BBC asks: What happened to Second Life?

The real reason SL has really lived this long is just mostly due to the fact that when they say "you can do anything!" they really mean YOU CAN DO ANYTHING. Build anything you want, script anything you want, and animate anything you want. True the interface is a bit clunky (and I'm not a huge fan of it) but I think it's a relatively small price to pay for a free virtual environment where I'm free to create just about anything I could imagine.

Though sadly it is true that having the ability to create anything means making good and bad things. But honestly the same can be said for the internet as a whole.

Also that screenshot doesn't do SL much justice these days really. It can look FAR better then that. But because almost everything in the world besides the land and some official areas are made by the people who interact with the world, no it doesn't look amazing. Some people in SL are REALLY talented though and produce models and textures that are pretty close to current-gen.

I got a second life whore once. It was like $4.

Second Life was fun, but creating stuff was really confusing. I lost interest quick. I don't understand why it hasn't been shut down by now. I guess there are a lot of guys who like pixel chicks controlled by other dudes.

Since they shut down the Matrix Online, where else are we supposed to get our cyber-punk rave fix?

Your sister site, Massively, has a hard on for Second Life. They post something about it almost daily. Might want to tell them it's irrelevant.

I played this game for an hour a couple of years ago. And in that hour i was ridiculed for improperly putting clothing on so it looked like i was wearing a box. So naturally i tried to pull it off like i was solid snake. The people that were hanging out in the quad or whatever decided to chase me around and somehow put a gian flashing neon sign above my head that said N00b. I definately needed a hug after that.

reguarding furries; I don't think there's actually anyting wrong with fur persey.. Because some of use change our appearance or try things we could never do in real life. The REALLY dumb thing with furries and sl is the idea of "yiffing". Thats not even mentioning the bizzare body changes people do there.

I think the main problem is technical, support and outages. We all curse the lindens when it happens and we HOPE for a fix, it breaks again.. We HOPE for a fix

But then:
We have copyrigtht issues. Linden tries to fix, tries to fix.. Wait, no they didn't they tried to make it harder and when linden received many TOS violations they allowed it to continue.

We scream at them for bug fixes and instead they add features on top of other broken features, ontop of more. Its any wonder why its still working because I'd doubt anybody currently working there worked on original coding.

With regards to SL:


It's ambitious. it promised so much, gave us wonderful tools, and told us to go crazy. so we did. and what came out of it is a wondrous,lively world.

if you look past the endless deserted shopping malls.

it's just that the implementation of it COMPLETELY SUCKS BALLS.

You wanna know why it takes like, 2 minutes to download an AV? cause it has to download about 200-2000 Primitive objects, plus the instructions to modify them usign an incredibly simple set of rules, and then download the texture maps for the object.
And this is BEFORE the thousand lines of SLScript to make the damn eyes blink.

Call me when they redo the entire system using Procedural Generation, then i'll play again.

Ugh, yet again another article that only looks at one tiny part of Second Life instead of all the amazing things people have created in world. That has got to be the ugliest picture I have seen from SL in a long time. Gone are the days people see SL for the creative outlet it really is, and only notice the furries (and really, not all of them are bad. I see many "cute" ones that are not there for any sexual purpose), goreans, and adult content. Many of us just stay away from the adult content and other ahem, odd things you can find around the grid. And even so, SL is so open you really CAN do anything. People can roleplay however they wish. But to me it's more fun to explore the user created and owned sims or admire the work people have put into creating their own scripted roleplaying or shooting games. And I highly enjoy drawing in photoshop and selling my work in world, running my business like I have been for years. Second Life deserted? Not from my view.

I'd like to take a moment here to ask

WHY, JUSTIN?! YOU KNEW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU USED THAT PICTURE! NOW LOOK WHAT YOU'VE WROUGHT!

Second Life was NEVER a hit, it was pure HYPE.

Mostly, the link that have been posted here to "promote" furries, are
pinups, "designed" in a way to arouse, entice ! Pinups, in my books,
are to be classified as "object", because of their sole purpose !
Nothing else is there but to be attractive, let it be man, women, or
nice stainless steel Refrigerators, it can be anything, but it must
be attractive !

It sound sexist, but it isn't ! Trust me, you'll need to, if you want
to go through what's to come...

To begin with, I can't get interested about a different way of life
with only ONE image and i don't expect anyone else to be...
It's the same as if i was trying to promote pure eating pleasure by
posting the picture of a bowl of caviar ; If you're not interested in
eating fish egg, even a bowl of Almas Beluga won't get you enticed
about it !

It's 24k gold container and 25 000$/Kg price tag might though...
because pretty much everyone CAN relate to monetary value, we all
live it ! (I Bet you googled this one ; Almas Beluga)
The way we relate to thing is mostly by comparison ; Things we've
felt before against similar thing we might feel (a car against
another car, quantity for price, etc..).

Same thing with arousal. By definition, sexual arousal is the arousal
of sexual desires in preparation for sexual behavior. The word we want
here is PREPARATION ; You know what's going to happen ! You remember
how it feels, as you've probably felt it before. You can relate !

What must be asked is ; To what, those who likes furry artwork,
relate to ?
It can be a personality trait, the souvenir of anything but it's not
present in those who don't "get" it ! Sometimes it's as simple as
Rock and Rap ; Personal tastes !

Relating is half the job done ! You see the pinup, your brain works
his magic, plays the "relation" game with whatever "furry" is tied
to, and there you are !

Or,

You see the pinups, you have nothing to relate to, your brain doesn't
even try to bother ; One picture haven't got nearly enough substance
to create anything from scratch you could relate to, and no magic is
done ; You don't care !

Then, there are others...who react with disgust and criticize, with
destructive opinions. Righteous twats i like to call them !
Amazingly, their reactions is very easy to understand ! It's pretty
much the same for every conflict between humans...

REJECTION !!!

For the basic instincts in all of us, someone not "embracing" your
truth, is rejecting you ! It's as simple as that ! Our basic
instincts are.. well, basic ! We learn to counter them to become
socially functional ! Haters, are different, because they don't
relate, they are not interested in anyway in this art, which is fine
! They probably wouldn't make any fuss if it weren't those that are
really into it, and proudly showing it !

This creates a difference of opinion and might even attack then in
their sexuality or on another personal level, if unstable about it.
Instead of filing theses differences of tastes under "Personal
Choice" and accept that, neither side is wrong, they decide that only
one shall achieve rightfulness !

They let their basic instincts take control ! And since the best form
of defense is attack, they engage a war...

Imagine conquered territory ; Someone who thinks like you, is an ally
to convert even more people into thinking like you, and in conquering,
what can't be conquered, must be vanquished !
(Hello 15th century religious crusades !).

Don't think that they are the only culprits though, as those who
responds to these acts, are just as guilty.

Solution ? There is none.
As long as there will be conquerers, you'll need defenders, we all
are, sometime, Righteous twats ; There are things worth fighting for
!

The only thing you can do is wisely choose your fights.

Looks like the media finally stopped getting kickbacks from Second Life.
