Analyst: Modern Warfare 2 DLC could make $140 million in 2010
Now that Modern Warfare 2 has smashed launch records -- raking in serious cash in the process -- the way is paved for inevitable downloadable content. DLC will likely rake in serious cash of its own, according to Broadpoint AmTech analyst Ben Schachter, who tells IndustryGamers that DLC could bring in an additional $100-140 million in revenue next year. The figure is based on the DLC attach rate for the previous Call of Duty title, World at War, which sold 0.625 downloadable map packs per copy, according to Schachter. At $10 each, that means every copy of World at War generated an additional $6.25 after the initial retail purchase.
Assuming there are 14-16 million copies of Modern Warfare 2 in players homes by the time DLC launches, Schachter says the content could generate up to $140 million, minus the portion Activision has to pay to platform holders that host the DLC. Schachter also believes DLC will go beyond map packs, theorizing that Infinity Ward could offer in-game items, new game modes and new missions (more co-op sniping, please). Of course, expanded DLC content could result in higher prices this time around.
Only time will tell how well Modern Warfare 2 does post launch but, regardless of what kind of content is on offer, we imagine it will probably do okay.

All they need to do is go down the Bungie route and make the "optional" maps a requirement for playing in the majority of online gametypes.
That'll make them sell even faster.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 25th 2009 9:42PM
The same Bungie who tried to force Microsoft to make the maps free? The same ones who released a free map for Bungie Day?
Their reasoning was sound: Why should we screw the guys who bought the maps?
wormania @ Nov 25th 2009 10:01PM
People who buy maps can still play them. It's just that people who didn't buy them can still play the game.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 25th 2009 10:07PM
Bungie just loosened up the restrictions on most of the playlists, actually. But if one person didn't have it in matchmaking, no one got to play it.
Though Heroic is still required, but that's free.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 25th 2009 10:56PM
Darth have any proof that Bungie tried to force Microsoft to make those maps free? It was quite the bitch move to force people to buy the maps just to play certain playlists.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 26th 2009 12:27AM
Bungie has explained this several times. The reason the Legendary Map Pack hasn't gone free is because Cold Storage was free, and MS threw a shit fit about even that.
Epic tried to make their DLC free as well. Microsoft won't allow it.
Brodo @ Nov 26th 2009 12:33AM
This is how it will play out:
"This is so stupid, $10 for a few maps, what a rip off!"
*Goes and spends $10 on maps anyways
The end
pdott @ Nov 26th 2009 3:26AM
One of the best games I have played with my friends.. Now Ironically, while Modern Warfare 2 is reaping millions towards 2k10.. they are still banning people (along with XBOX officers) who used Pirated copy of XBOX live related softwares.
Something tells me these guys want money: http://bit.ly/one-million-players-banned-on-playing-modern-warfare-2
I guess that's life you can't get all for FREE :D lol
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 26th 2009 1:38PM
I find it funny that if Bungie does it is alright, but if IW does it you get upset.
COD4 did it right, you buy the maps or not you could play most of the playlists.
Darkfocus @ Nov 25th 2009 9:34PM
DLC? like the DLC thats already on the disc?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYWvAFOwDUU&feature=player_embedded#at=11
Then a White Kid Said @ Nov 25th 2009 9:40PM
I wonder how many dev's do it anyway, put the core files for dlc onto the disc. I personally think it makes sense, i mean the DLC is planned while the game is in development so why not put it on the disc?
All you'd have to do is dl those files anyway.
Then a White Kid Said @ Nov 25th 2009 9:42PM
If the files wernt on the disc it would cost 60 bucks
if the files were on the disc it would cost 60 bucks
throw in the 5 dollars for the DLC and youve got 65, it doesnt matter if it was already on the disc or not
Darkfocus @ Nov 25th 2009 10:10PM
the point is they purposely held back content from us just to make more money when it could have been included with the game for the same price. It's not like the can use the excuse "we needed to hold back content for DLC in order to make a profit" not to mention they should be rewarding their customers not gouging them.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 25th 2009 10:55PM
Have you ever considered that they just didn't put those game modes because they didn't work in play-testing?
Tiptup300 @ Nov 25th 2009 11:21PM
The point of DLC is to release new content that the developer didn't get a chance to put into the full release. Why the FUCK would we have to pay for it if it's on the disc?
Sly @ Nov 25th 2009 11:50PM
that's only a game type. that doesn't prove anything. they've already added like 3 new game types for free, so i doubt they would add more for a fee. they only charge for map DLC, not game type DLC. when i read your comment, i thought they had locked maps on the disc...
Darkfocus @ Nov 26th 2009 4:11PM
theirs actually three game types and one new map
dana @ Nov 26th 2009 9:08PM
yeah!
Sly @ Nov 28th 2009 2:36PM
is the map finished at all? or is it in a really rough state? i hadn't heard of the locked map before...
Sandmonkey @ Nov 25th 2009 9:39PM
$140 Million Dollars?
*scoffs* I wouldn't be surprised with 200.
As much as people LOVED this game, I thought it was an average shooter that came up a little over its head. I'm not saying it was bad, It wasn't too much of a chore to play it, I'm just saying if I were able to take back my moneyz, I would.
DON'T FLAME ME
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 25th 2009 10:13PM
Why would I flame you? MW2 was the biggest disappointment of the year for me.
Sandmonkey @ Nov 25th 2009 10:17PM
@Darth, the Awsom
If they had just packaged the MP, and sold it for 30 dollars, it wouldn't be.
Game of the Year 09?
Viva Pinata, though it did come out in 07.
Sheriwell.Siferra @ Nov 25th 2009 10:28PM
I think the game was to much a copy of Treyarch's version of Call Of Duty, instead of being their own man, they decided to belittle themselves into Treyarch's shoes. Most likely from the behest of Activision.
COD:MW was far more tactical, where sense had to be used before you enter a room, now stun grenades disable claymores, scrambler disables claymores. The reason for this is so someone can come running and continue running without consequence. Along with machine pistols or dual shotguns that devastate at close range despite having a jump on someone you can easily be taken down by a dual shotgun. Heartbeat sensors that show you exactly where someone is.
It's removed every tactical bone it had and changed into something else. It's honestly become crap.
CaramelZappa @ Nov 25th 2009 10:52PM
From what I've seen it looks like they didn't really change much from the first one. They tweaked things like having more than one helicopter out and added deathstreaks, but for the most part you play it exactly the same. No that that's horrible, the first one was great, so it doesn't need many changes. It just surprises me when people get all excited "OH MY GOD ANOTHER COD" Quickly throw their $60 down and know they're going to be spending $20 more on DLC. Meanwhile, L4D2 launches and while it's a HUGE improvement over the last in every way, people complain about how they have to pay for a whole new game and how it should have been an update.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 25th 2009 10:58PM
It is a disappointment... if you are a Halo fanboy who doesn't like the fact people are switching over.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 26th 2009 12:25AM
Halo 3's servers are still nice and busy...

