Sony doesn't "bugger" with the system....had the shitty as US dollar not weakend why the Yen gotten stronger the PS3 would have been Profitable THIS year....as was originally planed...

Blu-ray isn't profitable?? where are you getting that from? its been profitable for years....the prices of players are high for a reason...they are NOT sold at a loss....Sony never PROMISED that people would jump ship from DVD to BD...that would be dumb as fuck.....fact of the matter IS that BD has OUTPACED DVD in its first 3 years....and will continue to do so....will everyone jump to BD? no...that would be dumb to assume...but MILLION of people have seen the benefit of BD over DVD, and as soon as the prices on HDTVs, BD players and media drops MILLIONS MORE will see the value of Blu-ray...not that that matters as far as Sony is concerned because THEY DON'T OWN BLU-RAY

Sony's TV's over Vizio have WAAAAAAAAAAAY more features....sure you can argue whether or not said features are worth it.....and to Cletus & Bubba they probably aren't hell all the extra buttons might confuse them....and why do they need extra pixels or higher quality LEDs if they can't tell the difference due to never having their eyes checked when they need glasses....about the ONLY thing they go to Sharp for is the Panels...damn near EVERYONE goes to Sharp for those panels....while back in the CRT days is USE to be Phillips they went to...big deal....EVERYONE DOES IT....that "american car" you might drive has parts from China, South Korea, Canada, South Africa, and Germany....

as for SOE....uhhh Everquest & Planetside would like to say hello....as well as new MMOs like The Agency & DC Universe....are they doing HUGE Numbers like WoW? no...but not much is now is it?

Sony Ericsson? uhhh not exactly sure but doesn't Sony own just like 40% of that? if not that then its not like they own the ENTIRE thing...and as such it isn't hurting them nearly as much......Sony has their hands in SO many companies its ridiculous....

as for them all doing a Japanese ritual suicide....uhhh the Japanese no longer do that....if they did the heads of Square would have done it after making all those RPGs for the 360 leaving the PS3 in the dust KNOW that their Japanese audience would have bought more copies on the PS3 than the rest of the WORLD did on the 360....

@Elranzer,

Actually Nintendo does actually sell more than games, even though its all game related, Nintendo actually sells most of their toys and game related merchandice, that along with their licenced merchandice they actually make far more money than their game side profits. Nintendo is the oldest game manufacture involved in the consul industry and at over 100 years old I would think they would know how to turn a profit by now. That being said, even though they sell their stuff at a profit it doesn't mean it'll be a compleat profit, meaning make up for the cost of development, there is some suspition that Nintendo barely broke even on the Game Cube thanks to all the lack of popularity of the system.

@ Chris D.

Sony fanboy much?

First off... Sony does bugger the system, they mess with it and it costs them money to do so, then they leave the price high, the system starts to show a profit thanks to certain technology advances and what do they do? Slim it down and drop the price back to the red zone. Even their big titles are struggling to make it into the top 10 with first week sales topping out at around 1m units, vs 360 big titles breaking that marker almost every time. The PS3 started off as a good far too costly idea and has become a bad affordable money pit over the years.

Second... Blu-ray is heavily subsidized by BDA, which is headed by Sony, to keep the prices in line with what the market can handle. Movies discs are even worse, while DVD is marked down an average of $5-6 the first week and about $1-2 there after Blu-ray is marked down upwards to $10 the first week and $5 thereafter. Why? Because companies want to get the product off the shelf and to do so they are sacrificing the SRP suggested profit margin. And Sony has the largest stake in Blu-ray having funded over 50% of the development and promotion costs of the format, which goes as far back as 1999/2000.

Third... SOE is the least profitable of the MMO companies, that is one reason why they started the SonyStation program was to even out the profits over their entire division, because people were dropping the games due to lack of new content. I see you didn't defend Sony Games there.

Forth Ericsson probably would be profitable if it wasn't for the fashion in which Sony has caused them to become one of the least popular manufactures out there, Sony bought into them to get into the mobile communications market and then started making demands from day one.

Speaking of Sony losing control, Sony owns most of SquareEnix why are they ignoring Sony's opinion (FFXIII and potentially FFXIV if the Live disagreement can be worked out), because they see that the profit from other companies far outweighs Sony's preferences, As for the PS3 in Japan outselling other consuls worldwide, nice story. When is the work of fiction suppose to be published?

I can't say I know much about buisness and how everything works, and I'm sure that 99.9% of you know just as much as me. But what I do know is that Sony is one of the largest and most successful companies in the world.

It's safe to say they know what they're doing. So everybody, just calm down.

GM was a large and successful company, and now they are asking for government bailouts. Even the biggest companies are not bullet proof.

Ugh, you had to have a 2012 joke in there? Please, this is why so many people are so poor with critical thinking reading stuff like "scientific fact." There isn't anything there, its a bunch of losers grasping at straws, you make a joke about it, now some morons on this board are going to think because Joystiq said it... it must be true!

Stop the nonsense Joystiq!

More over...

Sony electronics in general, you know cameras, DVD/Blu-ray players, CD Players (They still make these?), mp3 players, and computers, all are manufacturing products which compeat on the same level as products which are cheaper and have better customer service associated with them.

