If you've ever read a story we've written where some organization touts a piece of research "proving" the overwhelmingly negative effects video games have on youngsters, you've probably heard about the National Institute on Media and the Family. They're infamous for issuing typically low-scoring report cards to the ESRB and other entities in the gaming industry, and for propagating the values of the group's founder, psychologist David Walsh. However, it seems NIMF has executed its final evaluation -- according to the St. Paul-based Star Tribune, the organization will shutter its doors on Dec. 31.
We bet some of you are overjoyed that the immeasurably critical group is shutting down -- however, without their constant panning, we expect violence in video games to grow unchecked within the next few months. Soon, every title, from Peggle to Viva Piñata, will be bogged down by excessive amounts of gore. All games will be federally required to contain guns. Titles from previous console generations which don't adhere to this rule will be destroyed, Fahrenheit 451 style. The industry will crash like a sack of lead bricks -- all because NIMF wasn't there to keep it in line.
To quote Joni Mitchell, "Don't it always seem to go/ That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone."

Yeah maybe they shouldve focused on parents who let their children play games designed for adults, rather that going after developers.

Legendary, what a legendary comment. I'm so tired of people blaming videogames for things that kids shouldn't be playing in the first place. Ok, maybe there are the few high school or college students out there sitting outside elementary playgrounds and middleschool places looking for kids who want to buy videogames (which sounds as bad as it is), but I think the way that most of these kids get these things is through their parents. I know it's tough for parents to spend time with their kids with times being so hard, but don't supplement that time with MW2, that'll just mess your kid up.

Its not in style to push social responsibility on people. It isnt sexy, you may be telling them what to do and perhaps...dare I say it...judging them. More parents these days would rather be 'cool' than be the bad guy. Sadly its that kind of discipline that people need to become grounded adults.

This is upsetting. I spent three years on a research paper on why the National Institute on Media and the Family should be shut down. I was on schedule to send it to my publisher in January 2010. Three years down the toilet.

I'm gonna make a first person shooter where you win by shooting a gamer in the face after he says video games have no effect on people being violent.

I doubt this institute did much impact. For example, I've never heard of the National Institute on Media and the Family. Merits for trying, but biased research truly gets you nowhere.

Agreed. However, the way that gamers act (see the jubilation in writing this article) sometimes doesn't help our image either.
