A slide from Sony's Media & Investor Conference presentation today reveals plans for a "Sony Online Service" that features a single, convenient account for use with a variety of Sony devices. The slide shows plans for online services, built on the PSN infrastructure, for use with computers, TVs, phones, e-readers, and "New Mobile Products." The proposed system sounds more than doable, but something tells us we shouldn't hold our breath for expansive features. Cross-chat between devices? Not likely.
This unifying concept could be what Sir Howard Stringer was referring to
earlier this year when he made cryptic references to expanding PSN beyond PS3. Of course, the PS3's installed base is no longer the bottleneck it once was (thanks,
price drop!), but allowing more devices to download movies and other PSN content would naturally increase the potential for sales.

Grammar errror? I think you meant 'Install Base' not 'installed base' when you were talking about PSN in the middle of the second paragraph. What's up with all the spam on Joystiq, its becoming more and more retarded. Its like the casual Wii gamers have found joystiq.com or something.

Here, print this out and go read it on the can.

How about expanding it to PSP first!
Charliekrad @ Nov 19th 2009 3:19PM
exactly what i dont like bout MS is that they say what their planning to do but never put it in to action, live anywhere would of been pretty good but it looks doubtful now
bluetev @ Nov 19th 2009 3:23PM

I swear, we're attracting all sorts of crazies here lately.....
yyr @ Nov 19th 2009 4:34PM
Oh, come on...I can't be the only one who thought of "SOS" when I saw "Sony Online Service."
And the rest is just knowing your song lyrics. =)

I've seen that page before...you can see featured items and a small selection of the total content, but there's a lot missing and no way to browse the rest (that I can see, at least).

oops...please ignore preceding comment.
Now, reporting live from the scene, here is a midget in a bikini.
Bailers77 @ Nov 19th 2009 4:09PM
I'd just be happy if they made PSN something I could access from my computer. Really Sony? There's no way for me to spend money on your PSN games or access my friends list from ANYWHERE other than the XMB? Lame, and kind of stupid. XBox live is so much more accessable.
Tez @ Nov 19th 2009 4:14PM
Huh? You can access your friends list on the website..
PSN & XBL: StevenMichael @ Nov 19th 2009 4:22PM
Maybe you should sign in at PS3.com before trying to access your PSN account.
yyr @ Nov 19th 2009 4:44PM
@StevenMichael
So wait...can I browse the PS Store from my computer? I would really like to be able to do that.
The ability to browse Xbox LIVE Marketplace (and even buy items on it) from a computer is really convenient and I'm hoping that Sony will follow through with the same feature in the future, if they haven't already.

Isn't this just confirmation for Sony to integrate a universal system for all their products?
I like the one-ID deal. Can just use my PSN ID.

Jesus Christ I'm alone again
So what did you do those 3 days you were dead
'Cause this problems gonna last
More than the weekend
Bailers77 @ Nov 19th 2009 5:42PM
I know that I can view my friend list at playstation.com, but other than seeing what they are playing and comparing trophies, I can't interact. Typing messages through the PS3 keyboard is time consuming, so I can't send messages easily.
And being able to buy stuff online and have it in a que is so missing from playstation. Honestly, I'd spend more if I could so maybe its for the best. But having the option would be nice.

josiahtheg @ Nov 19th 2009 6:37PM
Make Computers & Laptops run Ad Hoc party and you will make alot of psp owners very happy. Thats all i ask for and a decent psn system in the psp since we can't even see our friends(or ad it to the next psp system hopefully psp2)
2nd Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) (Getting a DS :D) @ Nov 19th 2009 7:32PM
So can we expect the PSN to expand to Wii then?
