Speaking to VentureBeat, Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten discussed the recent round of Xbox Live bans. According to Whitten, banning users from Xbox Live is "a cat and mouse game." Said Whitten, "These were people that were pirating software." He added that Microsoft looks at banning users "from a safety and anti-cheating perspective" and that the company looks out for its partners. Responding to the widely reported story that Microsoft banned over a million Xbox Live users, Whitten said that the figure is inaccurate. "I cannot explain to you why people would think it was a million people," said Whitten, then adding quite succinctly, "It wasn't a million people."
Whitten went on to state his belief that Microsoft does "a really good job" of monitoring the activity on Xbox Live, specifically in terms of piracy and online harassment. He concluded that the company is "committed to making [Xbox Live] better and better."
The interview also covers the recent integration of Facebook on Xbox, the effect Modern Warfare 2 had on Live activity (hint: a big one) and whether or not we'll be playing Facebook games on our consoles anytime soon. Don't expect a straight answer on that last one though, as the closes Whitten gets is, "In the future, they will move much closer together."

This is not a big deal. No XBL. Oh Man. No rants from racist kids hopped up on caffeine and sugar. No messed up party chat systems, cheaters and network manipulators ruining the flow of games.
Now, one can just play any burned game they want at any time, without worry of the consequences. Burn the hot stuff game of the week, see if its good.
If you want, buy a new real XBox console and swap your hdd, oh man, you're online with the real game you previewed and then decided to buy for the multiplayer aspects of the game. And look, your achievements and progress came too...
Yeah, XBox and Wii piracy are rampant.
PS3 piracy is easy but annoying.

Joystiq needs to work on making their headlines clear. "Whitten: Xbox Live ACCOUNT banning ' a cat and mouse game' " would've been much more appropriate and effective...
I was wondering why they would ban a game involving a cat and mouse.
This isn't the first time a headline has lent itself to misinterpretation.

Well, good for Microsoft for standing their ground. I don't like Microsoft anyway, and I hate the 360. But, the gaming world cannot thrive and advance through piracy, and gamers are certainly unable to enjoy the game if someones cheating. At least Microsoft's doing at least one thing right. Microsoft should never bow to piracy or cheating. Only the PlayStation 3.

it's pretty straight forward. if you are going to pirate games or mod your box, don't go on live. I can't speak for Microsofts ability to handle piracy but I must have missed something because I haven't noticed much of a dip in online harassment...
