Kevin Shortt, master wordsmith at Ubisoft Montreal, has allegedly confirmed to Official PlayStation Magazine UK (via CVG) that Far Cry 3 is in development at the Canadian super-studio. Most of you know that we had no problem heaping copious amounts of praise upon Far Cry 2, one of our Top 10 games of 2008, so a third installment is most certainly welcome in these parts. Sadly, Shortt didn't say whether Ubisoft has decided to go with Africa again for the setting, but offered that what he's seen of the game looks "pretty exciting."
So ... that's pretty exciting, right?

You mean it was shit. Really good idea on paper, but heavily flawed execution. Maybe lucky number three? (two for Ubisoft?)

the only downfall of that game is that the baddies have no armor or shirts and then take a full clip to kill. And the computer always knows where you are.. But what-the-fuck-ever!! That game was awesome! So much fun! Beautiful scenery! Hang-gliding! Total emmersion. Plus killer (literally) fire effects! So good!!

I thought it did some great things, the AI was really good. Well, for my style of play anyway (stealth all the way baby!) Sometimes there would be a point where they'd magically see me through bushes, but 99% of the time it didn't happen.
What bugged me was those rediculous fucking checkpoints that kept being filled with guys. One of the greatest parts of FC2 was just bumming around through the roads, exploring the fucking beutiful world they created. To have that interrupted every thirty seconds by a bunch of jerks who attack you in the exact same way (jump in cars and chase you for no reason) was sort of a bummer after the six-millionth time.
Oh, and someone really should have come up with a storyline for the game because I wasn't aware there was one.
But for all it's flaws, when FC2 worked... it was an amazing experience. That said, I never did finish the game. I might buy it for PC once I've got some new gear in there and see if there's mods that fix those problems.

I tried soooo hard to like it, so hard. But there were just so many flaws that it was impossible to overlook. Driving everywhere through lifeless jungles and savannahs populated by infinitely respawning guard posts with shirtless thugs blessed with adamantium skin. I could really see how awesome it was underneath all these flaws, but for the life of me i could just not enjoy it. I still have my copy, and I always try and play it once in awhile but i never last long. Maybe over the holidays ill try again, but it's doubtful ill go far

Far Cry 2 is utter shit. I'm sorry that you most likely never played the first game. The sequel has NOTHING to do with the 1st game and has a good but extremely flawed execution.
Some of you console gamers have low standards, I'm sorry, I have to say it. I said SOME, not ALL so chill out on the lynch mob.

Far Cry 2 got so much right and so much wrong at the same time.
Great:
- Total immersion: Riding around in the cars was fun as hell, being able to look around and such. The teammate helping you when you die was also totally awesome, I was expecting to just teleport back at a checkpoint but got something rad as heck instead. It also fits with the immersion where you don't really die, but still get set back a bit.
- Graphics were fantastic
- Fire effects (goes with above point but holy shit)
- Weapon degradation, though a bit too fast, was a great idea
- Healing by pulling bullets out. Loved it in MGS3 and still loved it in FC2.
Bad:
- Pretty much everything else.

My sentiments exactly, The Dark Wayne. I, too, wanted to love the game, but Far Cry 2 attempted to emulate real life too much and that's where I think it falls flat on its face.

I'm with you, Jerk Face.
I've been yawning my way through Modern Warfare 2 with my friend, but I've sunk about 100 or more hours into Far Cry 2 across a couple characters and I love the level creation tools.
It's just different tastes in games, it doesn't make them bad. Chill out, kiddos.

Why were you guys down voted? It was broken shit. Great ideas that got fucked in the programming stage I guess.
Where to begin? First weapon damage on enemies are a joke, everyone hates you period and check cross points are spawned with assholes in an unrealistic fashion.
I could go on and on but who would listen? Apparently not Ubisoft who dumped this turd on our laps and laughed all the way to the hype train paying off pretty much all game reviewers or something for it to have been so heavily praised. Reminds me of the over hyped Halo 3, errr Halo 2.5, and ODST, errr ODST: the Expansion pack .

I agree. The gameplay just fell flat. Enemies take crazy amounts of bullets, every checkpoint you take out, enemies respond.
A lot of it was also artificially lengthening the game. Everytime I drove around there would always be an ambush that I had to take out for the 100th time, and the random guys on jeeps always trying to kill got annoying. You also had to get out of your car to fix it, if you drove over a pebble.
I got it for free with my video card, played it for a week, and was wondering what the big deal about the game was. The opening sequence was awesome, and I was expecting the best, until I actually started playing the game.

