I also like to think that this guy wears a pinstripe suit with a paper mask strapped on of Darth. He never really was on our side.

It's funny you say that because I was just thinking to myself that I wouldn't mind it if you got banned from the 'Stiq.

I hope Brink does bring that to me, I dabble in FPS MP sometimes but I just prefer the epic feel of single player as opposed to the constant respawn reminder and tards shooting at team mates, it takes away from the experience for me. Which sucks because I love shooters but aside from the obvious Valve games that make me enjoy MP (TF2, L4D) most other shooters make it feel like only way to get my moneys worth is by joining in on the douche baggery of online play.

So, hopefully, just maybe Brink will end up delivering.

Oh, great, thanks.

Except I live in the middle of the nowhere, in a neighborhood filled with old people and my ISP is crap.
Should I get another 3 controllers and force people to play with me?

Yeah this guy strikes me as not knowing what the hell he's talking about, given that multiplayer is what most people play on FPS. I'm actually in favor of making multiplayer an unlockable only after beating the single player.

It's definitely not good for gaming when everyone gets too caught up in multiplayer all the time, as we're seeing games that shouldn't have it starting to get it thrown in. Dumbs the game and the industry as a whole down.

@Tmac

Whats actually funny is that logic also works in reverse. Modern Warfare 2 has a tacked on campaign instead of a tacked on multiplayer. There are other prominent examples as well but I'd say the best games are the ones that get both aspects (single & multi) right from the start like Uncharted 2 or Gears Of War 2. They have solid campaigns, competitice multiplayer and co-op modes.

I think it’s funny (confusing) how people will shriek if a game is seen as repetitive, when multiplayer games are *all* *about* repetition. I don’t know how I got in the minority on this one, but when I see, for example, the Call of Duty: MW2 videos, and all it is is re-spawning at the same point every 3 seconds, then being fragged (oops, I’ve dated myself), then repeat ad nauseam… How is that compelling from the perspective of story? Is it not just a mindless twitch-fest? Someone educate me — what am I missing?

I know I can’t be the only one out here, but I can’t stand (the current state of) multiplayer. I play the single-player game until it ends, and then the story’s over.

It’s about story. Well, for some.

I agree. Though I do enjoy some aspects of multiplayer. I've been playing Multiplayer FPS games since the early 90's and it has lost its charm. Coming from a design standpoint, it really is difficult now to market your game acordingly. The designers want to express themselves and stay true to their art, but at the same time, you are making a product for the masses, and you have to feed the masses what they want.

I was initially rather disgusted by the idea of a game suggesting I play online instead of my current play choice. At this stage I see it more of an attempt to generate interest in a title that may not be of substantial interest to consumers.

@scampercom

Why do you think tetris is so popular? Yeah, repetition. Humans love repetition, it's a fact. There's even a study to back this up, I'll try to find it.

Because as a misanthrope, I hate people and the internet isn't exactly where humanity's best shines.

The ability to silence humanity by hitting the all mute button (when it exists...Uncharted 2 is a more notable, recent example) is a beautiful thing.

You can actually meet people who are competent, and NICE to boot, on co-op. it's rare, but they do exist.

I think that multiplayer has gotten dull over the years. It's really the same thing over and over. It's either deathmatch, capture the flag, protect the areas, or some variant on those. It hasn't been good since Quake II.

Good luck on getting support for split screen games.

The argument now is that the current consoles can't support it without a massive drop in resolution with the graphics.

I suspect it has more to do with selling more copies (by forcing online MP) to re-coup development costs than just image resolution.

Splash Damage developed Enemy Territory and I believe Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Two of my absolutely favourite multiplayer shooters back in the day. I have faith that if anyone can make people love multiplayer shooters it is them.

Downvote me all you want...but when I play video games...I want to play on MY OWN TERMS. Not at the whim of the random asshatery that the usual multiplayer component provides.

So if you enjoy playing with others...good for you.

When I actually want human co-op gaming...I go outside and play a sport.

Why do people consider Call of Dookie: Modern Warfare 2 to be the definitive online shooter? It has a stupid perk system, such as dropping a grenade after being shot in the head, you don't start off with an ACOG, you get blown 10ft away from a mere grenade, and you can turn while in scope as fast as any large telescope. SOCOM has always beaten Call of Dookie, and hell, it sold the network adapter for Sony.

I definitely can't wait for this to come out. I'll also be picking up Rogue Warrior when it drops.

Doom on Call of Dookie fans.

I don't need convincing to go play multiplayer in most games...I just often don't. The atmosphere, when you are playing with random folks, can be annoying. Now against a good friend, real world or online? That is very different.

"It's our goal from the outset to incidentally teach people to be good at multiplayer shooters while they're playing our single-player shooter,"

So, it tells them to make lag switches, use glitches, and quite their job and play 16 hours a day in their mom's basement; while at the same time going through different racist, homophobic, and anti-semetic phrases?

I know this article is several days old now, and unlikely that many people will see it or care... but I just have to say that Paul is the real deal.
I've met him several times in real life (but I think saying that I 'know' him is probably a stretch) and he's a great guy and knows what's fun. He played competitively with a clan back in the quake 1 days (as did I) and has been with gaming for a long time. His company made Wolf:ET, which is possibly one of the greatest multiplayer experiences of all time.
I saw them show off Brink at Quakecon... if you love the formula of the Enemy Territory games used (in a nutshell, Objective-based gameplay), than I see no reason why you won't love the hell out of this game.

It will be awesome.

What a silly thing to say. He should be trying to convince people that single player experiences exist in FPS, not the other way around.

I know 4 or 5 different people that are level 40 in MW2 but haven't even started the campaign.