Cameras - Cannon, Kodak, Fuji... almost any brand it a better by than Sony
DVD/Blu-ray Players - Philips/Magnavox, you're still buying from the source and its a better customer quality service than Sony, or Sharp
CD Players - GO DIGITAL COPY ALREADY its cheaper and you don't have to buy 10 tracks just to get 1 or 2 good songs.
MP3 Players - Apple or Microsoft, stores make a big differance and ZunePass is an exeptional deal.
Computers - VAIO??? How the hell do you say that again??? I owned a first gen VAIO and let me tell you it was a good computer, but for the same price I could have gotten a better computer from a company which isn't named Sony. HP, Dell, Toshiba, and ASUS all manufacture computers which are as good if not better than Sony's over priced PCs.

Sony Pictures Studio, they must be doing really well, they are dropping MGM due to $3b in losses, and their movies though they do well in theaters don't generally hold up over the long run and make their way onto the Home Entertainment market quicker than any other studio. As for Spider Man you must be a fanboy because unless they clean up their act a lot in SM4, SM5 isn't going to happen, 3 may have done well in theaters and gotten the fan boys to buy it up in droves on Blu-ray (which was being geven away with the purchase of PS3s) and DVD, the movie still sucked, where fans were going and seeing 1 and 2 multiple times most only went to 3 once. Now that Disney owns Marvel also all contracts are up for renegotiation, Disney may not be able to take away the contracts but they can pressure the companies into dropping them due to lack of profits.

Fanboy??

Spiderman 4 & 5 are being filmed together....much like the last 2 Matrix movies...

Disney own Marvel sure....but like you said they can't force anyone out of them....they just can choose to renew them when and if they please...at the same time Sony has had the Spider-man license for at LEAST 8 years...seriously doubt they would just cut them out like that....

I'll give you HP being better than Vaios but if you Think Dells & Toshibas are better than a Vaio you are smoking something....DELLS ARE SHIT

They may be planning to film them together, but from what I've been reading they are having a hard time getting past casting right now, and if they do film them together it would be proof that Sony has lost their touch with reality, filming movies together or back to back is a very ballsy move to do because if the first fails the second one might not even get released, at least in theaters, some movies can get away with it, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings for example, but those movies had a major fan base to feed them and they did it from the start Spider Man on the other hand has had 3 movies, each getting progressively worse, that takes some big brass tonkers there.

As for Disney's plans for Marvel all I know to say there is, Disney is no longer Disney. Back when they bought out Pixar the BoD of Pixar took over Disney for the most part and seeing who makes up the board now I suspect they are eyeballing all marvel properties for any weaknesses which could be taken advantage of, and don't go around defending the contract thinking Disney won't cut them off, because this same board, spear headed by John Lasseter did a massive attack on Disney direct DVD productions shutting down most of their movies at a loss just to clean up the quality of Disney owned features, the Tinker Bell movie was in the hole for over $100m and was given a complete revamp doubling the budget costs and giving a fully backed send-off release just to try to avoid the massive losses it would have taken from being canceled all together.

I work with computers and I can tell you Dell and Toshiba are just as good as Sony, HP, and ASUS, it comes down to what you want to pay, if you go out and buy a bottom rung computer from the company you're going to get junk... Sony doesn't have a bottom rung, which I say good for them for taking a stand there, but HP does... it’s called Compaq, I'm fairly certain ASUS also owns another company I have yet to identify it yet. Dell and Toshiba on the other hand don't own (technically) anyone else lower than them so their low end computers, which always will be junk, give the companies bad reputations, if you buy a Dell PC starting at around the prices you can expect a decent computer at, around $900US, the computers are fairly sturdy, I advise people not to buy any less than $750, and then be picky with the components involved. Dell owns AlienWare which are extremely costly yet reliable computers, basically Dell's version of the Viao, but again if you buy a Dell spec'ed out at around $1200 you'll get a fairly decent computer, Toshiba no longer manufactures PC Towers but their laptops become very stable at around $900, and any bellow $600 are junk, Toshiba use to manufacture 3 ranges of laptops with 3 different names, they still manufacture 3 of them, but the Satellite Laptops now comprise the low and middle range systems, the middle range systems are perfectly capable.

@Bradwart - "They're japanese...their concern is the BIG picture."

"[The PS3 is] hard to program for, and a lot of people see the negatives of it, but if you flip that around, it means the hardware has a lot more to offer ... We don’t provide the ‘easy to program for’ console that [developers] want, because ‘easy to program for’ means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?”

- Kazuo Hirai, President & CEO, SCEI, January 2009

Thinking BIG picture doesn't make you capable of making good business decisions.

heh... Kazuo asked "what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"

I'll tell you what you do the next 9 and a half years: You lose billions of dollars on a bad gamble for the first 5 years, then practically regurgitate the tech in the latter four and pass it off as a substantial upgrade to uninformed consumers and fanboys.

This supports my hypothesis that they'll hold off on releasing a new console until around then (though my prediction is PS4 2012, a year after both competitors). They want to try and optimize profit.

although its bad news that they expect to make a profit within a few years i think that its great that sony arnt always concerned about profit levels and making money. they could have easily not bothered integrating facebook, vidzone or any other free application and people still would have bought a ps3. also the blu ray player has heavily crippled sony's financial outlook and has no real benefits in regards to the visual image depicted on the t.v, they would have known this yet they still implemented a blu ray player into the ps3.

compared with microsoft i think that sony are a lot more concerned about their consumers. im not trying to start a flame war here but cmon £100/$170 for a 120gb hard drive is an absolute joke

Chris:

1. sony is loosing money, Period.

2. sony felt like it was gonna be profitable in '08 -however, the Mis-calculated.

3. sony "estimates" it will become profitable in '12.