I had a hard time sticking with FC2. I don't know if it was all of the traveling you have to do or the crazy enemy AI. Multiplayer was badass for sure though! I'll be interested to see what improvements FC3 brings.

It was a combination of traveling and uninteresting areas that killed it for me. The travelling took forever (the bus stops were so far apart that they were pointless) and the amount of enemies was ridiculous. Why does EVERYONE want to kill you? You cant have an open world game where everything is an enemy. Look at every sandbox game out there, GTA, Oblivion, Fallout, STALKER, Mafia, etc, they all have neutrals/allies/enemies not just 100% enemies. And once you got spotted it was pretty much impossible to ignore them since they always managed to catch up with you no matter what.
They sucked all the fun out of it by punishing you left and right. Punished for shooting because your gun would break, punished for fleeing because your car would break, punished for exploring because youd run out of malaria pills.

I love FarCry 2. The single-player had some small issues, such as no friendly people, everyone was out to get you, the malaria pills came sometimes a bit in a bad time. Some more wildlife would've been welcome. Other then that, the game was amazing.
I still play it once in a while with some friends in Multiplayer, it really shines when you work as a team and come on, it has a freakin' map editor!!

The matchmaking system was terrible (well, the PS3 version anyway). I would sit there for 5 minutes waiting for people to join, waiting for each one to confirm they're ready, only to be kicked out with no explanation given. I kind of figured it was a console thing, until i recently got Battlefield:BC where getting into a quick game is nearly instantaneous. But the map making is pretty damn impressive, even though it's not really my thing.

The graphics and the open ended crysis like gameplay lured me in, but the overall mess of a story and insane mechanics killed it after about a week. I never did figure out what the point of me being there was, and who this jackle person was, although I was reminded about 50 times with the same loading screens.. I know Africa is hostile, but damn. Every mile was an encampment full of people trying to kill you for no reason other than you are white, and if you lay waste to em, they just come right back.

I loved the jewels and weapon system, but overall the objectives were such a chore. I had no sense of sides, they both told me to do the exact same thing. Drive a long ass way while getting tailed or shot at, get there and kill or destroy a truck or person, rinse and repeat. For a FPS, they sure made killing people unappealing.

Loved the series, can't wait. Maybe instead of a sweltering hot area, it could take place somewhere cold, like Alaska.

The new Avatar (James Cameron) game uses the Far Cry 2 engine and looks INSANE in stereoscopic 3D. I tried Far Cry 2 w/ the nVidia 3D Vision glasses as well and it's also impressive (not quite as surreal though - which makes S3D much more interesting)

1 was on an island.
2 was in Africa (a big island).
Guesses as to where 3 will take place? Or rather, where you'd like it to take place? My wish is for the Korean DMZ, set 50 years in the future: it's still dangerous as hell everywhere, except now there are towns for some reason.

Since Crytek sadly isn't working on the Far Cry series anymore, it isn't Far Cry, plain and fucking simple. Ubisoft has already ruined the franchise, DON'T CALL IT FAR CRY!
The other Far Cry games on the console don't count either, the only real game is the one on the PC.

Far Cry 2 got everything right but the gameplay. They need to get rid of the repetition (that is apparent in all of Ubi's games this gen) and respawning enemy system.
I loved the setting though, and the game looked pretty.

people hate on FarCry 2 a lot, but i LOVED it. i could spend ten minutes crouched on a rock overlooking an enemy encampment, watching soldiers movements, before i made my move. i took out an ammo depot under cover of darkness without anyone ever knowing i was there. seriously, it was one of my favorite games. i almost cried when Josip died. i didn't know that other enemy was there, man... I'm sorry... they all burned for what they did to you, Josip. Is to kick ass, cowboy. Is to kick ass. BRING ON FC3!!!

Wow! I can't wait! You are an undercover FBI agent about to work undercover for a Mexican drug cartel. On your way there you contract explosive diarrhea that forces you to take your meds every 10 minutes (or whenever you stray to far out into the expansive world). They could implement advanced immersion features that let you do things like put gas in cars (that run out after traveling 10 miles) and thumbing for rides to your next objective that is 150 miles away. Of course that trip would be non stop action because everyone (gas station attendants, school children, etc.) will shoot at you on sight.
