BBC asks: What happened to Second Life?
You don't see nearly the amount of coverage of Second Life (or as we call it in these parts, PlayStation Home's creepy, aggressively pornographic uncle) these days as you used to, and BBC did a little digging to find out why. Their discovery? Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but Second Life sucks. It's overly complicated to control, it's full of some truly horrific human beings, there are many better social networking hubs and (perhaps most importantly) companies that sunk a bunch of money into it rarely got their investments back.
What the BBC seems to be implying is that Second Life was largely a media-created phenomenon, with journalists and public figures so smitten by the idea of a virtual world, no one stopped to notice that it was a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Besides, everybody knows that HiPiHi is where it's at.

The body is nice... the head and tail are not.
HighFiveJesus @ Nov 21st 2009 12:19AM
No, i don't like to screw animals, not even animals in designer jeans and a six pack/ or double c's.
MystileArmor @ Nov 21st 2009 12:30AM
Who said anything about screwing?
HighFiveJesus @ Nov 21st 2009 12:41AM
well i presume we aren't getting turned on just because having a stiffy is so much fun to walk around with.

Psstt... I was being sarcastic
BigD145 @ Nov 21st 2009 1:58AM
Admittedly, these are some of the worst furry models I've seen from SL. There are far better ones out there.
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Nov 21st 2009 4:31AM
Finding better furries is a lot like winning an argument on the internet...
TachiFoxy @ Nov 21st 2009 8:09AM
One of the default characters on SL is actually a furry, so yeah.
And those can be purchased. I HAVE ONE MYSELF. RUN IN FEAR.
Blank-Mage (ATDFs Nuker) @ Nov 21st 2009 8:16AM
I'm not going to post NSFW links to deviantART, but I can assure you furries can be damn sexy. (When drawn by someone with talent, mind you.)
Blank-Mage (ATDFs Nuker) @ Nov 21st 2009 8:29AM
Actually, just Felicia from Darkstalkers. Comon, guys, you know you'd hit that.

LOL. : D
HighFiveJesus @ Nov 21st 2009 12:09PM
Ok see they take a reasonably sexy female form, chop off the head and replace it with a mouse and add a tail. HOW IS THAT SEXY
RKN (Steam ID: nerdydesi) @ Nov 21st 2009 12:59PM
That's why I like that furry art over all others, because it looks more humanized.
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 21st 2009 2:41PM
@Blank Mage:
Felicia is mostly human, with SOME cat parts. Not furry. If anything, she's a catgirl.
Furry indicates that a character has very strong animal-like appearance. Completely covered in fur (or feathers, scales, etc.).
Blank-Mage (ATDFs Nuker) @ Nov 21st 2009 2:58PM
Well, considering most furries are similar, but recolored, I fail to see the difference. Really, I'm just a fan of hot chicks, and furry artwork just seems to be of a higher quality overall.

Lars @ Nov 23rd 2009 10:57AM
Facebook isn't as fun to grief on. And it doesn't let you create anything you can imagine. I honestly felt Second Life was closer to Little Big Planet than PS Home.
IGLAW @ Nov 21st 2009 12:03AM
Furries why

They've yet to hear about 4chan
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 21st 2009 12:09AM
I've been to 4chan... and lived. It truly is the cesspool of the Internet.
And, I've been informed from a quite reliable source that you fancy the Pocket Monster known as Mudkip. Is that accurate?
Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 21st 2009 12:10AM
I fuckin' hate mudkips.

Thou art mad?
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 21st 2009 12:15AM
I don't plan to go to 4chan...Encyclopedia Dramatica is bad enough.
For my funnies, I stick with Uncyclopedia. At least they're funny without making it either about rape or related activities.
Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 21st 2009 12:17AM

HighFiveJesus @ Nov 21st 2009 12:21AM
what do you expect, 4chan is all pedophiles that justify their masturbation over that hairless underdeveloped child body because someone had to draw it first, therefore is completely OK. No problems with these people's heads..
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 21st 2009 12:47AM
4chan is mostly trolls trolling trolls. Any actual pedos are banned on sight (the moderators, what few there are, do not allow child porn on the site).
Jerk Face @ Nov 21st 2009 3:03AM
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
giantenemycrab @ Nov 21st 2009 4:10AM
Take that back, Traceur. mudkips are awesome.
HighFiveJesus @ Nov 21st 2009 12:02PM
When everyone is anonoymous you can't really ban pedos can you? Sure they delete the pictures (after sharing the links with everybody in private).
Also isn't 4chan the place that finds the concept of a bear (typical 4chan user) molesting children to be HILARIOUS? No pedos indeed. ITS OK!
One thing for sure, it is 100 percent weeaboo there. Sad sad stuff.
Blank-Mage (ATDFs Nuker) @ Nov 21st 2009 3:07PM
I remember seeing something about "Lolicons, Huzzah For Victimless Porn" or something. I loled at the time.

BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 21st 2009 12:07AM
I think the admirable thing about Second Life is how open-ended it is. You can, quite literally, do anything in it. You're able to upload your own textures, sounds, and animations to it, and it has its own scripting language.
But... that doesn't quite throw off how creepy some of the people are in it. I can't help but wonder if the people in that screenshot really are furries, or just trolls.
RogueJedi86 @ Nov 21st 2009 12:55AM
"You can, quite literally, do anything in it."
You can't attack people or engage in any sort of combat at all(like you can in all other MMOs). Be careful when you use the word "anything".
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 21st 2009 1:17AM
Well, Second Life isn't a game, it's a virtual world. It has no goals to achieve.
And from my understanding, there are actually areas in Second Life where you can, indeed, fight and even "die" (dunno how that works...).
BigD145 @ Nov 21st 2009 1:59AM
Yes, because people don't fight IRL.
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 21st 2009 2:10AM
Uhh... what? The off-topic contest ended the other day, dood.
Kia @ Nov 21st 2009 2:53AM
@ Rogue Jedi
Yes, actually you can. There are a number of combat systems both finished and more advanced ones in development at the moment. :)
Mr Khan @ Nov 21st 2009 12:09AM
I recall that Linden Labs got in a bit of hot water for inflating the numbers on Second Life and making it seem more significant than it was
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 21st 2009 12:10AM
Wow...I think I've seen better graphics on PS2 launch titles.
Mickey @ Nov 22nd 2009 5:03PM
Being a Second Life user myself, I can tell that that picture wasnt taken with the graphics settings set all the way on high, which is why they look a bit blocky.
Also they are made with the basic primative shapes that were avaliable at launch (2003), There have been many improvements made since then, with the introduction of 'sculpties' which let you make virtually any 3D shape you can think of.
You have to remeber that 99.9% of the things in SL are made by the public, and you have to make allowances that not everyone is a professional graphic artist.
Zorori @ Nov 21st 2009 12:29AM
Hey, let's choose the worst-looking furries we can! People will -definitely- hate SL after this! :V
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 21st 2009 12:33AM
You say that as if there's such a thing as a good-looking furry. :V
