Never ran into either. I try NOT to piss off witches, and to that end, I try not to play with bots.

Can't get thru the sugar mill without a bot doing it. But then again my friends do it to.

As long as I've got a shotty, I seek out the witches. Four or five blasts takes her down before she stands up.

I decided to never play with bots again after sneaking past a witch in the cattle shed(Dark Carnival) when Coach decided to just shoot the bitch AND SHE ATTACKED ME.

In my experience, bots ALWAYS set off the witches.
Also, I've been trying to convince my roommate to stop trying to run up and crown every witch we come across. He kinda is ....uh.. still improving his FPS skills and dies every time.

Yeah, I got this yesterday.
It's a good game...but there are a few niggling AI issues.
And the NPC's are bastards. I was incapacitated by a Tank as the chopper came in, and the jerks walked right by (I had killed the Tank already), went up the steps, and got in the chopper...never even stopped!

i always found the bots to be both completely incompetent and greatly overpowered. If i were ever to get smoked or hunted it seemed they would never understand to knock me down when close or shoot when far. When we were just walking around, particularly Zoey in 1 with a hunting rifle, basically just had aimhacks and would oneshot everything. They are even more brutal killstealers now than in the 1st

I did Dark Carnival with the bots the other day to get the gnome chompski achievement and got smoked during the finale. They all came to rescue me but stopped and just watched me get choked to death. Every time I got pounced or smoked while playing with them, they did NOTHING.
I miss the bots from L4D1. At least they were useful for something...

So I'm not the only one screwed by the NPC's on the Dark Carnival finale?
Maybe it's the level?

It's kind of sad how useless they are. It's amazing that at the end of a round you see they took the least damage and got the most headshots, but you know they didn't help you one bit. That's why if I can't play with real people, I tend not to play L4D at all. It's just not worth it.

It's cool; valve fixed it. Just download the patch and re-burn those heretics.

Rarely are patch posts made for other games... are we going to get an update on every update for this game until the difficulty finally satisfies Joystiq staff?

Right, right. But really - other than WoW patches and the occasional significant console game patch, there really aren't many patch posts at all. This seems somewhat insignificant. Hell, if they're going to highlight anything in the headline, I'd say the game NOT STARTING on particular machines is a bigger deal than the occasional witch glitch.
I can't argue, though... I don't consider myself a member of the "slow news day?" camp and I'm down to read anything posted.
Witch glitch... witch glitch... witch glitch...

I don't get why people hate on joystiq for talking about the difficulty.
It is kinda their blog. Anyway for anyone telling them to stop whining have you guys tried playing Dark Carnival on the highest difficulty? Not sure if that's what joystiq plays on but holy hell is that just about impossible.

Joystiqs complaint is about the NORMAL difficulty. The writers would probably spontaneously combust and implode if they notched it up a level.

Joystiq's review complained about the easy difficulty...
"Playing on Normal difficulty, we were unable to beat a single campaign before opting to readjust the difficulty to Easy. On Easy, we still took quite a licking, in two cases deciding to just quit."

In the original, I've finished every campaign on expert. In this one, I've finished 2 campaigns.... on advanced. I have to work my way up again because you have to completely change the way you played from the first one to this one. It's tougher, but I can already see my team improving every time.
I finished Dark Carnival on advanced and it was so intense. After making it to the safe room, I literally put the controller down and let out a huge sigh as I slouched back on the couch, haha. That's what it's all about...

Weblogs, Inc. would very much like their bloggers to not disaffect readers with continual irksome behavior, e.g. incessant whining about L4D2's "difficulty," because fewer readers means fewer pairs of eyes looking at ads.

They have no sense of tactics so they never pick them up. If you pick one up and then drop out of a game the bot will use the grenade poorly. Basically, Valve admits the bots are useless so they designed them not to steal your stuff. This is also why they don't pick up medkits if you have a defib or special ammo.

It's kind of annoying because if they DID pick them up you know you would have players complaining about how the AI took all the medkits when you wanted to use one and pick up another one. It's hard to make an AI system that doesn't take too much or too little, since what that is can vary from each playthrough. The obvious solution is to play with real people, but sometimes they can be just as dumb as the AI.

I've always wondered about the grenade things. I've never seen a bot use a pipe bomb or molotov cocktail (and in the case of L4D2, Boomer bile). I guess because they'd be too USEFUL if they did...
And they rarely use the melee weapons in L4D2, which is funny because that's one of the selling points about the sequel.
And it is hard to get them help you when you're trapped by a Special Infected...
... Man, the AI is bad.

The main thing I have an issue with is when they take my Katana and proceed to never use melee attacks, ever.

The AI will pick up both medkits and pills. The problem is that the AI will never pick up multiple medkits or pills - even if there are left-overs. I'll give you an example to help explain it better.
If you go make it into a safe-room and one of the bots is at 40 health - but doesn't have a medkit - they will pick up 1 of the 4 kits in the room and heal themselves with it. Now, Valve didn't want players complaining that the AI were taking all the medkits so the AI is programmed to not take more than one medkit (or pill/adren shot) from each location. Even if everyone else already has a medkit and is fully healed, each AI character is limited to a single medkit at a time.
It's not a perfect system but it's much better than the alternative. If the AI wasn't programmed this way, you probably wouldn't ever be able to grab a medkit from the safe-room's since the AI would just use them all up to heal ~20 life and then grab a second before you even got a chance to get one.

How hard would it have been to put a button in there to control whether the AI can pick stuff up? I mean, just make it a toggle button where when turned off, the AI doesn't pick any medkits/pills/grenades up, and when turned on they do. That way you could just leave it off, pick everything you want up, and then turn it on for the AI to pick up the leftovers rather than just leaving them behind.
I love this game, but that's the one thing that bugs me about it. They left out so many options that they could have given the player that would have been so easy to implement and would have improved things by quite a bit.

Easy solution: Add an option to trade with/take items from bots. Ever taken a gun from a marine in Halo? Yup... just like that.

And of course, program a hoard-everything mentality in response to that

Sure, that would fix the problem with them picking sutf up, but the AI is still incompetent. I think they seem less useful than they did in the first game. Reason being that in L4D2 you REALLY need to work as a team, and since you have no way to communicate with your AI, that's impossible. It would be nice if Valve would add some squad commands for the single player campaigns, that way people won't get nearly as frustrated.
