Patent details Xbox 360 hint system
Microsoft must like Nintendo's new Super Guide system, because a patent has recently popped up online detailing a similar system for the Xbox 360. The core difference between Microsoft's proposed system and Nintendo's comes from community input; the patent not only touches on a way for users to submit screens and brief guides for those especially tough spots in games, but also says users will be able to include brief audio commentary and add to their screens using a digital pen feature. The system also details functionality for devs and publishers, giving their insights and guides more weight than those from the community.
It's ambitious, to say the least, and even though we foresee millions of potential Halo 3 teabagging tutorials, we're all for anything that helps us game better.

Any post, regardless of content, is an instant win when it uses something from Starship Troopers in any way, shape, or form.
Andrew @ Nov 25th 2009 8:42PM
couldn't agree more, one of my cult favorites
CzAr @ Nov 25th 2009 9:13PM
No... any image with Neil Patrick Harris wins.
Stevetrop @ Nov 25th 2009 10:01PM
I agree on both points. Having both Neil Patrick Harris and Startship troopers in a post is a Win/Win situation

And I'm sure, in typical Microsoft fashion, it'll be for Gold Subscribers only.
Which means it'll be yet another "service" they offer, that you have to pay for, that you can do for free on your PC.
*confetti*

You don't have to pay for anything, get a job.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Nov 25th 2009 8:30PM
Considering the amount of crap people post on YouTube, a free service, I'll be happy if it's limited to just gold accounts. That way, we've effectively cut the amount of crap by at least 50%. There will still be crap, but just less.
That Guy @ Nov 25th 2009 8:55PM
Judging by the people playing on Xbox Live, I think you'd probably get less crap if it was Silver Subscribers Only.
finnith @ Nov 25th 2009 10:06PM
I'd look forward to the multiplayer guides if were Silver Suscribers only.
Or they could have, you know, a ratings system. Or Maybe preferred users.

Why Neil Patrick Harris?

Anyone who is dumb enough to need a tutorial on tea bagging probably isn't the type of person that should be allowed to know how to do it.
Wait a minute. Why would anyone want anymore people to know how to teabag players?

That's funny, because you weren't saying that whenever Nintendo's Super Guide was first revealed...

BIacked Out @ Nov 26th 2009 8:51AM
@Alpha: wow you went the extra mile bro. One thing though, how is the stuff in the virtual mall more useful? You guys have several different avatar shops, we have one. Your avatars can only be used in their respective app or game, whilst Xbox avatars have several (growing every day) applications that they can be used in - hence the reason i've actually purchased some avatar goods, cos I see that little munchkin everywhere.
Who cares about avatars at the end of the day, just thought i'ld put my two cents in.
Alphathon @ Nov 26th 2009 7:23PM
@BIacked Out: I dunno really, just the whole virtual space makes them feel like they have more worth. I have yet to play a game which uses avatars other than uno, but I was under the impression that a lot of items (mainly hats, masks and props) were disabled in said games. Personally I think both are worthless. The only prop I have given my 360 avatar is the floating ball robot thing from halo (I can't remember it's name) which was free for running the (also free) halo waypoint app. In home I have bought nothing either. I just somehow thing home stuff is slightly less worthless :P.
P.S. I assume Joystiqs comment system is to blame for posting there :(
NOT ME @ Nov 26th 2009 12:54AM
Im sorry Im having a fanboy moment here...between my ps3 xbox this is why i love my xbox, its not perfect (sorry only had rrod once 3 yrs ago) but why ps3 is still figuring out how to get cross game chat and so on. xbox has added netflix, soon this, facebook(could really care less about this one) You know stuff that people actually use on a regular basis. Dont get me wrong after beating uncharted and both gows this weekend i love my ps3 and always will, but MS just seems to try harder to make its customers happy. say what you want but its seems to me that things get addressed and added a lot faster than they do on PS3. And spare me my xbox uses ethernet and i have 35 blu ray.....how often am i REALLY watching them...so all the omg 100 for a wifi and "it has blu ray" points are null and void to someone like me. ps updates always seem to never really add anything...so again what is sony working....and wtf happened to home. I go there and i cant believe people hype this up so much....oh and if you spend money in the "virtual mall" I never want to hear you bitch about playing for live again
OnionPowder @ Nov 26th 2009 1:36AM
I don't have a PS3 and even I know that the PS3 has Netflix and Facebook.
Mikeymike @ Nov 26th 2009 3:44AM
I'm sorry, but I could only look at your display picture and how epic it is.
Alphathon @ Nov 26th 2009 5:28AM
Dude, you weren't exaggerating about the fanboy moment were you?
"xbox has added netflix, soon this, facebook" PS3 has both Facebook and Netflix, not that Netflix matters to ANYONE outside of the US.
"could really care less about this one" I think you'll find that's COULDN'T care less. If you could care less that meens that you do care some.
"MS just seems to try harder to make its customers happy." Not really. They seem to by trying harder to compensate for their closed system and shortcomings (generally speaking). The PS3 doesn't need the 360s Twitter or Last.fm apps - it has a browser, which has been there for years (I don't know if it was a launch feature or not, but I think it was)
"say what you want but its seems to me that things get addressed and added a lot faster than they do on PS3." Any Examples?
"And spare me my xbox uses ethernet and i have 35 blu ray.....how often am i REALLY watching them...so all the omg 100 for a wifi and "it has blu ray" points are null and void to someone like me." So you don't really watch Blu-rays (or movies in general) that often. That doesn't make it worse than the 360, just less valuable for YOU. Besides, they both cost around the same now anyway, so if you had the choice of a console with Blu-ray and one without for the same price, which is the better deal?
"ps updates always seem to never really add anything" Fair enough. They do add a lot of crap no-one cares about (although it does generally improve things a little bit for everyone) but they do have updates FAR more often than the 360 and the 360 ones are often (not always) just as featureless (but then, you do get the odd gem in the PS3 ones as well)
"oh and if you spend money in the "virtual mall" I never want to hear you bitch about playing for live again" I have to agree, but at least the stuff in there is slighty more useful that the stuff in the avatar marketplace
If you really need to vent like this, start a blog.

For someone pointing out how this is something unique to xbox, it sounds an awful lot like the tips and online functionality of Demon's Souls.
Face it, MS saw a good thing and like the patent trolls they are (to be fair, all companies exploit the overworked and undereducated patent office), expanded it a bit to make it all encompassing so that they officially now have a 14 year lock on Demon's Souls 2. It's not creative, shouldn't be supportive, and frankly if From Software didn't patent a system like this because they felt it SHOULDN'T be patentable, Microsoft sure as fuck shouldn't be patenting prior art.
Shiaoran @ Nov 26th 2009 11:56AM
I don't even remember the guy, I've recognised the bug legs and I've only watched ST1 and only once when it was on the cinemas.
That's how awesome my memory is :)
Gel @ Nov 29th 2009 4:26AM
Uhhh...
why not just include the developer cheats that we used to use on the PS2, Xbox, and that we still use all the time on the PC in the form of command line consoles and Trainers?
With those, anyone can get past tough sections of most games and complete them. If there is a puzzle then you can just read how to solve it on the web if you get stuck.
I...don't understand why the features outlined in this patent are necessary at all.
UNLESS Microsoft intends to force you to pay extra for it in some way.
