Andrew, was that your own PS3 on which you demo'd the Netflix application? I noticed a box for the Big Buck Hunter Pro light gun toy behind it. If that's yours (or at least owned by someone you know), do you think you could do a review on it here (review the toy, not the box, please)? I'm curious if it's worth the asking price.

It's very good that Sony got this one out. Holding the power button instead of using the switch on the back could save your laser from death, at least with some of the older phat models.

Just in case you or any others didn't know, you can just hold your finger over the power button (not switch) for a few seconds, and the PS3 will shut down. In case anyone is afraid to flip the switch, they can just use the method I listed, although I'm guessing you using the switch on the back of the console didn't hurt your PS3 anyway. Still, better to be safe than sorry.

Just in case you didn't know, the big picture up there at the top of the article already points out that PS3 informs you to turn it off by holding the power button for a few seconds.

You should try pressing the power button in the front for a few seconds.
It'll give a single beep, then wait a few seconds, after that it'll beep like 3 times and shut down.

I advise, you really shouldn't shut it off using the rear power button.
Its like shutting off a PC by un-pluging the electric cable.
Ya now that sometimes that gives you the blue screen.
The PS3 might do the same. So becareful.

After owning my PS3 for about 2 years this article reminded me that there even was a switch on the back. I've literally never used it except to power it on the first time.

I actually sent an error report to Sony last night through this feature. My PS3 completely froze when I went to the XMB while playing Critter Crunch, I let it sit for a few minutes then I turned it off. I turned it back on and a Screen came up saying I should send the error report to Sony. Pretty nifty feature.

After 3.10, I was surfing the web via the PS3 browser and it freaking froze on me! =( I shut down the system and then it sat there loading FOREVER as I turned it back on. I really thought my launch 60gb had YLOD, but then this prompt came up and I thought, okay...genus. I was pissed about the freeze but this sort of thing should help prevent more YLOD problems in the future, which means I can sleep at night knowing my launch 60gb might just survive the launch YLOD curse. Good update Sony.

Are you serious? That could cause hard disk corruption and various other errors. That's why it takes a few seconds for it to shut down properly.

Well, they don't include an owners manual for nothing...

Would you just jerk the cord out of a computer? That's the same thing.

Be safe. Either hold down the button until it beeps, and starts to shut down, or power it down from the menus (hint: Hold the PS button on your controller, then select 'Turn off the system')

Turning it off the front way, tells the software to shut down, so it can tell games to hurry up and save.

Turning it off the back way, cuts the power to the system. So it's not a danger if it's not saving anything, but you can never be 10000% certain it's not accessing the HD in any way.

You know...I don't think my PS3 has ever frozen on me, with a little under a year of ownership.

Of course, my 360 only started freezing right before it died, but hasn't since, so I guess it's normal.

Unlike some SNES's, where you touched the cartridge, then it froze AND erased your saves...

Hey I wonder if my PS3 will report that 3.0 bricked my Blu-Ray drive. When the lawsuits start hitting Sony they will have to disclose all of the data on systems that reported getting screwed up right after a FW update. Sony, you just screwed yourself.

Actually, this will help them.

If Sony has proof you abused your system (lots of improper shut-downs, etc) they could probably either void your warranty or blame you for the fault. Apple's does the same thing with the water sensor in the iPod and iPhone. Even if water wasn't at fault, if the sensor shows it came into contact with moisture they void your warranty.

The more you know. *plays chiming tune*

your drives not bricked there was just an error in the files you downloaded if You format your HD and reinstall the update or just wait till the next update comes out it will be fixed. It's not sonys fault its your ISP's or it could have been PSN too in which case it would have been kinda sonys fault. I always update via PC just to be safe.

@Darkfocus:

I'd still call that Sony's issue, not an ISP issue. If it doesn't validate the file before install, it's Sony's fault.

You mean you guys had to TRY to freeze your ps3? Mine froze 3-4 times that night. 3 times on the browser and once on the psn profiles. Also, the error report messages will only show if you are signed into PSN when the console froze.
