100ms over LAN and they bring this product to market? Are they insane? I get 15ms pings to New York from Philadelphia and their system adds 100ms to a computer 10 feet away?

I was just thinking how nice it would be to have something like this for this long weekend back home instead of lugging my PS3 around.

It seems for around the home use it's not that much difference in price to just buying a new 360

Haha, I was going to say exactly the same. Instead of screw $200 on this POS, why not get an arcade and simply carry your memory card or hard drive into whatever room you're gaming in? The only way such a device would be worthwhile was if it was lag free.

Not only that but you'd need a PC, console and this device on at the same time, which means more money down the drain for the extra electric.

You really should have tested this over the Internet, just so everyone can understand what an abject failure OnLive will be.

Sounds like this was a controlled demo by Spawn. Hopefully they send out the final preview units to outlets prior to a retail release.

This is different than OnLive though because you have to actually own the console itself. I have a Slingbox and it's wonderful for what it is but I couldn't imagine playing a game over it. OnLive is for people who don't want to buy an expensive gaming rig and they have (allegedly) developer their own server technology to get input lag to a respectable level. Whether they can do it is another issue entirely but the two technologies are not the same ... from my own understanding at least.

Johnny5 is correct, the technologies are completely different and the processing power will be a magnatude larger with Onlive servers rather than this tiny box.

raw processing power has absolutely nothing to do with latency. It doesn't matter whether your own system is doing the number crunching or some hosted server off somewhere in the cloud. Latency is a function of your connection speed and your physical distance from the server (either onlive or your own house).

Dave: Latency isn't really based on your connection speed and distance. It is impacted more by the quality of the link. I get about 16ms from Virginia to a Google IP in Washington (the state.) The number, quality and current load of the switches and routers between the two ends is what really matters.

But playing games from a remote location like this or with OnLive is going to suck. If you can only get 100ms latency that means it'll be at least 200ms from the time that you press a button til you see it on screen.

What's the point if it's gonna be some shitty lag-fest?

As a person who travels for work and spends half the year in hotels, this is exactly the type of product I need. It's the only way I'll have enough time to play through a game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2, I'm buying one!!

I'm in the same boat (I'm a flight attendant) and think it sounds pretty good. I could adjust to the lag in a single player game I think... problem is 90% or more of the hotels I stay in only offer wireless internet which they mentioned wont work with the device.

Timmet: The wired only portion is only where the console is, not where the PC is on the other end. But using wireless would probably increase your latency.

Justin said there is lag on a LAN, imagine over the net how bad that will be... Best way to emulate that is remote desktop in someones PC and see how fun it is doing anything that way. Its a cool idea, but if your so serious about gaming why not just get a PSP/DS or something ?

yep, remote in and try watching a youtube clip. That's about as compressed as this video is going to be, probably a decent comparison.

Also seeing as you need access to a PC to play this, why not get a decent laptop with discreet graphics ? A friend of mine got a HP Tablet for 500$ (Canadian ones at that) and it has a HD3200 in there that can handle Unreal 3 engine games pretty decently.

Id like to add that this was probably done on a 100mbit lan (hopefully not 1Gbit) and on average a very fast connection is typically just under 10mbits. A average connection will only upload at 1mbit however... Neat idea but in the real world I dont think it will work as well as we wish.

While an intriguing idea, I foresee death for the company. There's little reason that this feature couldn't be built directly into a console, and it may even be possible to achieve through software on the 360 or PS3 (and certainly into the design of the next round of consoles). If it proves to be successful by any measure, I would expect Sony and MS to look to incorporate this, thus cutting out the middleman.

It's too bad they don't recommend overseas gaming. It would be so awesome to be able to leave my PS3 at home in the US and play it remotely from my dorm room here in the UK. Still the delay on action titles would suck for a game like AC2 or Uncharted, or B:AA. So I guess the better option for me would be to spend $200 on a TV.

They forgot to mention that surround sound isn't an option for this thing either. If you have, for example, your 360 hooked up with Toslink or HDMI, every time you leave the house, you'll have to disconnect the HDMI or Toslink and re-connect the craptacular stereo sound. That's a deal-breaker as far as I'm concerned, as is the absence of chat and fact that you have to leave a 360 controller physically plugged in with the charge and play cable in order to access your console. (No controller must be plugged in with PS3, I understand.)

This product, while a nice idea, has numerous, and I while I'd like the ability to play console remotely, I won't consider such a product until it can offer lag-free gameplay and surround sound. It's too bad... on first blush, I was elated. Upon closer inspection, it's clear this thing is not worth the money to me. (People without surround sound setups might be more interested than I am, though.)

Why dont they work out a service where you'd subscribe to play games on some console/pc in a data center somewhere remotely? Sure there's the latency thing and the copyright thing but those can be worked on.

Answer to your question: Cause that'd be worse, many times worse.
For starters, it'd be a shared system. What if someone else is on it when you want to be on? You have no access to your saves.

So you spend $200 for a box to take with you on the road so you don't have to unhook your XBOX 360?

I have a better idea. Spend $200 on a fresh 360 arcade, bring your hard drive with you, and use that same web connection elsewhere to play the real thing.

As I understand it, you don't take the box with you. You plug the box into your console AT HOME, and then you can use the console from any computer that you install the software on.

Basically, slingbox for games.

I haven't found a way to get good video game footage, and I've had a couple of video capture devices in the past. Getting the footage from a DVR hasn't worked too well, either. The Spawn would probably be a good solution, unless something cheaper and more effective is available.

I don't own it, but I've heard good things about it's ability to capture HD content. Of course, it's a few bucks more than the Spawn and requires a decent pc to run it.

Because they would need permission from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to do it, and that's not going to happen in 100 billion years.
