Sony finally launches PS2 in Brazil (or, welcome to 2000!)
We don't live in Brazil, but from what we hear, it's not one of the most gamer-friendly places out there. Piracy runs rampant and whenever any kind of controversial game releases, citizens usually find their government won't let 'em play it. But, hey, things are kinda looking up!
Reader Renato wrote in to us saying the PS2 has finally officially released in Brazil and that consumers can get it from the Sony Style store now ... for the low, low price of 799 BRL (about 461 USD). That's right, Brazilians no longer need secure safe passage for emigrating consoles or pay ridiculous sums of money to third-party distributors and can instead pay ridiculous sums of money directly to Sony for a locally-supported PS2! Isn't that awesome?
[Thanks, Renato]

Not sad, just stupid.
PS2 has been available here since launch. It used to cost 1400 BRL (which is the price of the PS3 now), but since around 2006 you can find it modded to play backups for about 500 BRL, which is roughly 290 dollars...
I'm not really sure why Sony made this move, but it's dumb as fuck.
The only people left the own a PS2 here are NOT going to pay 800 BRL for a console that doesn't play backups, and the people who CAN pay will probably have already bought a Wii/PS3/360.

Thank you for ending this, Joystiq. It's been...terrible. Really.
The PS2 will never die, I swear.
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 19th 2009 7:04PM
Yeah I'm glad it's over too. Thanks for bearing with us.

You had good intentions, but the people of the internet cannot handle this kind of thing.
iluvmyzune @ Nov 19th 2009 7:07PM
wow how retarded would you be to pay $461 for it. DAMN!

Wait wait wait. Someone is posting on a video game news blog comment thread about how another poster has no life? I .. but ... aren't.... *head asplode*
Trickob @ Nov 20th 2009 3:45AM
for the record, my post up above was a reply to the original first post which was something like, "who stole my grape juice," or some shit and I was mocking him because it had to be a relevant post.
The 'stiq staff must have deleted his post as I was replying to it.
Snapster88 @ Nov 19th 2009 7:03PM
Brazil will have epic gamings.
Jeff Smith @ Nov 19th 2009 7:04PM
I knew there was a catch to having that many awesomely shaped women in one country.
but really, why wouldn't they just import one for loads cheaper?
Sgt Zeppelin @ Nov 19th 2009 7:07PM
Some people don't want to got through the extra hassle...
Victor @ Nov 19th 2009 7:13PM
You don't need to import one, people have been selling PS2 here since launch, you can actually buy a new one for 440 BRL.
Jampirow @ Nov 19th 2009 7:14PM
You can import, but there is a chance you will be taxed when it arrives.
60% of the original price, to be exact.
Trickob @ Nov 19th 2009 7:06PM
do they get the slim or do they have to start with the phat brick and work their way up like the rest of us??
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 19th 2009 7:47PM
I like my Phat brick PS2...it's gone eight years without a DRE...
sonicspike41 @ Nov 19th 2009 8:27PM
Same here. My controller broke long before I ever even saw a hint of a Disc Read Error. I mean, I've seen plenty of anime DVDs that wouldn't play properly, or would take a few tries to get to read, ut the original PS2s weren't all that great at recognizing DVDs anyways.
My controller on the other hand broke after falling 2-3 times from about 4 feet onto a carpeted surface... yeah. Lucky for me my PS3 controller, which sadly I have dropped quite a few times, still works like new. (Falling from about the same height and also falling onto carpet.)
Anyone want a PS2 controller where L1/L2 and the D-Pad don't work?
RogerFH @ Nov 19th 2009 7:08PM
Deprimente.
Jampirow @ Nov 19th 2009 7:10PM
You need to be tough the be a gamer here in Brazil.
It's like, every single person in the world is out to get your money: The government with ridiculous taxes over video-games, companies charging ridiculous amounts over the games on top of those taxes, stores (since game prices are not fixed, each store can charge how much they want) charging even more on top of everything else and then the government again with more bloody taxes for importing eletronics to kill those who try to buy games on other countries. Stores were asking R$ 7999 (Around $5000 at the time) for a PS3, SERIOUSLY.
I can't express how GLAD I am that I'm leaving this place.
R2-D2-586 @ Nov 20th 2009 3:10AM
just for not making our country an evil empire
you could say that today is 1100BRL($640)
but games are still 200BRL($120 at the minimum)
but at least we´ll have a psstore until the end of next year O.O
Nick @ Nov 19th 2009 7:15PM
Off topic.
....wheres my prize Joystiq.... I won't stand for this.....
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 19th 2009 8:13PM

