Square Enix has released yet another Japanese language trailer for Final Fantasy XIII, likely the last one before the game hits retail stores across the Pacific. This five minute video features a lot of recycled footage from earlier trailers, but attentive fans will notice the reveal of new characters (villains, perhaps?).
The highlights of this lengthy preview are the franchise's trademark over-the-top summons -- made even more spectacular and grandiose for this generation's first numbered entry in the Final Fantasy series. Of course, Square Enix fans would have it no other way.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm not excited for this game at all anymore. The trailers makes the plot look like some soap opera with all the over the top melodrama. That and the characters just don't do anything for me.
I wouldn't go so far as to say SMT > FF or vice versa because let's face it, there is some shit and some diamonds in both piles. Comparing whether the amount of diamonds and shit in pile A overwhelms pile B isn't something I want to get into.
Am I the only one who's barely ever interested in the main Final Fantasy series? WHich is weird, since I am a fan of Anime and JRPG's, and it's just that there hasn't been ONE FF title that's ever clicked with me. Sure, XIII looks cool and all, but I'll likely lose interest quickly as soon as it comes out.
Well I'm sure you're not the only one. Everyone has different taste, even when it comes to having genres and styles in common. I haven't been interested in FF since IX and I'm pretty interested in this one.
Ok, that's cool, your opinion (Even if I don't understand it) but personally I have never played an RPG that has surpassed any FF game... With the exception of X-2, I try to forget that ever happened (Yuna with guns? Really?)
Also, if I'm sounding stupid or my comments are unorganized it's because it's 2 in the morning...
persona is indeed good. but i wouldn't go as far as to say smt>ff. i would just say that at the moment, persona>ff. probably until ff versus 13 comes out.
and i agree. i haven't been happy with square since ffviii...

Well, it's nice to see that the Pope made it into the game... But he should probably clean up his nails if he's gonna be ordering people around like that...
I hope it's better than FFXII. It just let me down. I mean, FFX? You fight your Dad INSIDE a monstrous time traveling flying whale, which is ALSO your Dad. Then Seymour is all CAN'T LET YOU DO THAT STARFOX, and summons his tortured Mom's twisted SOUL in battle. Hell yeah!
FFXII was... well, there was some royalty, and it got ye olden, and there was shocking betrayal and such. It was pretty unremarkable. Yeah, Judge what's-his-face was kinda cool. I remember Ashe, and Vaan, and Fran the hot bunny-chick. That's about it. I think they really tried to change too much, and it didn't work out for me. I was also pretty disappointed in the fact that characters can use any weapon. It made the already forgettable characters even less memorable, because you no longer have set mages, rangers, swordsman, etc. They're pretty much all identical. And it removes the AWESOME limit breaks. Omnislash? Lionheart? Blitz Ace? No, instead we get Quickening. Which uses all your MP, crippling your magic options. Smart.
...What am I saying, you can just use Decoy and Reverse to win anything.
At least Episode 1 had a bad-ass fight scene with a clearly evil villain. (None of that wishy-washy "misunderstood villains with a tragic past" business.)
I actually liked Phantom Menace more than Attack of the Clones. Basically what I'm saying about XII is that the world was more interesting than the characters.
I understand your gripes with XII but IMO it really is an underappreciated gem. The story was actually "mature" and not just a bunch of whiney teenagers.
Fair point, I thought Ivalice was a great setting. I just couldn't bring myself to care about what happened in it. I mean, SIDE characters in FFVIII got more attention than Vaan did. Selphie and Tribia Garden? That shit was tragic, don't even lie. Yuffie was an UNLOCKABLE character, and she's got a freakin CONTINENT dedicated to her backstory.
Hey, Final Fantasy XIII is already an improvement. Only one character looks like a kid and one character acts like one. At least this time the lead protagonist seems to be a badass.
Um, in FFX if you complete the sphere grid every character is pretty much the same, so you can't argue that about FFXII. Yuna can finish the end boss with one tap of her staff. It's really quite stupid.
I will agree that FFXII character's weren't the best to bond with, with the exception of Balthier, Fran and Gabranth. The others were kinda meh. I do believe they should have realeased the International Version with specific liesence boards but it'll never happen.
I did however enjoy the gameplay a lot and I found the quickenings fun and really impressive since it was ingame scenes on the PS2.
I couldn't enjoy X, it was too linear, the voice acting was annoying for most of the characters, I couldn't feel for Tidus who just whined about his Dad all the time. The "twist" wasn't really that cool to me, it was just all Tidus Tidus Tidus and his daddy oh poor him, when Yuna was the one willing to sacrifice herself. I just think it was silly making it all about Tidus. And Yuna killing her summons at the end? What? Then they brought out the stupid sequel and I could never play X again.
My favourite is still FFIX. Followed by FFVII and FFIV.
All I have to say is this game deserves a ABSOLUTE import buy. I got my copy pre order at play asia for $79. after a coupon and believe is worth every penny. Sure my Japanese is elementary level but Ill give it every effort to learn more and read every FAQ out there. Im blue every time a "Japanese" theme game gets translated horribly for the "western" market. VO and Songs should have stayed in Japanese with subtitles. But oh well. Ill enjoy it 4 months before the US release. FF XIII is going to be EPIC!!!
But about the trailer. The action scenes look phenomenal, and I'm impressed by how fluid the new battle system looks, and I'll buy this game on those merits alone. The plot... well, I'm not as hopeful. It looks like a soap. And not a good one. It's gonna get all.... weepy. I just know it. And honestly, a chocobo lives in his afro. A part of me died right there.
I'm going into this one somewhat apprehensively. The fights look great and I'm glad to see the return of a permutation of ATB, but that story looks like dreck.
Well, a dramatic story is what made Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and X so good. I don´t see anything wrong with it....people love drama. As for Persona, as a huge fan of P3, and Final Fantasy, all I can say is that you really can´t compare, for the only similarity the franchises have is that they´re in the same genre. Plus, Persona is wayyyy more linear than Final Fantasy. It´s all about what you like really, and I prefer more personalization and character development in my games. As for the graphics, Atlus will NEVER top Square.
