Two Swiss humanitarian organizations recently examined 20 shooting-centric video games to determine whether they allowed players to break the wartime guidelines laid out by the Geneva Convention -- rules which prohibit torture, destroying "protected objects" (such as churches or mosques), or, say, shooting a bunch of people who are waiting to catch a plane. The games observed, which include 24: The Game, Call of Duty 4 and 5 (we assume they meant Modern Warfare 2) and Metal Gear Solid, were largely panned for allowing the player to simply ignore the Geneva Convention's statutes.
According to a BBC report on the study, the two groups explained that while players of these titles may never become soldiers, these war crime violations could "influence what people believe war is like and how soldiers conduct themselves in the real world."
In short, you should feel bad about your recent airport murder spree in Modern Warfare 2. Not for the moral implications of killing dozens and dozens of innocent people, mind you -- but because it was against the rules.

I actually thought that whole level was boring as fake blood drying. In my second play through, I skipped it just to speed the damn thing. Being forced to slowly plod along all ominous-like probably sounded great in the planning meeting, but in reality, is just plain aggravating.

Seriously now... ITS A GAME.... PCness once again rears its head. Seems to me that Hollywood continues to get its free pass on the subject of violence as always.

I don't actually see the issue. If a child has misinformation on war crimes from video games I don't see the negative effect. I mean, sure, they should become educated, but I fail to see any real harm.

REAL LIFE already allows people to violate the Geneva Convention - torture, illegal detention, failure to recognize POW status... and that's just violations by the USA, there are countries that do far worse.
Maybe games are just a reflection of real life - maybe we're not whitewashing things and pretending to live in a gumdrop fairyland where people are nice and war apparently has rules that people follow.

You raise good points. If we're going to use this logic that video games affect how kids view reality then wouldn't it actually be more dangerous to NOT allow these actions? It would make these kids think that they could go out to war and shoot at mosks and churches without haven't to worry about damaging them at all.

Yeah, it's a game. It's not like they were looking to ban the games. They just did a study.
And if "it's a game!" is an automatic pass in making things okay, why not put in child-rape games, or sim style game for concentration camps? Oh, wait, I know. We should make a game about flying planes into skyscrapers.
It's called some things are taboo and in poor taste. Even if it's "just a game".

I can actually understand this, if kids playing CoD come to think that its OK for an AC130 gunner to blow the shit out of everything because that's what war is like, there could be some problems there...

Luckily for us, they can't get into the military to actually use an AC130 with that attitude.

I find it ironic that it's always the Swiss that make these whole war crimes studies when they're one of the biggest arms exporters in the world...

Check your facts. Switzerland is #17 in the world for arms exports with $211m in sales in 2007. The US had over 7.5 billion in sales while the top 8 all cleared a billion. Switzerland isn't even close to being a top worldwide arms exporter. They're also currently in the middle of a vote to ban all arms exports.
You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Here's my source.

@ Arcadia
Switzerland is still in the top 20 of arms exporters, so my statement that it's ONE of the biggest arms exporters is still accurate, never mind their development of weapons like the Carl Gustav SMG and recoil-less rifle, AT4, Bofors 40 mil, and that new automated artillery system they just invented.
My point is it's just ironic that they're home to the Geneva Conventions when they manufacture and sell some of the world's most predominant and effective weapons of war.

They're fucking games.
Nobody in their right mind is going to think that games portray how real things happen. If they do, they need slapping.
I'm sick of hearing these types of stories, funny how you don't see them saying a similar thing about movies (Jarhead?).
/sigh.

Why don't they worry about the whole HUMANITARIAN thing and help real people. Swiss...*shakes head* BAD SWISS< NAUGHTY!!

The Geneva Convention "Rules of War" only benefit one side: The side that doesn't use them.
When we meet our greatest adversary, these rules will be our undoing.
