Japanese hardware sales, Nov. 9 - Nov. 15: New direction edition

We know better than to stand in the way of progress -- so, from henceforth, Joystiq will be changing its focus from video games to the foot-centric sport which half of our posts tend to be about anyways. Yes, we know very, very little about the game, but we don't really think that's too important. You know what is important? Choosing a new name of our blog, which we've already done: Joykick. Or, in sticking with our current typographically-challenged theme: Joyqick. Yeah, that's solid gold.
We know this transition will be extremely difficult, but as you probably already know, we've always had a knack for achieving our lofty GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLS! (See? It's already started.)

Shit, I meant-
I mean 50%?
johnnynumber5 @ Nov 23rd 2009 12:08AM
lol ... well I guess it has indeed made the regular PSP look all that much better.
Victor @ Nov 23rd 2009 1:12AM
The only purpose of the PSP Go is to lower the price of the PSP, thus making its sales number soar!
Stevetrop @ Nov 23rd 2009 1:00PM
@victor well then by that logic the psp go itself is a victor in its purpose
Zexion_VI @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:06PM
lol... Japan is so weird. With a title like that... or an obsession with a soccer game...
Judd @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:50PM
Yea...imagine a company being obsessed with a football video game. Crazy right?
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Nov 23rd 2009 12:35AM
I guess I could imagine a company being obsessed with a football game if they made it. Otherwise, no, I can't imagine it.
DangerMouse @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:06PM
So it looks like the PSP Go is in direct competition with the DS Lite now.
eNrique @ Nov 23rd 2009 1:35AM
Don't you mean, the DSi?
Shadowfax (PSN: u2fan4894) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:06PM
Ha! A double meaning! You sir, have earned a feel good high five!
Shadowfax (PSN: u2fan4894) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:07PM
Was supposed to be @ Sly
Sly @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:44PM
haha i didn't even notice that. wow.
Jacksons @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:07PM
It looks like I'm not the only completely confused why anyone would buy a Go over a 3000...
rohan @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:13PM
because it is small and Japanese people like things that are small.......
that is it i am not taking that sentence any further.
RKN (Steam ID: nerdydesi) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:54PM
The Japanese sure do love their tiny laptops, they've had "netbook" sized laptops for years now and paid a premium for them. They are a very small niche here. People were shocked that I paid $1500 for my Vaio TZ, Americans want value, bang for the buck in their computers. Japanese want style.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) (XBL: reo6) (Waiting for NMH2) @ Nov 23rd 2009 10:09AM
What did he say?
ZetoSanNi @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:20PM
^ "I can haz cheezeburger?"
RKN (Steam ID: nerdydesi) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:11PM
Does Sony not enjoy success? You create the PS3 Slim, do a price drop and give the system a big boost but then you have to counter it with the fuck-up of the PSP GO.
rusty123 (PSN) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:39PM
PSP Go is pretty much one of the DUMBEST moves on Sony's part, aside from the $600 PS3 launch, but one must argue the ingeniousness of Sony's thinking. They're either COMPLETELY retarded, or COMPLETELY genius with regards to figuring out a way to spur PSP sales overall.
Cheesus Crust @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:17PM
While it was dumb from gaming console standpoint, as a machine, and what it could do, it was VERY much worth the $600.
atrimus @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:18PM
Go is cheaper to make than the 3000 (meaning every unit sold is that much more of a profit), and its inflated price seems to have driven potential buyers to the 3000 instead. in the end it's all money in Sony's pockets. it's an unconventional strategy, but i'm not sure i'd say it's a "f*ck-up".
johnnynumber5 @ Nov 23rd 2009 12:09AM
yup ... what artimus said
Doesn't mean they planned it that way from the jump but thats how it's worked out. Pushed people to the 3000.
CheeziePotato @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:15PM
PSPgo = more PSP sales?
WOW!
HeXeN {?????} @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:18PM
Damn you PSP for outselling your dad, big brother and little brother..
AerialAngel87 [PSN ID - AerialAngel] @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:20PM
PSP vs DSi
PSPgo Vs DS Lite
sounds about right..
AerialAngel87 [PSN ID - AerialAngel] @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:31PM
Hey its not that bad though !
-points to self- They have a customer right here...when the day comes they have sense and lower the damn price.
ChuckBartowski (ATDF Technical Consultant) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:32PM
wait... shouldn't that be the other way around?
AerialAngel87 [PSN ID - AerialAngel] @ Nov 23rd 2009 12:19AM
PSPgo has similar sales to DS lite.
