Employing Steam's built-in VAC anti-cheating system, Infinity Ward has dropped the ban hammer on its first round of Modern Warfare 2 cheaters – 2,500 PC gamers, more specifically. In responding to a question on Twitter last Friday, community man Robert Bowling said, "The Steam ban hammer is coming down on about 2,500 confirmed #MW2 cheaters on PC today."
We contacted Bowling to find out how frequently the bans will be taking place and have yet to hear back. We'll keep you updated when we have more info, but for now we're going to get back into these hacked private servers to do some superhuman jumping and grenade spamming. You know how much we love our grenade spamming.

I wonder if these are people who actually purchased the game?

I heard from one person that cheated on an online game in Steam that Valve banned his entire account, all his games were gone, worth over $200. As much as I dislike online cheaters, that is a bit much don't you think?

It is sort of excessive. Locking the one game would make more sense as opposed to shutting down a whole library.

No, it's the best way to get rid of them for good. Bet he won't cheat again will he (if he's smart)

They don't usually do that. In fact the only cases I have heard of where this happened was where someone was playing a pirated steam game with steam open (duh) and apparently got caught. I guess the idea is if your stealing steam games they have no way of telling which ones are stolen and which ones you paid for so you just lose everything. I don't know if that is true or not though. Although I have seen crazy stuff that lets you download any game you want through steam without paying.

I agree that the guy is an asshole for cheating, but it still really isn't fair to elimenate a full library of games. It's not like he stole them, hacked someone's account, or cause some huge malfunction that ruined the game enough to warrent a banning that large.
Of course I don't think the story is as simple as "this one dude only cheated once ever and it was really small and they took ALL HIS GAMEZ!" They probably had a good reason.

I think it should be a warning system. You cheat once, you're alerted and your game is disabled for 24-48 hours. Cheat again and your library is shut down.
Anyone who deliberately cheats after being warned deserves it in my book. Anything less is overkill.

Hopefully it wasn't Erik Estavillo. Otherwise Newell better head for Mexico.

I'm surprised there are only 2,500 cheaters, I thought there would be more.

So what did the cheat actually do?

I can understand WoW with the ban hammers but its a FPS online shooter what is the big deal? PC users have been getting the shaft with this game now Activision pulls this shit on there original fan base. Sad day indeed. I am not condoning cheating but all I am saying is that in the lobby area as long as you know what type of gameplay is going to happen in the match how is it bad? If everyone in the match has unlimited rockets and high jump how is it cheating then?

No, he has a point, as long as everyoe in the round has access to the same set of abilities, there's no handicap. The question is, is that the case in most game?

You seem to be referring to dedicated servers. On IWNet, it's cheating.

Again if everyone on the map can "cheat" (as in the video that was shown) then how is it bad? I have played in TF2 maps or even Left4Dead servers where crazy shit happens but its available to everyone so there is no unbalance player.
My whole argument is that if this "cheat" can only happen on that map then is the the players fault of the fault of the server host? Peoples opinion about this topic is very one sided since all they can speak from is from their experience on playing just on the console online where if you play on the PC end its a whole new world. That is why these exploits aren't all that surprising.

Ok, I was initially going to give you worst post of the year, but I see your point now (I'm trying at least). If it is a dedicated server and everyone on the map can do the "cheats" then yeah, the playing field is fair, but if your are playing a regular match and you find a way to climb up on the stage and walk on the clouds, that should be an automatic ban unless you didn't do it on purpose and don't take advantage of said situation numerous times. On a match were you are clearly not supposed or where intented to climb all the way to the top of a level, even if anyone can use this, it is not a common or intended way to play said game and its obvious that glitches happen, but its the act of recreating a glitch to get a tactical advantage over others that is considered for banning here.

So, from what I understand;
-These dedicated servers have mega super +xp, which doesn't just hold for the dedicated servers, like on MW, but counts towards your rank on iwnet.
- The 2500 people banned were on illegitimate accounts. None of these people were banned solely for playing these "dedicated" servers, while gaining obvious unfair advantage over the rest of us.
- Does this mean the end to iwnet and their non-dedicated server pig faces?
- Next up is working on free DLC for pc again. (MW was free)

The actual cheating problem is significant and has nothing to do with low gravity mods or the like: auto-aim and x-ray cheats are the real problem.

Too bad most of them just torrented the game.
Posted: Nov 30th 2009 4:55PM Special Agent Steve said
Torrenters= people who can just re-download the game and start up a new account. And torrenters have no risk involved when they DON'T PAY for the game. So, therefore, they usually ARE both cheaters and torrenters.
I don't see how in any way that was confusing.

I'm sure there is still cheaters, just not as obvious as the jump grenaders.... I mean seriously no matter how good your aim is you can not kill a person 20 times getting a head shot every single time.

Cheating on PC is one of the main reasons I switched to console gaiming where cheating is not prevaletn. Yes you have more precise aiming with a keyboard/mouse combo and I do miss the good old days of competing on the PC with my clan buddie but I don't miss the days of dealing with cheaters with wallhacks and aimbots or having to go through server pics taken by punkbuster. And don't get me started on config files....
I've moved on and I am now happy gaming on the console. For all adults out there its best to find an adult community like zerocommit.com, adultgamingenthusiasts.com, or 2old2play.com and participate in any of their gaming nights or leagues. Any of these websites will lead you to great adult community where you won't have to deal with cheaters or inmature gamers.

If I wanted to float around like some juvenile smacktard, I'll pop my Half-Life multiplayer disc back in. I'd have the added bonus of Simpsons' and South Park SFX. with the lameness.
