Report: Mario Kart, Pilotwings and Smash Bros. coming to Virtual Console by year's end
Gamespot is reporting that Nintendo revealed to them that a few oft-requested classic titles will be added to the Virtual Console within the coming weeks. According to the report, the festivities will kick off this coming Monday, when Super Mario Kart (which has been available in Japan for approximately forever) will be added to the storefront for the standard price of 800 Wii Points ($8).
Later in the holiday season, Nintendo will also reportedly drop the original Pilotwings onto the platform, then shortly after that, will also toss Super Smash Bros. into the mix. No prices have been announced for these two titles, but according to the Gamespot article, both will be released by the end of the year. That's just great. It's not like we're already drowning in huge, time-draining blockbusters. Now we've got to start perfecting our drifting and shell-flinging once again. We appreciate the gesture, Nintendo -- but your timing is rotten.

I think I just died of severe awesomeness exposure.
Brysonial the Bison @ Nov 21st 2009 4:43PM
This is really cool that nintendo's starting to release some things we have wanted for a long time but when is earthbound coming out?
Alton Brown (Now With Mystic Eyes of Death Perception!) @ Nov 21st 2009 4:47PM
Probably never. It's stuck in a legal debate over pop culture references.
Rob S. @ Nov 21st 2009 5:00PM
Also Reggie seems to be against it coming here for some reason, at least that's what I heard.
Obie @ Nov 21st 2009 6:18PM
ABOUT EFFING TIME! Now gimme Star Fox for the SNES and my collection will be complete! :D

Excellent find, nullset.
Filthy Assistant @ Nov 22nd 2009 2:56PM
No, this is survivable. If it was Pilotwings 64, however, you'd be dead.
Mr. Fister @ Nov 21st 2009 4:35PM
Pilot Wings and Smash Bros.? Guess I better pick up a new points card soon.
And I already have the SNES copy for Super Mario Kart, but that's cool too.
Aurelius @ Nov 21st 2009 4:40PM
Still waiting on Earthbound. I've had 1000 points just sitting there for the past year.
ZaxCG2 @ Nov 21st 2009 11:34PM
Well it's good to see that there's people out there like you with a glint of hope left in them...
But I for one have those dormant points sitting there for Cave Story. Which... is BOUND to come out... SOON.
False @ Nov 21st 2009 4:36PM
Don't need to go backwards now that I own SSBB and Mario Kart Wii. But my eyes popped out of my sockets when I saw Pilotwings coming up. Can't wait for that one!
Alton Brown (Now With Mystic Eyes of Death Perception!) @ Nov 21st 2009 4:38PM
I still want Bayou Billy.
Alton Brown (Now With Mystic Eyes of Death Perception!) @ Nov 21st 2009 5:35PM
Also, we need Faxandu.
Markez @ Nov 21st 2009 6:13PM
I want Ducktales for VC, and M.U.L.E. for Wiiware with online.
*drools

YES

What about Rescue Rangers or Little Nemo: Dream Master?
Alton Brown (Now With Mystic Eyes of Death Perception!) @ Nov 21st 2009 6:32PM
Little Nemo was awesome up until the part where you got a weapon and had to fight a bunch of shitty bosses.
CheeziePotato @ Nov 21st 2009 9:26PM
I want Castlevania Bloodlines.
CheeziePotato @ Nov 21st 2009 9:27PM
and Yoshi's Island.