PSP has..well..more sales then DSi
Mr Khan @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:27PM
Pro Evo has a profound effect yet. Not unexpected
But the Go is really tanking quick, while the older PSP continues to grow. I wonder if it's release is somehow having a positive effect on non-Go PSP sales?
BigFat @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:38PM
I would guess so. i think people are scared that the PSP 3000 modle will run out of stock or something so they are buying them now.
or at least thats my theory . . . .
PSN: Erdie (Now equipped with Wii!) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:30PM
With 8GB pro duo sticks commonly found under $25, a bigger screen and the ability to watch/play UMD games and movies on the 1/2/3000...I just don't see a big market for the Go. It's certainly the black sheep.
But at the same time, I'm really, really happy that my 2000 can access all the goodies the Go can. My Lite wasn't so fortunate, but dsiware doesn't exactly have me rushing out to upgrade to a DSi yet.
iofthestorm @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:48PM
Yeah, I own a DSi and right now there's nothing amazing out on DSiWare. Mario vs DK is fun and that's probably the best thing on the service. I just bought it now to get the 1000 free points. But I think more interesting titles are starting to make their way onto DSiWare, and the nice thing is everything is much cheaper than on WiiWare. Plus it's just handy not to have to dig around for cartridges, but then you can already do that on PSP I assume and on DS with *cough* illicit* *cough* methods.
I wish some company would force their publishers to do dual digital/physical releases. Sony had the opportunity with the PSP Go but I'm not sure WTF they're thinking right now with that. All digital will be nicer overall for the consumer (besides the resale/used market which is kind of a shame) but if they priced digital versions lower it would be a much better situation. I'm looking forward to the next generation of handhelds where hopefully everything can be downloaded or stored on the system so that we don't have to carry around carts or disks anymore.
Sly @ Nov 23rd 2009 12:21AM
well, the go can add memory too, so if you get one of those 16GB micro memory sticks, you can actually have 32GB. which the normal PSP can't.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:40PM
It's certainly good to see the Go flop everywhere, but the fact that anyone bought one is scary. Maybe NOW sony will see that extremely overpriced systems aren't what people want. Or knowing them they'll think the 3rd time is the charm and will magically make people buy overpriced technology.
Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:53PM
"It's certainly good to see the Go flop everywhere"
What the fuck are you talking about? Why is it good?
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 22nd 2009 10:57PM
Because extremely overpriced technology that gives no benefit over its older version(s) flopping is a very good thing.
I still believe this was a test for features that would be in psp2, and thankfully the people are showing sony they want no part of full DD and other useless features that make this $50+ more than it needs to be.
Reuben @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:01PM
I agree with tmac, actually. If the GO were selling out all over it would send a fairly strong mention that we're: a-ok with the price, just dandy with all-digital distribution, and over-the-moon for how they handle it.
I don't think any of us are alright with any of that.
Reuben @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:02PM
fairly strong message**
UGH
Marius Returns @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:05PM
looks at the ipod brand
....ok?
Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:05PM
You could say it's overpriced, as could I just as easily say video games in general are overpriced. I don't know who defines what is "overpriced" or not anyways considering a console is much more expensive and you can get the same amount of enjoyment out of PSP in my opinion.
I sold my PSP a long time ago and if I was to buy a new one, I would get a PSPgo. Because it's convenient (16gb default memory without buying an expensive stick), and it's small... I like small things.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:07PM
The ipod sells off an image to idiot hipsters, much like nintendo sells an image to idiot casuals.
Sony doesn't have the luxury of selling to a ton of idiots, which is why they can't get away with overpriced hardware like the other two can.
Hyams @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:10PM
I actually want a PSP Go...
(Although, I shan't be getting one until the price drops down to a reasonable level.)
Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:12PM
"idiot casuals"
Because they don't devote their lives on video games (and blogs) they are idiots? What's wrong with playing a game for fifteen minutes just to pass the time?
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:14PM
You're pulling that card on the wrong guy...
Reuben @ Nov 22nd 2009 11:46PM
You could argue that videogames are overpriced, and I would agree that they are indeed too expensive, but they all follow a trend. $60 for a game is the norm, and if someone were to sell their game for $70 I'd say, "hey, that's overpriced." $250 for the GO is outiside of the normal range of current pricing, and therefore the term overpriced can be applied more comfortably.
@tmac
I have an ipod because they work well for me, and I know that if I ever have a problem I can simply get to an Apple store. I'm not embarrassed about owning one, nor am I an "idiot hipster."
