Marvel vs. Capcom 2 defeated HD Remix in sales battle

"We have three titles that have drastically over-performed our expectations," Capcom's VP of strategic planning and business development Christian Svensson told GamesIndustry.biz. "The most recent of which was Marvel vs Capcom 2, which we didn't expect to exceed Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix's numbers, but it has."
One IP that hasn't quite exceeded Capcom's expectations in the west is Monster Hunter. The company is working to turn that around with events like Monster Hunter Tri University designed to familiarize press with the workings of the series. "We are strategically investing in the brand in the West," Svensson explained, "because we know that as a company we're going to continue to be creating Monster Hunter content, so it behooves us to do what it takes to make it stick here." In other words, Japanese sales ensure that Capcom is going to continue making the things, so Capcom might as well try to sell them outside of Japan as well.

Yeah I was wondering this too. My guess is Bionic Commando: Rearmed...

That's quite the...C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!
I haven't had the time to play MvC2, but I've had Street Fighter II since the SNES days.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) (XBL: reo6) (Waiting for NMH2) @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:18PM
It's easier to find a copy of SF2 than MvC2, limited copies really jack up the price.

I think the cheapest I've seen in a retail environment was 50, for a beat up copy of the Xbox version.
Kizzle @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:22PM
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 confirmed! Except it isn't.
AoE @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:23PM
You mean: Disney vs Capcom - New Age of Exploitation Dream Fight 2010 HD Ex
Xoonaka @ Nov 24th 2009 10:19AM
I'd play Disney vs Capcom. My party of Simba, Aladdin, Ariel would own.
Milton Crompton @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:23PM
I don't know if I should get this, I mean, I loved it and all, but as it is, I've gotten heaps of these good time oldies, especially on LIVE, only to have myself not play them, at all!
DangerMouse @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:54PM
I kind of regret purchasing MvC2. It was fun to play it for a few days, but grew boring quickly. I found SSF2T remix far more enjoyable, and the online play kept my interest much longer.
Maulok @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:34PM
I would love to know how CvM2 and HD Remix titles sold in comparison to SFIV. I don't have a hypothesis of the outcome, just curiosity.
GewurztraminerX @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:37PM
I got both and am just as, if not more, horrible at these games than the day they first came out.
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo on the other hand. . . that's a game I can win.
hotrider12 @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:47PM
STILL!!!!! waiting on capcom vs. marvel 3!!! hell when will it be made????
Shagittarius @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:40PM
The west doesn't like Monster Hunter cause its crap.
Foetoid @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:55PM
Give the main character a big scar and glue a chainsaw to his rifle. Will that make it better?
Anti-Villian @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:44PM
not homoerotic enough! needs less hunting monsters and more military bromance.
Katana Master @ Nov 24th 2009 2:56AM
I like it, screw you!
Trey @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:54PM
Capcom forgot to turn the friendly fire off on the hadoken.
Lurkero @ Nov 23rd 2009 6:59PM
By the time HD remix was released most people were already anticipating SF4 and MvC2
Cody @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:19PM
You can't be serious.
Or your tmac.
Longshot @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:28PM
I think the article is straight up wrong. I don't think it has anything to do with more work going into HDR, and everything to do with the fact that ST is a far, far, FAR more accessible game. ST is fighting at (nearly) its simplest. MvC2 is one of the most complex games ever made. That sort of intimidation usually factors very heavily against a fighting game.
Also, lots and lots more nostalgia for the Street Fighter Brand. Heck, SFIV has pretty much singlehandedly revived the genre for the masses.
longshot @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:29PM
How did I read the ENTIRE article backwards. I have no explanation for how MvC2 did better. :)
scratch @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:30PM
is SSF2HDTRM still buggy as hell? i didn't buy it cause i heard terrible things about its playability. i would like to have it, cause it is SF2 and the new sprites are purty. i couldnt care less about MvsC2 and thought SF4 was meh.
CheeziePotato (Gotta Catch Em All) @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:40PM
The only thing worse than tmac is expired milk.
BrokenTriforce @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:44PM
If my friends and I want to throw down in a 2D fighter (that isn't Smash Bros.) we play MvsC2. Why? 1 reason. ROSTER.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention DC rulz #1
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:29PM
Isn't the Dreamcast version the superior one?
BrokenTriforce @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:31PM
I'd say it is because it runs on the same engine as the arcade version.
acefondu @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:45PM
They are both great games but HDR > MvC2 for me. I just love HDR for having nearly all of the characters be viable to use whereas MvC2 only about 8 out of 52 are useful.
Foetoid @ Nov 23rd 2009 7:52PM
*dresses like an emo*
LEAVE TMAC ALONE!!!
emperorzeroxx @ Nov 23rd 2009 10:52PM
of course marvel vs. capcom 2 defeated hd remix........ it's only like the BEST fighting game ever created. Capcom should not be surprised by this considering for the past few years people were practically begging for either a re release or a sequel....
Slust @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:01PM
To be honest, Street Fighter is kind of a dead series. Sure some guys can be amazingly good at it, but it moves so slow and clumsy. And you can't block in the air. Fuck that shit.
Glad to see Marvel vs Capcom 2 march on. Hopefully it ignites the start of Marvel vs Capcom 3. And they do something about that whole Cable crutch.
Seriously, if he is a part of your tourney team, you're terrible. Get off the cheap teet and go get good at something more skillful!
Phame @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:34PM
Really? Slow and clumsy? I beg to differ. HD remix requires strict timing/inputs, you probably aren't playing at a high enough level. Most of the rebalancing is on point. MVC2 is faster, I'll give you that. MVC2's roster suffers from some serious issues. SF is far more balanced in that respect, besides Akuma. Don't get me wrong, MVC2 is fun every now and then, but as far as a fighter goes-that game is broken.
SF2>MVC2 any day. Hands down.
swimying100m @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:02PM
Just as I expected!
Rodrigo @ Nov 23rd 2009 8:14PM
Gameplay >>> Graphics!
Always!
But only this time this is not a good thing... May they cease to release HD Remakes =(

Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 24th 2009 1:57PM

tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 23rd 2009 9:35PM
Funny, I asked earlier today if it was Cody. I'm educated, so I don't talk like that.
Gary @ Nov 23rd 2009 9:55PM
I think most of why SSF2HDR didn't sell as well is because of the ridiculous title. To the casual consumer It doesn't sound like a legitimate entry in the Street Fighter series. If they had just called it "Super Street Fighter 2" I wager it would have bested MvC2.
Crusty Magic @ Nov 23rd 2009 9:58PM
Ugh, that makes me sad.
HD Remix is the better title by far.
Shattercross @ Nov 23rd 2009 11:19PM
I have both of these games and I can tell you that:
MvC2 won because it's MvC2... the most overrated fighting game ever released. The game is unbalanced as hell, the majority of the characters are recycled sprites, and the soundtrack, not to mention the presentation look as if they were from two different games. Everyone talks about this game as if it were the second coming of christ and the fact that the horrible ps2 port fetches as much as 400 dollars is a joke.
High level play of this game consists of using the cheapest most unbalanced characters in tandem and spamming infinites till your opponent ragequits and/or dies.
HD remix didn't do as well because of the simple fact that it somewhat requires skill.
Phame @ Nov 23rd 2009 11:56PM
amen.