...WTF? Treyarch is the one who copied off IW with WaW. The cinematic experience was completely ripped-off. They copied off COD 2 with COD 3 as well. Used the same engine as IW for both games. Wrote a new script and re-used things from IW's games for both. MW2 in no way ripped-off WaW. IW made their own game. THEY are the creators of Call of Duty, not Treyarch. They can do whatever they want. It's their series. Every other Call of Duty is almost for sure just gonna imitation. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of their team didn't even play WaW. I'm open to Treyarch's Call of Duty games to be good. I'll definitely try out the next one unbiased.

I'm open to Treyarch's Call of Duty games to be good. I'll definitely try out the next one wanting it to be amazing like IW's games... But I will probably be disappointed. Because it will just completely copy off IW in every way Treyarch can. They will rip-off the amazing multiplayer which IW created, they will rip-off the single-player, they will use IW's MW2 engine, and they will make lots and lots of money off of it. Thats one reason why I didn't buy WaW. It was just a cheap rip-off. Without the dismemberment it wouldn't be fun to play at all. Bleh. I'm probably gonna get downvoted by you people...
lenandude @ Nov 26th 2009 12:49AM
Shoot. It didn't post the rest of my comment. Oh well. I'm not re-typing that.
lenandude @ Nov 26th 2009 12:50AM
Okay, so it did post my final comment. Disregard my first comment and read the second one if you want to read it.
phinnvr6 @ Nov 26th 2009 2:27PM
And the games not even that good. A very short single player campaign
involving a ridiculous plot, $60 pricing, no dedicated servers,
arbitrary online player limits, no custom maps. All that plus the
fact that one player always has a zero ping advantage while everyone
else has 100ms+, making it overall probably one of the worst
multiplayer experiences I've seen in years besides the reasonably fun
gameplay.
The Bad Company 2 Beta on PS3 blows it away so far.
Confucius @ Nov 28th 2009 2:19AM
I don't think that MW2 would be as big or as epic if it weren't for WaW.
WaW took the series in a slightly new direction, it had the most blood and gore out of any CoD before it, the action was intense and main characters died left and right. Without WaW the single player would have been more tactile and slower pace like CoD4, rather than hectic and over the top, because WaW was more hectic than CoD4; in the single player at least.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 25th 2009 9:40PM
Schachter=Pachter.

I think he changed his name because people kept prefixing 'pacther' with fudge.
Scott @ Nov 25th 2009 9:55PM
I had my fill of modern warfare for the time being with CoD4. I enjoyed it, but it didn't exactly leave me screaming for more. I'd rather play some (fake) watercolor-painted war, with a new Valkyria Chronicles game.
I'm not saying that fake, cartoony war is better...just that I'd played less of it. Plus: the chick with the silver hair and boobs.
Sandmonkey @ Nov 25th 2009 10:14PM
I got you some pick up lines for her, I know who you are talking about, she is a real bullet in the sandbag. Use these:
"The word of the day is legs, wanna come over my house and spread the word?"
"Is your father a policeman because I would like to have sexual intercourse with you."
or lastly, if your low on pickup lines,
"My socks are having a party, do your pants want to drop by?"
Scott @ Nov 25th 2009 10:20PM
I said Valkyria Chronicles. That sounds like MGS4 dialog.
Sandmonkey @ Nov 25th 2009 10:25PM
Oh, my bad, you can still use this era friendly one.
"Hello."

unlockable Pandaren perk: where the little guy skateboards around the map with a keg on his back and wailing Metallica on his guitar, stunning enemy players within a certain radius.
chris @ Nov 25th 2009 10:09PM
Any one else not really feeling this game? I'm over it already.
freaparn @ Nov 25th 2009 10:18PM
I was over it after the first play-through and a couple hours of MP. CoD4:MW was one of those great games that have you coming back for more months later, but MW2 was pretty much forgettable in comparison. I guess it's a matter of IW setting the bar pretty high with the first game, and then failing to achieve those same heights the second time around.
For the people who love it, hey, more power to you. But it's too much of a step back in the franchise for my tastes.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 25th 2009 10:57PM
Nah, it is still great. I think there are a million people enjoying it right now.