Misantropus @ Nov 20th 2009 5:03PM
Wrong. The BEST, not a decent one.
ThisEducation @ Nov 19th 2009 7:22PM

Did some comments get deleted here or something?
I'm out of the loop!
Ashitaka @ Nov 19th 2009 7:28PM
Yeah, me too. I don't understand what the eff is going on. People are talking about random comments and yet I barely see them. Would someone care to explain us? All I know is that the first off-topic post would earn a beta code.
Victor @ Nov 19th 2009 7:32PM
The first comment (the one from the dude who won the prize) got deleted along with one of the replies :P
Rhamsey @ Nov 19th 2009 7:23PM
Holy shit, 460 bucks for a ps2? Imagine how much a ps3 would cost there.
Trey @ Nov 19th 2009 7:25PM
Your first born child. And a public execution of a Nintendo Wii.
Ashitaka @ Nov 19th 2009 7:28PM
Jampirow said it up there. $5000 ffs xD
TreND @ Nov 19th 2009 7:30PM
i paid 800 for my ps3 .. im from argentina though, but both countries suffer the same
sonicspike41 @ Nov 19th 2009 7:48PM
Well when they said they wanted people to get a second job just to afford the PS3, looks like the Brazilian government took that a little too seriously.
jak33 @ Nov 19th 2009 11:47PM
i guess well know in about 6 years
R2-D2-586 @ Nov 20th 2009 3:17AM
about $640, well at least this is the price here today
but I think it ll get lower...
but plz guys on top don´t make Brazil so ridiculous...
sony din´t wanted to indroduce the ps2 cause of the
piracy and the high taxes, as it wants to release
ps3 officialy it started with the ps2, but sony
official stores allready started to show the ps3.
But all that will change is the official thing..
we have ps3 since with you guys.
rahmenxnoodles69 @ Nov 20th 2009 1:24AM
So.. is everyone in Brazil also watching Cast Away and listening to the Baha Men?
I didn't know Brazil was some magical world lost in the turn of the century.. lol
Erich Souza @ Nov 19th 2009 7:40PM
Just to see how stupid is Sony here in Brazil...
I just bought a second 360 here, an arcade one. Bought it for 700 BRL.
Seriously, with this retarded marketing, they're counting that everyone here must be autistic at least.
WAY TO GO SONY!!!!
SewerShark @ Nov 20th 2009 6:04AM
700 reais num arcade? Caraca, eu paguei 1500 no meu pro 60 giga.
fieldstodda @ Nov 19th 2009 7:43PM
just wow.
kyle brewer @ Nov 19th 2009 7:41PM
Buying legit games here in Latin America sucks. Every console and game is overpriced, so it's no wonder the majority of gamers resort to copyright infringement.
Seriously, who's going to pay the equivalent of USD $500+ for an Xbox 360 and USD $80+ for a copy of ODST... with the average Latin American salary? Here in Mexico, the legal minimum wage is 54.8 pesos per day or about USD $4.20. Fiscally, it makes much more sense for me to buy a DVDR in the street for about USD $2.30.
I'm not saying people are entitled to lower prices simply because they want something. I'm just saying you can't condemn these people for finding a creative way to enjoy something they love.
