Nintendo gives thanks for plenty of holiday week hardware sales

Nintendo announced that over 1.5 million of its various game systems were sold last week. Not last month, last week. Thanks to Black Friday and two new DSi bundles, Nintendo could afford all the trimmings for a resplendent company Thanksgiving. Not that we know whether or not Nintendo had one of those. The point is, Nintendo sold a bunch of stuff and made a lot of money.

According to Nintendo's estimates, more than 550,000 Wii systems were sold last week, and over 1 million DS and DSi systems. The release of two new DSi bundles (along with a few crazy prices) could have had something to do with that last statistic. By selling that many handhelds, Nintendo broke its own sales record for the holiday weekend! Though the company didn't manage to beat last year's 800,000 Wiis sold, which means that, despite still selling a huge number of Wiis, and despite all those DS sales, Nintendo is completely doomed, right?

i'd get a DS lite but i can't live with those mushy buttons

The Lite definitely has a few issues. Buttons are one of them (nearly impossible to play GBA titles on them) and that power switch sucks.

Just me who didn't have any problem with DS Lite buttons (disclaimer: never played a GBA game on it) or the power switch? I mean, yeah you have to slide it, doesn't seem all that much of a challenge...

I'm tempted to get a DSi but so far the games haven't really made it a priority.

How bout thanking us by offering the Black Wii?! :P

Because even though your comment was in reference to Nintendo's ability (or lack thereof) to release a Wii video game console that is of the color black in the North American continent, it could be misconstrued to mean an African American, as black can refer to the darker color of skin than that of a Caucasian's "white" skin, and 'Wii' is phonically identical to the English slang 'wee' which can be interpreted as 'penis.' And "That's what she said" can be construed as a woman wanting to have sex with the innuendo that was unintentionally provided prior, as the norm of society is that of heterosexual relationships between a male and female, which in turn leads to sexual intercourse.

I'm kinda ashamed to say I stood in line at wal mart at 5 am to get a DS. I guess because it was $30 off, but I still feel stupid.

Shouldn't be ashamed for a great deal like that.

If it had been the DSi, I would have been in that line myself.

I wouldn't have got a DSi no matter how much it was reduced by, simply because there's no reason to get one over a Lite. By the way, I love the Lite's design way more than the last DS I had (fat).

I like the DSi for the bigger screens. And some of the downloadable titles.

But for now, my Lite works. If the XL boosted the resolution, I'd get that one to reduce the hand cramps playing CoD4 on it.

too bad the XL didn't. that makes the much bigger screens kinda pointless since games are gonna get a good bit uglier.

DSi is better than DS Lite. DS Lite's buttons suck horribly. SRSLY.
DSiWare has some cool stuff on it like the ArtStyle games and Mighty Flip Champs. Or if you feel creative, there's Flipnote Studio and Art Academy.
The DSi Browser is actually usable, unlike the original DS browser or the PSP browser... but if you have something like an iPod touch, it's not nearly as good as that mobile browser.

No GBA slot? No problem. The DSi flashcart iPlayer can run a GBA emulator that's just as good as the real thing (only the iPlayer, apparently, due to it having more RAM than other flashcarts).

Was this really targeted for the older demographic?

Unless they start taking more consideration to the hardcore and start making the Wii into a respectable franchise-driven platform, then yes. They are doomed.

It is odd that Wii demand is down from last year. This year's holiday entry is much more worthwhile, though i suppose they were still running hot on the dual beasts of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii last Thanksgiving

Goes back to that whole 'hardcore will spend because they have to, the casual won't because it's just a extra on the side' argument.

I think it says a lot that even though they dropped the price $50 this holiday season, sales are down from last year. While the sales are obviously still very strong, the platform is losing steam, quickly.

If someone told me in the Gamecube era Nintendo would come back and be killing it like this, I would have laughed at them. Boy was I wrong.

You weren't the only one. Ninty was practically on life support during the Gamecube era. No matter what they tried, there was no beating the PS2 last gen.

But that's nothing compared to Sony's utter cluster *foxtrot* this gen.

Nintendo made money every quarter except one last generation. I'd love to be on their life support.

But they weren't a significant presence in the market. Even Shiggy said the GC era saddened him.

Which is really odd because most of my favorite games are on the gamecube.

PS3 had more appealing bundles. Which would you choose, a 360 with Pure and Lego Batman, or a PS3 with Batman, inFAMOUS, and The Dark Knight?

nope, its doing well, I mean last year it sold 130,000 on black friday... and the U.S is the ps3s weakest market, looks like it may be changing

Also, amazing DS and Wii sales, its obvious people love nintendo this gen more than ever.

Wii is down by alot though, despite its price cut, and its biggest game in 2 years.
