This issue isn't too bad simply because the game is free; something that happens across a few free games hosted on the internet.

When there was paying for weapons planned for Battlefield: Bad Company, it was stupid because you already had to pay ~$60 for the game and you still didn't have access to all weapons that were on the disc.

Have to agree.

One of the reasons I never played Battlefield Heroes was because I instantly knew something like this would happen. It makes sense that it would happen. Developers have to make their money back one way or another this being "another."

Buying "virtual" items is a complete waste of money in my opinion. The only instance where it makes any sense is for games that you can play for free. However, like with Battlefield Bad Company, this trend is going to start playing into games that you have to pay full price for. Naturally, this is all because of digital distribution which some of you are in fervent support of. I hope you look forward to paying $$$ so you can use all the items that you'll have to download (that you'll never actually own) with the game you download (that you'll also never actually own). Do you really think the publishers want digital distribution to be the future b/c it supposedly makes life more "convenient" for you? It's always about money and property control. Games like this are just the first step towards convincing gamers that buying ingame items (that don't exist) is ok.

Well, I guess like many free-to-play games, if it's completely free you just don't make money any more. Most games have to break the balance a very little bit to stay profitable. Basically, to them, if they loose 50% of non-paying users and gain 15% of new paying users, they win and make more money while they have less costs. Then everything's fine.

And this is why "free to play" is not free. If they can't nickel-and-dime enough people, they will "alter the deal... and pray we don't alter it any further". The only solution is to boycott microtransaction-based games universally.

I bet they did the purchase time thing for this reason:

So everyone gets pissed off about the update and talks about how unfair it is, then to be reasonable someone says, I wouldn't mind if they just removed that time limit for VP purchases, a large group agree with this and so EA swoop in and say We are very sorry about the update and as an apology we will remove the time limit on VP purchases. This would still leave the price changes intact which are probably what they wanted all along?

Kinda conspiracy-ish but that's what I think is going on.

So basically the same thing that happened with gas prices, only for virtual goods instead.

Oh look, today gas is $1.18 per gallon. A month later and now gas is $2.67 per gallon, that's terrible! Oh hey, a week later and now gas is only $2.12 per gallon, I'd better fill up the tank! I'm so glad they lowered the price!

Ok, I'm cool with everyone boycotting retail games for stuff like this. But c'mon, this is free-to-play. How else did they really think this was going to play out? This is the gift/curse of 'free' games.

sacrificing game balance is not the way to make money on a "FREE" game.

So you want to be the punching bag to play for "FREE"?

Great! Now, every foul-mouthed 12-year-old will now have every item in the arsenal, and dress like an id10T, because MomAndOrDad don't keep a leash on their accounts. I'll be bazooka'd by a spawn-camping pirate spouting profanities all day. Thanks EA!

Having played the game for just 3 days, I have to say this move doesn't seem that big of a deal. I had enough Valor Points in a couple sessions to buy pretty much every gun or accessory I needed.

Considering the game is free I don't think it's insane to change the game so that paying is a reasonable OPTION (as in before it was so easy to get everything for free there was no point).

The article title makes it sound like these items are exclusive to paying members. That would be an outrage.

If you actually play this game often, earning VP is not hard at all. Most people just don't earn VP because they don't understand you get hundreds of points for *actually* completing map objectives.

map objectives?
you only get VP for either losing a match (4VP) or winning a match (7vp)

there are missions where you get a bonus VP (like 10-20) but you cannot repeat them, once they are done they are done - and most people get the missions all done in no time

there is no way you can afford any of this stuff unless you pay money or play 18hours a day

People better start getting accustomed to micro-transactions because that WILL be the future of gaming. Why do people pay real cash for virtual items? I have no clue but people do and it's making these companies huge profits with huge profit margins.

we earn either 4 or 7 VP per match (about 15mins)

a new model shotgun (for close distance) costs 450VP for a day
the older less powerfull shotgun costs 150VP for a day
long range MG (for long distance) 150VP for a day
tankbuster (antivehicle) 150 per day

wigets for healing costs 120VP for 10
widgets for reparing vehicles (there is no other way to repair) 120VP for 10
(i would use about widgets 20 a match usually)

i used to load up on this before every game but now with the new pricing structure i cant even afford any one of these items a day

do the math it would take about 12-18 hours of playing a day to even be competitive with battlefunds users

and on that note the new UBER weapons are about $5 each and the old ones about 4$

widgets are about 7$ for a thousand (i use about 20 a match remember)

so about 15-20$ on each character (i have five) and a constant 5$ a week for widgets is what ill need to be spending and that doesnt even incluse clothes (yeah clothes are actually a cool part of this game)

urgh what a rant but EA really really went nuts here
too greedy

A lot of you are missing the point about why everyone is so angry. It isn't just the price increase for non-paying players. The game was designed and promoted with a simple but effective premise that made it different from other online micro transaction games.
That was- there is no way for players to 'buy an advantage' in game. All money purchases were for clothing and accessories to enhance the look of your character. You could not buy a better weapon or better abilities, etc.
Now that has changed and you CAN buy better weapons and widgets that give a player a very distinct advantage. Not only did they allow that, but the pricing structure for those using 'in game money' or VP points has skyrocketed so high, it is nearly impossible to afford anything at all. This amounts to 'Punishment' of those who choose not to pay. That core value change is why everyone is so angry.

Even those who were paying were annoyed. There are now now, better weapons to buy. They directly replace a load of re skinned ones you could buy that were purely cosmetic. Also the sudden price drop of things they just bought went down like piss flavour gum-drops.
