just to afford the PS3, looks like the Brazilian government took that a little too seriously.

sony din´t wanted to indroduce the ps2 cause of the
piracy and the high taxes, as it wants to release
ps3 officialy it started with the ps2, but sony
official stores allready started to show the ps3.
But all that will change is the official thing..
we have ps3 since with you guys.

Seriously, with this retarded marketing, they're counting that everyone here must be autistic at least.

Buying legit games here in Latin America sucks. Every console and game is overpriced, so it's no wonder the majority of gamers resort to copyright infringement.

Seriously, who's going to pay the equivalent of USD $500+ for an Xbox 360 and USD $80+ for a copy of ODST... with the average Latin American salary? Here in Mexico, the legal minimum wage is 54.8 pesos per day or about USD $4.20. Fiscally, it makes much more sense for me to buy a DVDR in the street for about USD $2.30.

I'm not saying people are entitled to lower prices simply because they want something. I'm just saying you can't condemn these people for finding a creative way to enjoy something they love.