Every time that I've been about to give up on the Virtual Console, Nintendo smacks me upside the head with a baseball bat made of awesome.
[Tre is spelled with no Y] [blogs at trespeak.tumblr.com] @ Nov 21st 2009 5:25PM
The hits don't hurt as much if you accept the fact that VC can't ever be given up on (until the Wii 2 comes out and VC "Reloaded" or whatever comes with it)
Granger @ Nov 21st 2009 5:29PM
If Nintendo's next console isn't backwards compatible with VC games, I'll just be really, really angry.
Grrr.
Ryan Hamilton @ Nov 21st 2009 5:00PM
Sweet now I can pay for games the world has been playing with emulation for years.
Travis @ Nov 21st 2009 6:29PM
for serious
Freestyle Farfetchd @ Nov 22nd 2009 2:46PM
@ryan
Amen. The VC sucks.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 21st 2009 5:10PM
I don't see why anyone would get mario kart or smash bros if they have the wii versions, as it's basically the same game. Good to see pilotwings though.
ChuckBartowski (ATDF Technical Consultant) @ Nov 21st 2009 5:12PM
.......theres a big difference.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 21st 2009 5:13PM
There's really not. In fact, there's actually less stuff in the older ones.
Sage009 @ Nov 21st 2009 5:31PM
Stop being such a troll.
This is one of those times where "Less is more"
Granger @ Nov 21st 2009 5:33PM
Less is more. Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 blow MK Wii out of the water. Super Mario Kart has arguably the best track design in kart racing game history (and the only Rainbow Road worth a damn). MK Wii adds a lot to the design, and takes a lot away in the process (much like DS and DD!! before it). Online play is hardly enough to want to put up with all of its drawbacks, especially when MK was a staple in any split-screen gamers library.
Double Dash!! still wins just for having wicked fun co-op though, even if the track design was abysmal.
KaBob799 @ Nov 21st 2009 5:35PM
Super Smash has some awesome levels that they never bothered putting in the new games. The fight for the saffron city helicopter pad will never end!
Brysonial the Bison @ Nov 21st 2009 7:08PM
@sage009
We aren't talking about toilet paper right now!
Roto13 @ Nov 22nd 2009 1:21PM
Tmac spreading the stupidity and ignorance again. You´ve obviously never actually played these games if you actually think Brawl and Mario Kart Wii are that much like their original prequels. Especially Mario Kart. What the hell kind of idiot do you have to be to think they´re even comparable experiences?
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 22nd 2009 1:28PM
The same kind of idiot who thinks they're not the same games.
Atlantis1982 @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:04PM
I hate to admit, but tmac is right. I find the idea of playing out of date games from the ones with more things with barely any differences in gameplay just down right retarded.
Granger @ Nov 23rd 2009 2:12AM
There are two types of people in this thread. People who buy games with the intention of keeping them forever and ever and ever, and people who buy games with the expectation of trading them in whenever the sequel or next big game comes out. You can figure out who's who, I'm sure.
Seriously though, how many people still play Third Strike, II Turbo, or Alpha 3 even though SFIV is out and awesome? And why is it the fanboys replay Final Fantasy VI and/or VII every year even though there are 13 main games in the series now? Did everyone stop playing Super Mario Bros. when SMB3 came out, or SMB3 when Super Mario World came out? Of the 947 Mega Man games out there, why is it that everyone goes back to play II, III, and X?
These games all share common elements (within their series), but more than annual sports game franchise X, they all overhaul (and remove) specific elements each iteration that make them all worth playing despite new entries being pumped out.
I like how you are arguing as if there is a correct view on the matter, and yours is it. It all comes down to the individual buddy.
Haon @ Nov 21st 2009 5:11PM
Love those games but its about 2 years too late. Missed opportunities.
Fuzunga @ Nov 21st 2009 5:19PM
Now I can have all three Smash games on one console! Life is good.

Lucky.

Mr Khan @ Nov 21st 2009 5:32PM
Might be willing to give Pilotwings a try. Never have before.
Alton Brown (Now With Mystic Eyes of Death Perception!) @ Nov 21st 2009 5:34PM
It's pretty fun. It hasn't aged as well as a lot of SNES games, but as long as you're in a retro mindset, you'll have a ball.
religiousjedi (is on LIVE as religiousjedi21) @ Nov 22nd 2009 2:18AM
*GASP!!!!!!!!!*
Khan, you're a disgrace to Nintendo!!!! Get the f**k out of here, NOW!!!!!!!!!
mike smith @ Nov 21st 2009 5:34PM
About....fucken....time.
Tomsta666 @ Nov 21st 2009 5:36PM
Errrrm, Ive had Super Smash Bros on VC for ages
CheeziePotato @ Nov 21st 2009 5:41PM
Damn, you Europeans!
*shakes fist*
Granger @ Nov 21st 2009 5:37PM
Is Pilot Wings 64 already on VC? I'd love to play them both again.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 21st 2009 5:59PM
I'll stick with SMK on the SNES. As much as I love rebuying titles, one copy is enough.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) (XBL: reo6) (Waiting for NMH2) @ Nov 21st 2009 6:02PM
Let me guess, you prefer physical copies over digital ones?
Courtney @ Nov 21st 2009 6:02PM
I wonder if Pilotwings holds up well, I haven't played it since back in the SNES days. I'm all for retro gaming, but that just seems like one that will have lost a lot of its luster over the years.
